OBJECTIVE: To determine abnormal plain radiograph findings of the distal phalanx tuft of the hand (DPTH) associated with systemic sclerosis in adults.
METHODS: A systematic review was developed following the parameters of the PRISMA guidelines in databases: MEDLINE, EMBASE, BIREME, Scielo, Google Scholar and others including as primary outcomes alterations of DPTH (erosions, resorption, sclerosis and proliferation) detected by simple radiography in subjects with systemic sclerosis. The prevalence of radiographic findings was synthesized using the fixed effects model. The statistical associati

We report the results of long-term follow-up after Vickers' physiolysis of the trapezoidal delta phalanx in a boy aged five year and six months with bilateral clinodactyly of the little finger. Radial deviation of the little finger was corrected from 36 degrees to 15 degrees on the left, and from 35 degrees to 15 degrees on the right at last follow-up six years and five months after surgery. The patient's parents were satisfied with the cosmetic appearance. X-ray film showed the abnormal distal epiphyses of the middle phalanges of the little fingers had disappeared.

An infant with skeletal deformities and hypocalcemic convulsions is described. The convulsions, which were first noted in the 5th week of life, as well as the low serum calcium level were transient. The skeletal deformities consited of deformation of the terminal phalanges of the right third finger and right second toe, syndactyly of the third and fourth finger of both hands and left pes equinovarus. X-ray examination revealed abnormal shape and structure of some bones of the hands. The most likely diagnosis is transient congenital idiopathic hypoparathyroidism, which has not yet been describe

The author describes four cases of chondrodysplasia punctata with an hypoplasia of the distal phalanges of the fingers. In these cases, growth disturbance is moderate without asymmetry of the limbs, and the facial dysmorphism is similar to that found in Binder's maxillo-facial dysostosis. The phalangeal anomaly is very important for the diagnosis of chondrodysplasia punctata at an age when epiphyseal stippling is no longer present. The relationship of this form of chondrodysplasia with cases in which there is a deletion of the terminal short arm of the X chromosome is discussed. A possible hyp

OBJECTIVE: To review the methods of metacarpal and phalange lengthening and to point out the problems at present as well as to predict the trend of development in the field.
METHODS: Domestic and abroad literature concerning the methods of metacarpal and phalange lengthening in recent years was reviewed extensively and thoroughly analyzed.
RESULTS: At present, there are many methods to treat the short finger disability, but the methods of metacarpal and phalange lengthening have an advantage, which include closed osteotomy lengthening, callus-lengthening, and modified Ilizarov method. Each s

The present investigation was undertaken to develop a standard method of recording the bone measurements of the normal hand for use in comparative studies of genetic abnormalities of the skeletal system affecting the hand. The data for this study are obtained from the radiographs of the hands of normal 461 males and 565 females aged from 20 to 84 years. Measurements of length and width of all the phalanges and metacarpals are recorded. The phalangeal index and metacarpal index of each bone are obtained by dividing the length by the width. Frequencies of brachymesophalangy of the little finger

Brachydactyly type C (BDC) is characterized by shortening of the middle phalanges of the index, middle, and little fingers. Hyperphalangy of the index and middle finger and shortening of the first metacarpal can also be observed. BDC is a rare genetic condition associated with the GDF5 gene, and this condition has not been confirmed by genetic analysis so far in the Korean population. Herein, we present a case of a 6-yr-old girl diagnosed with BDC confirmed by molecular genetic analysis. The patient presented with shortening of the second and third digits of both hands. Sequence analysis of th

Congenital curved nail of the fourth toe (CNFT) is a rare nail deformity. We report a case of CNFT with thickening and hyperkeratosis at the hyponychium and peripheral nail bed that was successfully treated using a novel surgical technique. A 7-year-old Japanese boy had a clawed nail with thickening and hyperkeratosis at the hyponychium and peripheral nail bed on his bilateral fourth toes. His chief complaint was pain. The nails of the bilateral fourth toes curved plantarly and exhibited thickening and hyperkeratosis of the hyponychium and peripheral nail bed. A surgical approach was planned t

PURPOSE: This study was designed to morphometrically assess the base of the little and ring finger metacarpals as potential osteochondral donors to resurface distal condylar defects of the proximal phalanx.
METHODS: The proximal phalanges were dissected from all 4 fingers in 10 cadaveric hands and the following measurements were obtained from the distal condylar surface: anteroposterior height, radial-ulnar width, and radius of curvature. Measurements were obtained from posteroanterior and lateral radiographic views, which were digitized and analyzed using digital imaging software. Comparable

