Implicit bias to food and body cues in eating disorders: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Rigid, restrictive eating patterns, fear of gaining weight, body image concerns, but also binge eating episodes with loss of control leading to overweight, at times followed by compensatory measures to control weight, are typical symptoms in eating disorders (EDs). The regulation of food intake in EDs may underlie explicit processes that require cognitive insight and conscious control or be steered by implicit mechanisms that are mostly automatic, rapid, and associated with affective-rather than cognitive-processing. While introspection is not capable of assessing implicit response

Disordered eating practices in gastrointestinal disorders.

PURPOSE: To systematically review evidence concerning disordered eating practices in dietary-controlled gastrointestinal conditions. Three key questions were examined: a) are disordered eating practices a feature of GI disorders?; b) what abnormal eating practices are present in those with GI disorders?; and c) what factors are associated with the presence of disordered eating in those with GI disorders? By exploring these questions, we aim to develop a conceptual model of disordered eating development in GI disease. METHODS: Five key databases, Web of Science with Conference Proceedings (190

An Important Springboard Toward Establishing Diagnostic Connection Between Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder and Pediatric Feeding Disorder.

Diagnostic ambiguity has surrounded the two primary diagnoses for dysfunctional feeding and eating in pediatric populations-that is, pediatric feeding disorder (PFD) and avoidant restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID). Recent expert consensus emphasized the need for diagnostic refinement to enhance understanding and improve clinical and research activities for both conditions. With the proposed revision of ARFID, Zickgraf and colleagues provide a research grounded springboard for beginning the revision process. The proposal centers upon a new Criterion A that emphasizes ARFID as a disorder d

Eating Behaviors of Children with Autism-Pilot Study.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is the most recognized neuropsychiatric disorder of childhood. Comorbid conditions (such as feeding disorders) are more common among people with autism than among the general population. The most frequent somatic disorders in autistic children include the gastrointestinal disorders observed in 46-91% of patients. The purpose of this study was the evaluation of the nutrition of children with autism, with particular emphasis placed on feeding in the first year of life, in comparison to the group of healthy peers. Participants included 75 Caucasian children (41 chil

Latent anxiety and depression dimensions differ amongst patients with eating disorders: A Swedish nationwide investigation.

OBJECTIVE: Anxiety and depression symptoms are common in individuals with eating disorders. To study these co-occurrences, we need high-quality self-report questionnaires. The 19-item self-rated Comprehensive Psychopathological Rating Scale for Affective Syndromes (CPRS-S-A) is not validated in patients with eating disorders. We tested its factor structure, invariance, and differences in its latent dimensions. METHOD: Patients were registered by 45 treatment units in the Swedish nationwide Stepwise quality assurance database for specialised eating disorder care (n = 9509). Patients self-repor

Eating Disorder Treatment Access in the United States: Perceived Inequities Among Treatment Seekers.

OBJECTIVE: Although eating disorders are associated with high rates of psychological and physical impairments and mortality, only about 20% of individuals with eating disorders receive treatment. No study has comprehensively assessed treatment access for those with these disorders in the United States. The authors examined access to eating disorder treatments and how it might vary among some populations. METHODS: Seekers of treatment for eating disorders (N=1,995) completed an online assessment of clinical demographic and anthropometric characteristics, barriers to eating disorder treatment a

Reward-related decision making in eating and weight disorders: A systematic review and meta-analysis of the evidence from neuropsychological studies.

Eating disorders (EDs) and overweight/obesity (OW/OB) are serious public health concerns that share common neuropsychological features and patterns of disturbed eating. Reward-related decision making as a basic neurocognitive function may trans-diagnostically underlie both pathological overeating and restricted eating. The present meta-analysis synthesizes the evidence from N=82 neuropsychological studies for altered reward-related decision making in all ED subtypes, OW and OB. The overall effect sizes for the differences between currently-ill ED patients and OW/OB people and controls were Hed

A lateral hypothalamus to basal forebrain neurocircuit promotes feeding by suppressing responses to anxiogenic environmental cues.

Animals must consider competing information before deciding to eat: internal signals indicating the desirability of food and external signals indicating the risk involved in eating within a particular environment. The behaviors driven by the former are manifestations of hunger, and the latter, anxiety. The connection between pathologic anxiety and reduced eating in conditions like typical depression and anorexia is well known. Conversely, anti-anxiety drugs such as benzodiazepines increase appetite. Here, we show that GABAergic neurons in the diagonal band of Broca (DBBGABA) are responsive to

Risk Factors Related to Eating Disorders in a Romanian Children Population.

