The aim is to present a unique clinical case of a 62-year-old male with an ossifying fibroma (OF) in the left orbit. He presented with a slow-growing mass with bone consistency which easily shifted with palpation. After removal, it was given the histopathological diagnosis of osteoma. However, the lesion grew back rapidly and it became even larger 4 months later. After a computed tomography scan with a contrast medium, another surgery was performed. The histopathological diagnosis of the recurrent lesion was an epidermal cyst with secondary degenerative changes. As both diagnoses did not fit t

An unusual case of ossifying fibroma involving the right temporomandibular joint (TMJ) in a 7-year-old girl is presented. The treatment protocol comprised TMJ reconstruction with a costochondral graft following radical tumour resection, with the use of both pedicled and free fat grafts to improve the surgical outcome. Pathological examination confirmed the diagnosis. Aspects of the treatment are discussed.

The purpose of this article is to report a case of ossifying fibroma in the mandible associated with hyperparathyroid-jaw tumor syndrome, in a 46-year-old Caucasian female, surgically resected and reconstructed with iliac crest bone, followed by implant placement. This is a rare syndrome with an autosomal dominant pattern, with the development of primary hyperparathyroidism mainly due to parathyroid adenomas. Fibro-osseous lesions in the jaws can be present and can also precede the development of the endocrine disorder. As renal abnormalities and uterine tumors can develop, an interdisciplinar

Juvenile psammomatoid ossifying fibroma (JPOF) is an uncommon benign fibro-osseous lesion predominantly arising in the paranasal sinuses and orbits of children and young adults. We report a case of JPOF involving the paranasal sinuses and orbit in a 15-year-old boy that presented due to progressive proptosis and downward displacement of the left eye. The lesion, first described as fibrous dysplasia (FD), was totally removed surgically, and then proved to be a JPOF, by histopathology. We discuss its differential diagnosis with other fibro-osseous lesions, histopathological features, and treatme

A case showing clinical, radiologic, and pathologic features of osteofibrous dysplasia of the tibia and fibula (ossifying fibroma of the long bones) associated with scattered epithelioid islands typical of adamantinoma is reported. The previously suggested relationship between adamantinoma and osteofibrous dysplasia is substantiated by this case.

A boy in his early teens presented with gradually progressive pain and swelling over the anterior aspect of the left upper leg. The insidious onset and firm swelling suggested an infective aetiology, and a provisional diagnosis of chronic osteomyelitis was made. Radiographs demonstrated a well-demarcated lytic lesion in the metaphyseal region of the proximal tibia, further strengthening the clinical suspicion of infection. However, curettage of the lesion and subsequent histopathological analysis revealed a benign fibro-osseous lesion consistent with non-ossifying fibroma (NOF). The patient un

Ossifying fibromas of the head and neck region are classified as cemento-ossifying fibroma (COF) (odontogenic origin), and two types of juvenile ossifying fibromas: juvenile trabecular ossifying fibroma (JTOF), and juvenile psammomatous ossifying fibroma (JPOF). The potential for recurrence in JTOF and JPOF and the discovery of newer molecular signatures necessitates accurate histological classification. Over 12 years (2005-2017), a total of 45 patients with 51 tumours were retrieved and reviewed for clinic-pathological features from the archives of a tertiary care oncology centre. Of 45 cases

Reactive hyperplasias are a group of lesions often seen in the oral mucosa, especially on the gingiva, in association with local irritation or trauma. Peripheral ossifying fibroma (POF) is a common reactive lesion, almost always affecting the tooth-bearing areas of the oral cavity. It is most often encountered in young adults but extremely rare in patients below 10 years of age. Here, we report a unique presentation of peripheral ossifying fibroma affecting the anterior mandible in a three-month-old infant. We also highlight the role of laser in the management of such lesions.

