INTRODUCTION/AIMS: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is associated with substantial financial burden. How financial concerns are documented or addressed in ALS multidisciplinary clinics (MDC) is unclear. We aimed to characterize financial concerns among people living with ALS (pALS) and how they are identified and documented by multidisciplinary clinic staff.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective electronic medical record (EMR) review for people living with ALS (pALS) attending at least two visits at the MDC, identifying documentation of financial concerns across all MDC notes throughout 20

Down syndrome (DS) is a chromosomal condition that is affecting an increasing number of infants born in Saudi Arabia. This study investigates the needs of families with children with DS in Saudi Arabia from mothers' perspectives and in a cultural and religious context. An exploratory qualitative research design was used, and semi-structured interviews were conducted with 14 mothers of children with DS. Interview data were thematically analyzed. The most important need was found to be financial or tangible support. An increase in benefits or monthly financial allowances and social security insu

Military reservists occupy a distinct social position, navigating dual roles as civilians and service members, an intersection that requires tailored intervention strategies. Despite their growing role in the total force, the social determinants of health (SDOH) affecting reservists remain underexamined. We were interested in how SDOH (i.e., education, employment status, financial strain, housing, or social support) influences suicidality, depressive symptoms, and wellbeing. As such, this study analyzed data from 4,007 U.S. military reservists, identifying largely positive mental health outcom

Despite being one of the world's wealthiest cities, approximately one-third of Hong Kong older adults live below the poverty line. Innovatively using the Photovoice research method, this study invited 36 Hong Kong Chinese aging adults to photograph images and voice their concerns and expectations regarding financial care. Insufficient government support, diminishing family support, insecurity and fear regarding future finances, and strong desire for self-sufficiency through early preparation and bridge employment were recurring themes observed in the participants' photographs and narratives. Zeitschrift fur Kinderchirurgie : organ der Deutschen, der Schweizerischen und der Osterreichischen Gesellschaft fur Kinderchirurgie = Surgery in infancy and childhood1987eng
The supply of services to the families of children with spina bifida participating in the South Wales longitudinal study was reviewed. Initially general information and contact with other mothers were the commonest needs; as the children grew older the need for practical, material and financial help took priority. Parents were, generally, very satisfied with support provided by hospital staff with whom they had frequent, regular contact. Contact with health visitors and social workers was considered insufficient and unsatisfactory. Mothers of more severely disabled children were most likely to

BACKGROUND: Caregivers of children with developmental disabilities (DD) often face unmet needs that affect caregiving. This study explored the needs of such caregivers.
METHODS: A descriptive qualitative design was employed for this study. Caregivers of children with DD attending the Neurodevelopmental Clinic at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital were purposively selected. Data were collected through semi-structured, in-depth interviews until saturation was achieved with fourteen (14) participants. The interviews were conducted between October 2021 and January 2022, and data were analysed using thema

This study focuses on a cohort of adults (40-plus) in rural South Africa to unpack associations between physical health and receipt of social support, and the extent to which these associations were moderated by marital status. We use logistic regression to estimate the odds of having received emotional, physical, or financial support separately for men (N = 2247) and women (N = 2609). Our results suggest having an Activity of Daily Living (ADL) limitation or having at least one chronic condition was not significantly associated with social support receipt for women, but having an ADL limitati

BACKGROUND: Informal caregivers, frequently family members or close acquaintances, offer uncompensated care and support to individuals with cardiovascular diseases, confronting diverse challenges such as mental stress, financial strain, and the overall burden of care. Addressing these challenges is vital for both caregivers and patients. This systematic review seeks to identify the factors contributing to caregiver burden among informal caregivers of cardiovascular patients.
METHODS: PubMed, Scopus, ProQuest, Web of Science, and Science Direct were searched from 2000 until July 2023, followin

BACKGROUND: Informal home-based caregivers play a key role in supporting patients with life-limiting illnesses in Rwanda, often assuming primary responsibility for daily palliative care. Despite the sense of purpose caregiving may bring, it is frequently accompanied by emotional, physical, and financial strain that affects caregivers' well-being. However, limited evidence exists regarding their satisfaction with palliative care services and their unmet support needs.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed at exploring the support needs and satisfaction levels of informal home-based caregivers regarding

AIMS: To explore the emotional, physical, social, and economic demands experienced by caregivers of children with cerebral palsy in Mangochi District and identify coping mechanisms and sources of support.
METHOD: A convergent, parallel, mixed-methods design was used. Six focus group discussions with primary caregivers (n = 42) were analysed with thematic analysis. A modified 9-item Burden Scale for Family Caregivers was administered to the same 42 caregivers and summarized using descriptive analysis.
RESULTS: Caregivers were predominantly mothers or grandmothers. The Burden Scale for Family

PROBLEM: The 2008 tuberculosis (TB) surveillance of Chiang Rai Hospital, Chiang Rai, Thailand reported that 8.4% of Thai, 22.7% of hill tribe minority and 25% of migrant patients (n = 736) defaulted from treatment.
CONTEXT: TB patient management in Chiang Rai is complicated due to poverty and HIV stigma. A previous study shows unaffordable travel expense was one of the reasons of patient default.
ACTION: We engaged Chiang Rai women's organizations whose members are of high socioeconomic status to support poor TB patients financially and socially. A group of women formed a team to support the

OBJECTIVES: This study examines the association between financial strain and loneliness among adults aged 66 years and older. Guided by stress-buffering and gender socialization perspectives, it also assesses whether neighborhood cohesion moderates this association and whether this moderation varies by gender.
METHODS: Using two waves of the United Kingdom Household Longitudinal Study that include measures of loneliness and neighborhood cohesion (n = 3,467 individuals; 6,934 person-wave observations), fixed-effects regression models examined whether within-individual changes in financial stra

Pathological gambling poses significant global issues, leading to economic, social, and psychological consequences such as debt, family breakdowns, and mental health problems. While various risk factors for gambling addiction, including comorbid addictions, psychiatric disorders, gender, age, and easy access to gambling venues, have been well-studied, less emphasis is placed on protective factors. Strong social support and higher education are key in mitigating gambling addiction. Higher education, in particular, equips individuals with better decision-making skills and risk management strateg

Most women in prison are poor and suffer from health problems prior to and during incarceration. Policies that impose inmate medical co-payment fees do not consider gender-specific health needs or other financial stressors faced by women in prison. We examine the financial needs and concerns of incarcerated women through the lens of gender and behavioral economics. We conducted individual interviews with 95 women incarcerated in a medium/maximum security prison in the United States. Women described several common financial stressors during confinement: paying for medical care, "working for pen
