Mitigation of variability between competitively fed dairy cows through increased feed delivery frequency.

The objective of this study was to determine whether increased frequency of total mixed ration (TMR) delivery could mitigate the effects of feed bunk competition on the behavior and productivity of individual lactating dairy cows within a group. We hypothesized that, for competitively fed cows, a greater frequency of TMR delivery would improve access to feed, and reduce individual variability in behavior, meal patterns, and production between cows. Sixteen lactating Holstein dairy cows (first lactation = 4, second lactation = 5, ≥ third lactation = 7) averaging 72 ± 35 d in milk and producing

Short communication: limit feeding affects behavior patterns and feeding motivation of dairy heifers.

The study objective was to assess the effects of limit feeding dairy heifers on behavior patterns and feeding motivation. Ten Holstein heifers (291.6±39.2d of age, weighing 324.2±61.2kg; mean ± SD) were exposed to each of 2 dietary treatments, in a random order, over 2 successive 26-d treatment periods (14-d adaptation period and a 12-d data collection period) using a crossover design: (1) a high-forage total mixed ration (TMR), provided ad libitum (CON) and (2) a low-forage TMR, limit-fed at 2.05% body weight (LF). Heifers were fed daily at 1100h and motivation to access a low-nutritive feeds

Comparison of feeding among multiple birth infants.

Mothers of multiples who choose to feed their infants breast milk are faced with a seemingly overwhelming set of circumstances. Since mothers of multiples could potentially feed their infants differing proportions of breast milk, current methods of obtaining breastfeeding data for mothers of singletons may not adequately describe the breastfeeding behaviors of mothers of twins and triplets. The goal of our study was to determine the proportion of breast milk each infant of a multiple set was fed over a six-month period and compare the feeding regimens of sibling infants. Results of this retros

Field evaluation of capsaicin as a rodent aversion agent for poultry feed.

Developing additional techniques for reducing animal feed contamination by rodents and controlling rodent populations is critical to efforts aimed at reducing the occurrence of Salmonella spp infection on poultry farms. Capsaicin, a compound found in chili peppers of the genus Capsicum, produces a burning sensation in the mouth of mammals and is used effectively as an animal deterrent for some pest species. Applied to poultry feed, capsaicin may be effective as an aversive agent to deter rodent feeding and enhance acceptability of rodenticide baits. We tested capsaicin-treated poultry diets (2

Know the Flow: Milk Flow Rates From Bottle Nipples Used in the Hospital and After Discharge.

BACKGROUND: Milk flow rate may play an important role in an infant's ability to safely and efficiently coordinate sucking, swallowing, and breathing during feeding. PURPOSE: To test milk flow rates from bottle nipples used in the hospital and after discharge. METHODS: Bottle nipples used in hospitals (10 unique types) and available nationwide at major retailers (15 unique types) were identified. For each of the 25 nipple types, 15 nipples of that type were tested by measuring the amount of infant formula extracted in 1 minute by a breast pump. Mean milk flow rate (mL/min) and coefficient of

Impact of breastfeeding and/or bottle-feeding on surgical wound dehiscence after cleft lip repair in infants: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Immediately after cleft lip repair, breastfeeding and bottle-feeding are generally restricted to avoid placing tension on the surgical incision. However, no consensus about feeding methods after cleft lip repair has been reached. The objective of this systematic review was to examine the impact of breastfeeding and/or bottle-feeding on surgical wound dehiscence after cleft lip repair in infants. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We searched PubMed, CINAHL, EMBASE, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), and Mednar from October to November 2017. Two reviewers independently as

Improving nutritional practices in premature infants can increase their growth velocity and the breastfeeding rates.

AIM: This study analysed the changes in growth velocity (GV) of preterm infants weighing <1500 g based on different nutritional practices over a 24-year period. METHODS: A retrospective study with prospectively collected data was performed in a level three Spanish neonatal intensive care unit. Data on birthweight, gestational age (GA) and GV were collected from 1990 to 2013 and breastfeeding data were gathered from 2000. A generalised linear model corrected by GA and small for gestational age was applied. Multiple mean comparisons between the levels of the variables of interest were performed

Efficacy of Mealtime Interventions for Malnutrition and Oral Intake in Persons With Dementia: A Systematic Review.

Malnutrition and weight loss are highly prevalent in persons with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias. Oral intake is an important interventional target for addressing these nutritional consequences. However, the efficacy of interventions remains poorly understood as prior syntheses have failed to examine the impact of intervention approaches on malnutrition and hypothesized mechanisms of action in persons with dementia. This review aimed to determine the efficacy of mealtime interventions to improve oral intake and nutritional outcomes in persons with dementia. Four databases yielded 17

Role of obturators and other feeding interventions in patients with cleft lip and palate: a review.