Juvenile aggressive ossifying fibroma is a rare benign but locally aggressive tumor with high recurrent potentials. Juvenile aggressive ossifying fibroma poses diagnostic challenges because of its rapidly growing nature. A 7-years-old female child presented to the pediatric unit of our institution with a 9-month history of right maxillary tumor. An initial diagnosis of Burkitt's lymphoma was made and the child has several courses of chemotherapy without adequate histologic confirmation., She was later referred to the maxillofacial unit where the appropriate diagnosis and treatment were institu

Differential diagnosis of fibrous dysplasia and ossifying fibroma may often pose problems for pathologists. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the value of mutational analysis of the GNAS gene in differentiating these two conditions. DNA samples from patients with fibrous dysplasia (n=30) and ossifying fibroma (n=21) were collected to analyze the presence of GNAS mutations at exons 8 and 9, the two previously reported hotspot regions, using polymerase chain reaction and direct sequencing. In all, 90% (27/30) of cases with fibrous dysplasia showed missense mutations of codon 201 at exon

INTRODUCTION: Ossifying fibroma (OF) is a well-defined benign neoplasm characterized by slow growth and predilection for the posterior mandible site, usually treated by conservative surgical approaches. In this context, Le Fort I Approach (LFIA) has been increasingly used providing good visualization and an easy access to the lesion. It also allows removal of the lesion quickly. Although there are case reports using LFIA for the management of benign neoplasms, odontogenic cysts and tumors of the middle third of face, to our knowledge, only one article describes the use of surgical LFIA for OF

Sinonasal ossifying fibroma is a rare, slow-growing, benign bony tumour, frequently involving the maxilla and mandible in the head and neck region. Although it is known to be the second most frequent fibro-osseous tumour of paranasal sinus, to the best of our knowledge, ossifying fibroma of frontal sinus causing brain abscess has not been presented yet in the relevant literature. We present the clinical, pathological and radiological findings of ossifying fibroma of the frontal sinus associated with brain abscess.

A 22-year-old woman with recurrent psammomatoid-type juvenile ossifying fibroma of the anterior mandible was treated using a mandibular preservation strategy combining local tumor resection with digital model-assisted prophylactic stabilization. Cone-beam computed tomography showed a well-demarcated expansile lesion with marked cortical thinning, indicating that resection alone could leave the residual mandible mechanically vulnerable. Preoperative imaging data were converted into a 1:1 stereolithographic mandibular model for reconstruction plate precontouring, screw-position planning, and est

Juvenile psammomatoid ossifying fibroma (JPOF) is a type of fibro-osseous lesion in which normal bone is replaced by fibrous tissue. Most commonly, it involves the nasal sinuses or orbital bone. It is very important to differentiate it from other fibro-osseous lesions because these lesions have overlapping clinical features. Even though it is a benign condition, it is locally aggressive and rarely extends intracranially. A complete surgical resection is the key to avoid recurrence. We are presenting a case of JPOF in a 16-year-old boy with a large tumor involving the ethmoidal sinuses with lar

Juvenile psammomatoid ossifying fibroma (JPOF) is an osteofibrous neoplasm that originates in the craniofacial skeleton typically during the first three decades of life. JPOFs usually involve the orbit, paranasal sinuses or the jaws. Extensive involvement of the anterior cranial base with compromised visual function is a rare phenomenon. In such clinical context, a definite diagnosis can only be made on the basis of histopathological findings, given the absence of pathognomonic radiological features. Despite being considered a benign entity, JPOFs present a locally aggressive behavior. Therefo

Juvenile ossifying fibroma (JOF) is a rare benign neoplastic fibro-osseous tumor commonly found in the maxilla and mandible of children usually between the ages of five and 15. Patients often present with aggressive, painless growth which is well demarcated from surrounding bone resulting in severe facial asymmetry. JOFs have high recurrence rates if not completely resected and should therefore be treated by a multidisciplinary team of physicians including a neurosurgeon to assess cranial nerve function. This case describes a child who presented to the ED after being referred by his primary ca

Cemento-ossifying fibromas (COFs) are benign fibro-osseous tumors usually found in the mandible and maxilla that can show malignancy in rare situations. COFs usually grow slowly and asymptomatically until they produce local bulges, pain, headaches, and visual impairment, and have a Ki-67 index within 3%, even in aggressive and recurrent cases. Surgical resection can usually provide a satisfactory prognosis. However, no cases of COF transforming into osteosarcoma have been reported. We present a case of COF involving a 58-year-old woman whose initial symptom was hearing loss in the right ear ac

BACKGROUND: Cemento-ossifying fibroma (COF) is a type of benign fibro-osseous tumor that mainly occurs in the maxillofacial region. Bone reconstruction after the surgery is often performed with bone transplantation. However, the present case report describes the accurate diagnosis and successful surgical resection of a COF with periosteum preservation, after which the defect was completely and spontaneously filled with the newly formed bone through a natural process. Case Presentation. A 32-year-old Iranian female patient presented with a history of gradual development of painful swelling, spo