Dorland's Illustrated Medical Dictionary gives the following definition of dactylitis (deltaalphachitauupsilonlambdaomicronsigma = digit): 'inflammation of a finger or toe'. Although any inflammatory process involving the fingers or toes may be called dactylitis, the term has entered in current use only in some well-defined entities. These differ in the involved tissue of the digit and in the type of involvement. Tuberculous dactylitis is the variant of tuberculous osteomyelitis affecting the short tubular bone of the hands and feet. Radiographs typically show a central, lytic, cystic, and exp

Extensor lag is a common sequella of proximal phalangeal fractures. Proximal phalangeal fractures frequently lead to extensor tendon dysfunction via adhesions and phalanx malunion with angulation and/or shortening. The primary purpose of this study was to quantify the influence of proximal phalangeal angulation and shortening on proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joint extension by examining the effect of isolated proximal phalangeal bone to extensor digitorum communis tendon discrepancy on PIP joint lag. The secondary goal was to determine the reserve of the extensor digitorum communis to overcom

Background: A case is discussed in which a young girl was born with symbrachydactyly of multiple digits in whom nonvascularized proximal toe phalanges were transferred to the aphalangic digits at the age of four. At 39 years of age, she presented incidentally to our clinic and was observed to have a very functional hand with mobile metacarpophalangeal joints in all reconstructed digits. Methods: We present a case report which is discussed in the context of long-term follow-up, and phalangeal growth in the absence of distraction, and a review of the current literature in regards to outcomes for

Chronic proximal interphalangeal joint (PIPJ) instability of the finger is rare, and when it occurs usually requires surgical reconstruction. Complications arising from failed ligament reconstruction may result in a situation more difficult to address than the initial reconstruction. This situation is more likely for the finger than other orthopaedic reconstructions because the phalangeal bones are so small. We present a case of chronic radial PIPJ instability of the finger and severe bony defect caused by multiple failed ligament reconstructions that was treated successfully using a modificat

The subcondylar fossa is the bony depression between the articulating surface of the proximal and middle phalanges of the fingers that allows for full flexion at the proximal interphalangeal joint. A bony block may form in the subcondylar fossa secondary to the malunion of a proximal phalangeal neck fracture. If there is a substantial loss of flexion, surgical correction could be indicated. Corrective osteotomy is technically challenging in the proximal interphalangeal joint area as the phalangeal head is small, creating fixation challenges and carrying the risk of avascular necrosis and joint

The distribution of hair of the right lower limb has been studied in a random sample of 220 healthy Central Indian males 17 to 45 years of age. The common hair patterns observed are the proximal phalangeal hair in all toes in 55.45%, the middle phalangeal hair in the third toe in 8.18%, the tibial on the dorsum of foot in 69.55%, and the pedo-cruro-femoral in the lower limb in 70.00% subjects. Comparison of these findings with those of the right upper limb shows that hairiness of the two limbs is correlated, that the dorsum of foot is less hairy than the dorsum of hand, and that the third and

Tissue expanders can be used over the dorsum of hand and fingers to increase available tissue for flap coverage after release of syndactyly. Herein, we presented an 18-year-old man who had an unusual complex syndactyly in the middle and ring fingers of his right hand. He had also complete fusion of the proximal phalanges. In this report, we described the application of tissue expander to cover separated exposed bones.

Fractures of the neck of the phalanx of the finger are uncommon, but problematic, injuries in children. Displaced fractures may heal with malunion leading to loss of movement or angular deformity. Remodelling of the phalangeal neck is reported to be minimal because of the distance of the fracture from the physis. We report three displaced fractures in two children who presented late. The fractures were treated conservatively and remodelled completely. Both patients regained full movement of the fingers.

Fracture and luxation of the long fingers are particularly frequent in hand trauma. Untreated or poorly treated, they may leave highly disabling sequelae. The aim of treatment is two-fold: to repair the anatomical lesion and to obtain movement as rapidly as possible, the only means of avoiding joint stiffening. It is important to underline that the metacarpo-phalangeal joints usually stiffen in extension and that the proximal interphalangeal joints on the contrary stiffen in flexion. Thus, in case of immobilisation of the hand, an attempt should be made to obtain an "intrinsec plus" immobilisa
