Research note: Expert opinions of feather sucking and licking behavior in meat chicken breeder birds.

Feather sucking, or feather licking, has been reported anecdotally by employees in the Australian meat chicken breeder industry, but scarcely in the scientific literature. Consequently, the causes and implications of this behavior in meat chicken breeding chickens is relatively unknown. We surveyed 17 industry experts to generate hypotheses about feather sucking behavior. We aimed to understand the frequency and when it occurs, and attempted to understand what may cause an "outbreak". The recruitment of participants was intentionally biased towards Australian perspectives; only 5 of the 17 par

Spatial distribution, movement, body damage, and feather condition of laying hens in a multi-tier system.

The welfare and health of laying hens in the multitier system raise concern in public. The flock distributions during feeding time at 51 and 89 wk were studied in a multitier system. Furthermore, the ultra-high frequency radio frequency identification (UHF RFID) equipment was used to identify the transition between tiers and time spent in each tier of 48 focal hens (12 hens from each tier-group of the multitier system) at 92 wk of age. The body weight, tibia size (length and width), body damage (comb and rear part), and feather condition (neck, breast, back, tail, cloaca, and wings) of focal h

EFFECTS OF MYCOPLASMA GALLISEPTICUM INFECTION ON PREENING BEHAVIORS AND FEATHER QUALITY IN HOUSE FINCHES (HAEMORHOUS MEXICANUS).

Infections can have far-reaching sublethal effects on wildlife, including reduced maintenance of external structures. For many wildlife taxa, daily maintenance of external structures (termed preening in birds) is critical to fitness, but few studies have examined how infections alter such maintenance. Mycoplasma gallisepticum is a common pathogen in free-living House Finches (Haemorhous mexicanus), where it causes mycoplasmal conjunctivitis. Despite documented behavioral changes associated with M. gallisepticum infections in finches, no studies have examined how preening behavior may change wi

The effect of bile salt diet supplementation on genes related to fat metabolism in yellow-feathered broilers.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: As a new feed additive, bile acid (BA) can promote the absorption and transport of lipids and fat-soluble vitamins. In recent years, BAs have been widely used in animal feed to promote fat absorption. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effect of bile salt supplementation in the diet of yellow-feathered broilers on messenger RNA (mRNA) expression of sterol regulatory element-binding protein 1 (SREBF1), fatty acid synthase (FAS), acetyl-coenzyme A carboxylase (ACC), and fatty acid transport protein 4 (FATP4). Gut Microbial Composition and Predicted Functions Are Not Associated with Feather Pecking and Antagonistic Behavior in Laying Hens.

BACKGROUND: Feather pecking is a well-known problem in layer flocks that causes animal welfare restrictions and contributes to economic losses. Birds' gut microbiota has been linked to feather pecking. This study aims to characterize the microbial communities of two laying hen lines divergently selected for high (HFP) and low (LFP) feather pecking and investigates if the microbiota is associated with feather pecking or agonistic behavior. METHODS: Besides phenotyping for the behavioral traits, microbial communities from the digesta and mucosa of the ileum and caeca were investigated using tar

How chemotherapy and radiotherapy damage the tissue: Comparative biology lessons from feather and hair models.

Chemotherapy and radiotherapy are common modalities for cancer treatment. While targeting rapidly growing cancer cells, they also damage normal tissues and cause adverse effects. From the initial insult such as DNA double-strand break, production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and a general stress response, there are complex regulatory mechanisms that control the actual tissue damage process. Besides apoptosis, a range of outcomes for the damaged cells are possible including cell cycle arrest, senescence, mitotic catastrophe, and inflammatory responses and fibrosis at the tissue level. Distribution of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in feather and muscle of the birds of prey from Beijing, China.

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in the feather and muscle of common kestrels (Falco tinnunculus), eagle owls (Bubo bubo) and little owls (Athene noctua) collected from Beijing, China were investigated. The concentrations of ∑23PBDEs in the muscle and feather of all the birds of prey ranged from 46 to 7.77 × 104 ng/g lipid weight (lw; median 241 ng/g lw) and 1.50-191 ng/g dry weight (dw; median 21.1 ng/g dw), respectively. Higher brominated congeners, e.g., BDE-209, -153, -207 and -196 were the dominant congeners in both feather and muscle. However, the concentrations of lower brominated

Effects of stocking density on growth performance, feather growth, intestinal development, and serum parameters of geese.

This experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of stocking density on the growth performance, feather growth, intestinal development, and serum parameters of geese. In total, 336 healthy, 28-day-old, male Yangzhou goslings were randomly allotted to 30 plastic wire-floor pens according to 5 stocking densities (2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 birds/m2). The results showed that with the stocking density increased from 2 birds/m2 to 6 birds/m2, the body weights of geese at 42 d (P < 0.001) and 70 d (P < 0.001) were reduced by 10.53% and 10.43% respectively, the primary feather lengths of geese at 42 d (P

Feather bedding and childhood asthma associated with house dust mite sensitisation: a randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Observational studies report inverse associations between the use of feather upper bedding (pillow and/or quilt) and asthma symptoms but there is no randomised controlled trial (RCT) evidence assessing the role of feather upper bedding as a secondary prevention measure. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether, among children not using feather upper bedding, a new feather pillow and feather quilt reduces asthma severity among house dust mite (HDM) sensitised children with asthma over a 1-year period compared with standard dust mite avoidance advice, and giving children a new mite-occlusi

Combined moxidectin and environmental therapy do not eliminate Chorioptes bovis infestation in heavily feathered horses.