BACKGROUND: Newborns with cleft palate have a distorted maxillary arch at birth. Depending upon the type of cleft, infants suffer from a variety of problems, many of which are related to feeding difficulties. Feeding these babies is an immediate concern because there is evidence of delayed growth of children with cleft lip and palate (CLCP) compared to normal infants. Many methods have been devised to overcome these problems, including the use of special bottles, nipples, and initial obturator therapy. REVIEW: A Pub Med search was conducted using the following search terms: feeding interventi

Delayed access to feed affects broiler small intestinal morphology and goblet cell ontogeny.

Broilers are often deprived of feed and water for up to 48 h after hatch. This delayed access to feed (DAF) can inhibit small intestine development. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of DAF on small intestinal morphology, mRNA abundance of the goblet cell marker Muc2 and absorptive cell marker PepT1, and the distribution of goblet cells in young broilers. Cobb 500 chicks, hatching within a 12-h window, were randomly allocated into 3 groups: control with no feed delay (ND), 24-h feed delay (DAF24), and 36-h feed delay (DAF36). Morphology, gene expression, and in situ hybr

Minimal breastfeeding.

Current advice to breastfeeding mothers is that breasts must be emptied regularly and frequently to help maintain lactation. A method of maintaining lactation, minimal breastfeeding, in which mothers nurse once or twice a day without expressing the breast between breastfeedings was investigated. A convenience sample of 30 mothers using minimal breastfeeding was interviewed monthly until weaning. These mothers used minimal breastfeeding as a method of slow weaning, a way to combine breastfeeding and work, and a means of comfort-nursing older infants. In all cases, weaning occurred because the m

Effect of the provision of a low-nutritive feedstuff on the behavior of dairy heifers limit fed a high-concentrate ration.

The objective of this study was to examine the behavioral and growth responses of dairy heifers when a low-nutritive feedstuff was provided with (either within or alongside) a limit-fed ration. Twenty-four Holstein dairy heifers (187 ± 11.3 d of age, 231.1 ± 12.0kg), divided in groups of 4, were exposed to each of 3 treatments in a replicated Latin square design with 28-d periods. The treatment rations were (1) total mixed ration (TMR) in a limited amount (TMR-L), (2) TMR in a limited amount with straw (1.8 kg of DM/d per heifer) offered as a choice (TMR-SC), and (3) TMR in a limited amount wi

Impact of breastfeeding or bottle-feeding on surgical wound dehiscence after cleft lip repair in infants: a systematic review protocol.

REVIEW QUESTION/OBJECTIVE: The objective of this systematic review is to examine the impact of breastfeeding or bottle-feeding on surgical wound dehiscence after cleft lip repair in infants. BACKGROUND: Immediately after cleft lip repair in infants, breastfeeding and bottle-feeding are generally restricted. Alternative feeding methods such as spoon-feeding are recommended to avoid placing tension on the surgical wound. However, some studies have reported that alternative feeding methods are a source of stress to the infant and cause them to cry incessantly, resulting in postoperative weight l

A comparison of the safety of cupfeedings and bottlefeedings in premature infants whose mothers intend to breastfeed.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the safety of cupfeeding, an alternative feeding method, to bottlefeeding, the current standard of artificial feeding in the United States, in preterm infants whose mothers intend to breastfeed. STUDY DESIGN: In a prospective, randomized crossover study, 56 infants <or=34 weeks at birth, whose mothers indicated a desire to breastfeed, were studied. Skin-to-skin care and attempts at breast were encouraged frequently when babies were physiologically stable. When infants were >or=34 weeks' corrected gestational age, the order of the first two non-breast oral feedings was ra

Genetic merit of sires for ad libitum residual feed intake has no adverse effects on carcass and ham quality traits of restricted-fed heavy pigs.

This study evaluated the influence of sire genetic merit for residual feed intake (RFI) on carcass and ham quality traits in heavy pigs raised under the restricted feeding conditions typical of Protected Designation of Origin dry-cured ham production. A total of 417 purebred C21 Goland pigs, offspring of 23 sires, were randomly assigned to ad libitum, restricted medium-protein, or restricted low-protein dietary treatments. Sire breeding values (EBV) for RFI were estimated using RFI records of ad libitum-fed progeny between 96 and 161 kg body weight. Sires were classified into three RFI groups:
