A common entrapment site of the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve (LFCN) is in the vicinity of the inguinal ligament. However the more distal segment of this nerve can also be affected. Electrophysiological evaluation of this nerve is difficult. Additionally, available methods have failed in the lesion localization of LFCN. In this study, we aimed to evaluate nerve conduction study in different segments of the LFCN. Nerve action potentials of the LFCN were recorded with distal surface electrodes from a relatively distant point (about 30 cm caudal to the spina iliaca anterior superior). An electr

BACKGROUND: Surgical treatment of entrapment neuropathies based on nerve decompression. A different approach applies in the case of meralgia paraesthetica affecting the purely sensory lateral femoral cutaneous nerve (LFCN). Established treatment options include both decompression and LFCN neurectomy. The latter not only provides symptomatic relief but also enables proper histopathological analysis, offering deeper insight into the etiopathogenesis of meralgia paraesthetica.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: 14 LFCNs neurectomies were performed 13 patients at our department between 2015 and 2022. Histopath

Femoral nerve injury is a rare but devastating complication of direct anterior approach total hip arthroplasty that occurs in about 1% of the cases and could potentially lead to debilitating loss of knee extension. In this case report, we present a case of femoral nerve injury following direct anterior approach hip arthroplasty with an inability to extend the affected knee, gait instability, and multiple falls. For this patient, an innovative functional adductor magnus muscle transfer was performed to restore knee extension. At 6 months after surgery, the patient's knee extension was partly re

BACKGROUND: The lateral femoral cutaneous nerve is derived from the dorsal branches of the L2 and L3 spinal nerves. It travels across the pelvis and heads towards the anterior superior iliac spine. It passes under the lateral part of the inguinal ligament and then divides into 2 branches, which are responsible for sensory innervation of the anterolateral and lateral skin of the thigh. However, the course of this nerve can vary morphologically. Numerous differences have been observed in its exit from the pelvis and in the number of its main trunks and branches. Additionally, its angle with the

OBJECTIVE: Because of the challenging anatomic location, corpectomies are performed less often at the fourth lumbar vertebral body than at other levels. Our objective was to review the literature of L4 corpectomy and anterior column reconstruction.
METHODS: A literature search in the Medline/PubMed database was conducted following the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines to identify all relevant cases and cases series describing corpectomies of the L4 vertebral body using "lumbar" AND "corpectomy" as search terms. We present an illustrative ca

BACKGROUND: Inguinal hernias account for 75% of abdominal wall hernias, with a lifetime risk of 27% in men and 3% in women. Major complications are recurrence, chronic pain, and surgical site infection, but their frequency is low. Few studies have reported a calcified mesh causing neuropathy by chronic compression of the femoral nerve after mesh & plug inguinal hernia repair. This is the first report of laparoscopic plug removal for femoral colic due to femoral nerve irritation cause by a calcified plug after mesh & plug inguinal hernia repair.

This report describes a rare case of femoral nerve paresthesia caused by an acetabular paralabral cyst of the hip joint. A 68-year-old woman presented with a 6-month history of right hip pain and paresthesia along the anterior thigh and radiating down to the anterior aspect of the knee. Radiography showed osteoarthritis with a narrowed joint space in the right hip joint. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a cyst with low T1- and high T2-weighted signal intensity arising from a labral tear at the anterior aspect of the acetabulum. The cyst was connected to the joint space and displaced the femor

BACKGROUND: Although injury to the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve (LFCN) is a known complication of anterior approaches to the hip and pelvis, no study has quantified its' incidence in anterior arthroplasty procedures.
QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: We therefore defined the incidence, functional impact, and natural history of LFCN neuropraxia after an anterior approach for both hip resurfacing (HR) and primary total hip arthroplasty (THA).
METHODS: We followed 132 patients who underwent an anterior hip approach (55 THA; 77 HR). We administered self-reported questionnaires for sensory deficits of LFCN,

Background Effective pain management in patients with femoral fractures, such as intertrochanteric fractures, remains a major challenge in emergency medicine. Ultrasound-guided femoral nerve blocks administered on arrival have emerged as a promising alternative to conventional parenteral analgesics due to their ease of administration, rapid onset of analgesia, prolonged sensory blockade, and reduced risk of systemic adverse effects. Dexmedetomidine, a selective α2-adrenergic agonist, has been increasingly studied as an adjuvant to local anesthetics because of its ability to hasten the onset an

BACKGROUND: Fractures of the long bones in the lower limbs are injuries that cause severe to extremely severe pain, posing risks to the patient's circulation, respiration, and even life. Pain management for patients with lower limb long bone fractures in the emergency department is critically important.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of ultrasound-guided femoral and sciatic nerve blocks in patients with lower limb long bone fractures in the emergency department (ED). The secondary objective was to assess the effectiveness of this procedure as an adjunct to pain manage

BACKGROUND: Peripheral nerve block has an anti-inflammatory effect that is confirmed in animal studies, while inconclusive in human studies. Dexmedetomidine (DEX), a highly selective α2-adenoceptor agonist, has a potent anti-inflammatory effect. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of DEX added to ropivacaine for femoral nerve block (FNB) on local inflammatory response after total knee arthroplasty (TKA).
METHODS: Sixty patients scheduled for TKA were randomized into two equal groups in a prospective randomized study. They were all treated with FNB preoperatively. In group R, 20 m

BACKGROUND: Femoral nerve palsy (FNP) is a relatively uncommon complication following total hip arthroplasty (THA). There is little recent literature regarding the incidence of FNP and the natural course of recovery.
METHODS: Using our institutional database, we identified postoperative FNPs from 17,350 consecutive primary THAs performed from 2011 to 2016. Hip exposures were performed using a direct lateral (modified Hardinge), direct anterior (Smith-Peterson), anterolateral (Watson-Jones), or posterolateral (Southern or Moore) approach. Patients with FNP were contacted to provide a subjectiv
