Better at what cost? The contrasting effect of norm feedback on exercise behaviours and body image.

Descriptive norm feedback informing people they have performed below average on an exercise task can motivate improvements in their subsequent performance and exertion. However, no research has examined whether such feedback has concurrent negative effects. We addressed this in a pre-registered lab experiment. Participants (N = 120) completed a brief no-equipment exercise workout twice. Prior to and during Trial 2, participants either received no feedback (control condition) or feedback that their Trial 1 performance was 30% below (high norm condition) or 30% above (low norm condition) the ave

The Reward Positivity Tracks Positive Reward Prediction Errors From Feedback to Cues During Reinforcement Learning.

How does the brain learn to predict rewards? According to temporal difference (TD) learning theory, reward prediction errors (RPEs) should shift from the time of outcome delivery to earlier predictive cues as stimulus-action-outcome associations are learned. The reward positivity, an electrophysiological signal believed to index sensitivity of the anterior midcingulate cortex to positive RPEs, should progressively transfer from feedback to predictive cues during learning. However, this core prediction of the reward positivity has remained largely untested. We recorded the EEG from 73 healthy a

Sensitivity to Peer Feedback in Young Adolescents with Symptoms of ADHD: Examination of Neurophysiological and Self-Report Measures.

Many youth with ADHD experience peer difficulties, but the mechanisms underlying this dysfunction remain unknown. Very little work has examined neurophysiological measures of social feedback processing in relation to ADHD symptoms. The goal of this study was to examine associations of ADHD symptoms with indicators of sensitivity to social feedback in a laboratory task and self-report of rejection sensitivity. A large community sample of 10- to 15-year-old adolescents (N = 391; Mage = 12.64, 48.6% girls) participated in the study. Mothers rated youth ADHD symptoms. Youth completed the Island Ge

Advantages of melodic over rhythmic movement sonification in bimanual motor skill learning.

An important question for skill acquisition is whether and how augmented feedback can be designed to improve the learning of complex skills. Auditory information triggered by learners' actions, movement sonification, can enhance learning of a complex bimanual coordination skill, specifically polyrhythmic bimanual shape tracing. However, it is not clear whether the coordination of polyrhythmic sequenced movements is enhanced by auditory-specified timing information alone or whether more complex sound mappings, such as melodic sonification, are necessary. Furthermore, while short-term retention

Perspectives of probabilistic inferences: Reinforcement learning and an adaptive network compared.

The assumption that people possess a strategy repertoire for inferences has been raised repeatedly. The strategy selection learning theory specifies how people select strategies from this repertoire. The theory assumes that individuals select strategies proportional to their subjective expectations of how well the strategies solve particular problems; such expectations are assumed to be updated by reinforcement learning. The theory is compared with an adaptive network model that assumes people make inferences by integrating information according to a connectionist network. The network's weight

Altering the visuomotor gain. Evidence that motor plans deal with vector quantities.

Two experiments investigated the effects of providing nonveridical knowledge of the results (KR) in a visuomanual task in which participants pointed to briefly (200 ms) presented targets without seeing their hand. By showing after each trial the movement endpoint displaced radially with respect to its true position, we were able to alter progressively the gain of the visuomanual loop. In experiment 1, the KR was provided only for transversal movements and for one target distance, but the effect generalized to all directions and all distances. Moreover, it also generalized to the other hand tha

Reversal learning impairments in the maternal immune activation rat model of schizophrenia.

One of the cognitive symptoms observed in schizophrenia is decreased flexibility in several tasks, including reversal learning. Reversal learning has previously been tested in rats following maternal immune activation (MIA), a risk factor for schizophrenia, with varying results. Whereas some previous studies have shown that MIA rats are slower to learn a reversal, others have reported more rapid learning compared with controls. Several of these latter studies have, however, used a T-maze task with aversive, negative reinforcement as a motivating factor. Because most human studies use positive

Cognitive mechanisms of social anxiety reduction: an examination of specificity and temporality.

Cognitive theories posit that exposure-based treatments exert their effect on social anxiety by modifying judgmental biases. The present study provides a conservative test of the relative roles of changes in judgmental biases in governing social anxiety reduction and addresses several limitations of previous research. Longitudinal, within-subjects analysis of data from 53 adults with a Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (4th ed.; American Psychiatric Association, 1994) social phobia diagnosis revealed that reductions in probability and cost biases accounted for significant v

Links Between Altered Feedback Learning and Symptoms of Depression: Insights From the FRN and Feedback-Locked N170.

Blunted electrophysiological and striatal responses to reward have been suggested as biomarkers or endophenotypes for depression. However, previous studies did not differentiate between learning from immediate and learning from delayed feedback, which involves different neural structures. The aim of the present study was to clarify whether depression alters learning from both immediate and delayed feedback. We investigated the influence of current and past depressive symptom severity and familial history of depression in a mixed clinical and nonclinical sample of 45 individuals on two event-re

Metacognitive training facilitates optimal cognitive offloading.

Cognitive offloading refers to the use of physical actions and the external environment to reduce cognitive demand. Offloading strategies such as creating external reminders instead of relying on internal memory are highly effective and play a key role in supporting real-world cognition. Previous work has shown that people have systematic biases in their offloading strategies, which are related to biased metacognitive evaluations of cognitive ability. While metacognitive interventions could potentially mitigate these biases, research investigating their effects has produced mixed results. Here

Impact of teacher feedback on social working memory and associations with students' fear of evaluation in adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Social working memory (SWM) plays a vital role in cognitive processes and social interactions, and it develops rapidly during adolescence. The ability to learn from external feedback increases considerably during adolescence. Teacher feedback is one of the most important types of external feedback, however, its impact on the SWM, particularly in social emotional working memory, in adolescents and its relationship with fear of evaluation remains to be elucidated. METHODS: To address these questions, this study employed a classic facial-emotional 1-back task to examine emotional wor

The Effects of Reliable Social Feedback on Language Learning: Insights from Electroencephalography and Pupillometry.

Language learning is often a social process, and social feedback may play a motivational role. We examined the neurophysiological correlates of word learning with feedback varying in reliability (accuracy) and social content. In a forced-choice task, participants learned to associate novel auditory words with known objects and received feedback. There were three types of feedback: Social Reliable (always providing accurate feedback regarding performance), Social Unreliable (providing random feedback: 50% correct and 50% incorrect feedback irrespectively of the performance), and Symbolic Reliab

Delaying feedback compensates for impaired reinforcement learning in developmental dyslexia.

A theoretical framework suggests that developmental dyslexia is characterized by abnormalities in brain structures underlying the procedural learning and memory systems while the declarative learning and memory systems are presumed to remain intact or even enhanced (Procedural Deficit Hypothesis). This notion has been supported by a substantial body of research, which focused on each system independently. However, less attention has been paid to interactions between these memory systems which may provide insights as to learning situations and conditions in which learning in dyslexia can be imp

When Lone Wolf Defectors Undermine the Power of the Opt-Out Default.

High levels of cooperation are a central feature of human society, and conditional cooperation has been proposed as one proximal mechanism to support this. The counterforce of free-riding can, however, undermine cooperation and as such a number of external mechanisms have been proposed to ameliorate the effects of free-riding. One such mechanism is setting cooperation as the default (i.e., an opt-out default). We posit, however, that in dynamic settings where people can observe and condition their actions on others' behaviour, 'lone wolf' defectors undermine initial cooperation encouraged by a

On the edge: haptic discrimination of edge sharpness.

The increasing ubiquity of haptic displays (e.g., smart phones and tablets) necessitates a better understanding of the perceptual capabilities of the human haptic system. Haptic displays will soon be capable of locally deforming to create simple 3D shapes. This study investigated the sensitivity of our haptic system to a fundamental component of shapes: edges. A novel set of eight high quality shape stimuli with test edges that varied in sharpness were fabricated in a 3D printer. In a two alternative, forced choice task, blindfolded participants were presented with two of these shapes side by

Decreased interhemispheric resting-state functional connectivity in first-episode, drug-naive major depressive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is shown to have structural and functional abnormalities in specific brain areas and connections by recent neuroimaging studies. However, little is known about the alterations of the interhemispheric resting-state functional connectivity (FC) in patients with MDD. In the present study, we used a newly developed voxel-mirrored homotopic connectivity (VMHC) method to investigate the interhemispheric FC of the whole brain in patients with MDD at rest. METHODS: Twenty-four first-episode, drug-naive patients with MDD and 24 age-, gender-, and education-m

Strategies to increase exercise-report correspondence by boys with moderate mental retardation: collateral changes in intention-exercise correspondence.

Correspondence between verbal and nonverbal behavior in an exercise room was taught to 4 13-year-old boys diagnosed with moderate mental retardation. Participants were asked prior to each exercise session which exercise machine(s) they intended to use. No contingencies on stating intentions (promising) were applied. Following the exercise session, participants were asked to say (report) which machine(s) they had used. Following the baseline condition, do-report correspondence training was introduced sequentially across participants. During do-report correspondence training, accurate reporting

Improvement of visual acuity in partially and fully sighted subjects as a function of practice, feedback, and instructional techniques.

Three experiments were conducted to examine improvement of partially (20/200 or 6/60) and normally (20/20 or 6/6) sighted adults. Measures of resolution and vernier acuity were examined in the first two experiments to determine whether practice, feedback, and instructions would have differential effects on the degree of visual improvement achieved in a 20-min. testing session. The results indicated extensive visual work to be the important factor in the improvement of impaired vision. The third experiment compared monocular and binocular depth perception of individuals with unilateral optic at

Effects of augmented feedback delay on neural correlates of feedback processing in motor practice.

Distinct neural correlates are associated with the processing of augmented feedback during motor learning. To examine the basic neural response of delayed augmented feedback, 33 participants practiced a right-arm flexion-extension-movement performed with an arm-lever-device in 192 trials with subsequent feedback presentation. The movement sequence consisted of three movement reversals, which were practiced with the goal of minimizing errors in spatial accuracy. Based on a performance-adaptive bandwidth for spatial movement accuracy, participants received delayed augmented feedback indicating w