(1) Background: The complex known as avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) is one of the eating disorders that cannot be explained by chronic disease. The aim of this study was to determine the characteristics of patients who were identified as being at risk of developing ARFID and referred to paediatricians, according to their age and duration of symptoms. (2) Methods: Children aged 2-10 years (Group 1) presenting with eating disorders were initially recruited in the "Dr. Victor Gomoiu" Clinical Children Hospital in Bucharest. Group 2 included patients presenting for routine paedi

The Relationship of Self-identified Weight Status With Perceived Mental and Physical Health.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined whether individuals with higher weight (body mass index in the overweight or obesity range) self-identified as having overweight or obesity (Ow/Ob). The study also examined whether self-identifying as having Ow/Ob was associated with perceived mental health, perceived physical health, depression, and eating disorder psychopathology. METHODS: Four study groups were created: those with Ow/Ob who self-identified as having Ow/Ob (Ow/Ob+), those with Ow/Ob who did not self-identify as having Ow/Ob (Ow/Ob-), those with core features of binge-eating disorder (BED) and

Back to the future: Progressing memory research in eating disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Human behaviors, thoughts, and emotions are guided by memories of the past. Thus, there can be little doubt that memory plays a fundamental role in the behaviors (e.g., binging), thoughts (e.g., body-image concerns), and emotions (e.g., guilt) that characterize eating disorders (EDs). Although a growing body of research has begun to investigate the role of memory in EDs, this literature is limited in numerous ways and has yet to be integrated into an overarching framework. METHODS: In the present article, we provide an operational framework for characterizing different domains of m

Early maladaptive schemas in eating disorders: A systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: Research and theory suggest the aetiological nature and symptomatic profile of eating disorders (EDs) can be explained by multiple factors, including the development of early maladaptive schemas (EMS). Yet, there is lack of consensus regarding the evidence supporting the relationship between EMS and EDs. Therefore, this systematic review aimed to examine existing literature concerning the relationship between different ED diagnoses and EMS to provide a synthesis and evaluation of relevant research. METHOD: A comprehensive literature search of four electronic databases was conducted

[Sleep related eating disorder].

Nighttime eating is categorized as either sleep-related eating disorder (SRED) or night eating syndrome (NES). Critical reviews of the literature on both disorders have suggested that they are situated at opposite poles of a disordered eating spectrum. The feeding behavior in SRED is characterized by recurrent episodes of eating after an arousal from nighttime sleep with amnesia. Conversely, NES could be considered as an abnormality in the circadian rhythm of meal timing with a normal circadian timing of sleep onset. Both conditions clearly concentrate to occur during young adulthood, and are

Increased rates of eating disorders and their symptoms in women with major depressive disorder and anxiety disorders.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with eating disorders (EDs) have increased rates of major depressive disorder (MDD) and anxiety disorders. Yet, few studies have investigated rates of EDs and their symptoms in individuals presenting with MDD/anxiety disorders. Identifying potential disordered eating in people with MDD/anxiety disorders is important because even subclinical disordered eating is associated with reduced quality of life, and undiagnosed eating pathology may hinder treatment progress for both MDD/anxiety disorders and comorbid EDs. METHOD: We compared rates of EDs (anorexia nervosa, bulimi

Covid-19: Signs and symptoms related to the feeding behavior.

COVID-19 reached pandemic level in March 2020 and the number of confirmed cases continued to increase worldwide. The clinical course of the disease has not yet been fully characterized, and some specific symptoms related to smell, taste, and feeding behavior require further examination. The present study aimed to assess the presence of symptoms related to the feeding behavior occurred during and/or after COVID-19 in adults residing in Portugal and to link them to disease severity using a multivariate approach. Data were collected from May to September 2020, through a questionnaire answered onl

Eating Disorders in U.S. Active Duty Military Members and Veterans: A Systematic Review.

INTRODUCTION: Feeding and eating disorders can be difficult to treat and frequently co-occur with other mental health conditions. The last systematic review of eating disorders in a military and veteran population was published in 2015. An updated review is warranted to re-examine the current literature on eating disorders in the active duty and veteran populations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A systematic review that described the prevalence, co-occurrence of other disorders and/or events, and health care utilization of U.S. active duty members and veterans was conducted using the Preferred Repor

Shame facets as predictors of problematic eating behaviors: An ecological momentary assessment study.

It is well-established that negative affect acts as predictor and maintenance factor of problematic eating behaviors. However, the relevance of different facets of negative affect is unclear. While guilt was consistently shown as having a relevant contribution in relation with problematic eating patterns, shame might play a similar role. The current study used an ecological momentary assessment design to assess associations between facets of shame and subsequent disturbed eating behaviors. The study included 57 females with high levels of eating disorders (ED) symptomatology who completed five