Chorioptes bovis infestation is a common cause of pastern dermatitis in the horse, with a predilection in draft horses and other horses with thick hair 'feathers' on the distal limbs. The treatment of this superficial mite is challenging; treatment failure and relapse are common. Furthermore, C. bovis infestation may affect the progression of chronic pastern dermatitis (also known as chronic proliferative pastern dermatitis, chronic progressive lymphoedema and dermatitis verrucosa) in draft horses, manifesting with oedema, lichenification and excessive skin folds that can progress to verrucifo

Vertical transmission of feather lice between adult blackbirds Turdus merula and their nestlings: a lousy perspective.

There is limited information about the natural history of the transmission of feather lice (Phthiraptera) from parent birds to their young. This article therefore examines the transmission of 4 species of feather lice from parent blackbirds to their nestlings in an English population, and addresses questions formulated from the perspective of the lice. The lice that disperse onto the several young in the nest were mostly found on the larger chicks, those with higher survival prospects. The lice dispersing to chicks were overwhelmingly nymphs, which cannot be sexed morphologically, and so the p

Enrichment Analysis of Differentially Expressed Genes During Feather Regeneration in Landes Geese (Anser anser).

Feathers are valuable by-products of the poultry industry, and their growth and development markedly have significant impact on economic returns. This study used Landes geese as a model to analyze the expression of core genes involved in feather regeneration and inflammation through comparative transcriptomic analyzes between plucked and unplucked skin tissues. In Landes geese aged 180 days (LD180), 624 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified at 5 days post-plucking (481 upregulated and 143 downregulated), whereas 1851 DEGs were identified at 14 days (1350 upregulated and 501 dow

Presence of infectious novel goose parvovirus in the skin of duck carcass associated with residual feather burrs.

Since the emergence of short beak and dwarfism syndrome (SBDS) among Cherry Valley ducks in China, duck carcasses associated with residual feather burrs have been frequently noticed. Novel goose parvovirus (NGPV) DNAs have been detected in the skins of these carcasses, however, whether NGPV present in these carcass skins is still viable remains unclear. In this study, skin samples were collected from duck carcasses with feather burrs at a local slaughterhouse. These samples were homogenized, and the sterilized homogenates were used to inoculate 9-day-old embryonated Cherry Valley duck eggs for

Gastric perforation associated with feather ingestion in American shad Alosa sapidissima housed in a multispecies habitat.

Pathological conditions associated with feather ingestion have rarely been reported in any species and not previously in fish. From 2013 to 2024, 87 American shad Alosa sapidissima collected from the wild for display purposes were housed in a multispecies habitat within a zoological facility, alongside various fish, invertebrate and bird species from the St. Lawrence Estuary (Quebec, Canada) ecozone. Since 2013, 81 of the 87 shad either died or were euthanized due to health issues, and macroscopic examinations were performed on 36 of these. Bird feathers were present within the gastric lumen i

Do birds of a feather leave the nest together? The role of sibling personality similarity in the transition to adulthood.

Empirical evidences on intragenerational transmission of life course have been demonstrated and that interpersonal similarity may moderate the effect. In particular, siblings who are more similar in their demographic characteristics are more likely to follow each other's life course transitions. Focusing on parental home-leaving and building upon the social influence processes and similarity-attraction effects, this study investigates whether the association between siblings' departures from the parental home increases when they are similar in the Big Five personality traits, like similarity i

The effects of urban thermal heterogeneity and feather coloration on oxidative stress and metabolism of pigeons (Columba livia).

Urbanization stands out as a significant anthropogenic factor, exerting selective pressures on ecosystems and biotic components. A notable outcome of urbanization is thermal heterogeneity where the emergence of Urban Heat Islands is characterized by elevated air and surface temperatures compared to adjacent rural areas. Investigating the influence of thermal heterogeneity on urban animals could offer insights into how temperature variations can lead to phenotypic shifts. Urban pigeons (Columba livia) serve as an excellent model for studying urban thermal effects, given the melanism variations,

Monitoring Phytate Hydrolysis Using Serial Blood Sampling and Feather Myo-Inositol Levels in Broilers.

Phytate forms insoluble precipitates with various cations that are recalcitrant to digestion in poultry. Dietary supplementation with exogenous phytase has been shown to improve phytate solubility and digestibility and, in turn, improve animal growth performance. Although the kinetics of phytate hydrolysis by exogenous phytase are well described in vitro, the progression of the reaction in vivo is still not well defined. The aim of the present study was, therefore, to monitor the kinetic variation of myo-inositol (myo-Ins) levels in both circulation and feather following exogenous phytase supp

A New Species of Ostracod (Crustacea) Associated with a Feather Star: First Report of Ostracoda from Crinoidea.

We describe Obesostoma crinophilum sp. nov. (Ostracoda: Podocopida: Paradoxostomatidae) obtained from the body surface of the feather star Antedon serrata A. H. Clark, 1908 (Crinoidea: Comatulida: Antedonidae). This is the first report of Ostracoda associated with Crinoidea. None of the highly specialized appendages and/or carapace that are related to a commensal lifestyle were observed in O. crinophilum sp. nov. Therefore, the relationship between O. crinophilum sp. nov. and A. serrata must be transient rather than obligatory. However, O. crinophilum sp. nov. has a more developed hook-like di
