Three-dimensional (3D) printed splints must be lightweight and adequately ventilated to maximize the patient's convenience while maintaining requisite strength. The ensuing loss of strength has a substantial impact on the transformation of a solid splint model into a perforated or porous model. Thus, two methods for making perforations-standard approach and topological optimization-are investigated in this study. The objective of this research is to ascertain the impact of different perforation shapes and their distribution as well as topology optimization on the customized splint model. The s

The purpose of this study was to investigate the functional load capacity of the periodontal ligament (PDL) in a full arch maxilla and mandible model using a numerical simulation. The goal was to determine the functional load pattern in multi- and single-rooted teeth with full and reduced periodontal support. CBCT data were used to create 3D models of a maxilla and mandible. The DICOM dataset was used to create a CAD model. For a precise description of the surfaces of each structure (enamel, dentin, cementum, pulp, PDL, gingiva, bone), each tooth was segmented separately, and the biomechanical

The pre-stress of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) at the intercuspal position (ICP) was often neglected, which would cause errors in the finite element analysis. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of pre-stress on dynamic finite element analysis of the TMJs. One healthy female adult was recruited for medical imaging and motion data acquisition of the reference position (RP) to the ICP and the clicking teeth. The three-dimensional maxillofacial model including the maxilla, mandible, articular cartilages, discs, and discal attachments was reconstructed. Motion from the RP

INTRODUCTION: The mechanical distribution of the mandible is an important factor that affects functional orthosis during Twin-block (TB) appliance correction. Changes in the mandible before and after TB appliance correction are also key factors in maintaining the therapeutic effect. Finite element analysis, a powerful numerical, analytical tool, is widely used to predict the stress and strain distribution of the craniofacial bone that orthodontics generates.
METHODS: The sample was a 14-year-old male patient with Class II malocclusion during growth. A cone-beam computed tomography scan was un

OBJECTIVES: Reconstruction plates (RPs) are commonly used in scapular neck fractures (SNFs): however, RPs have many defects. In this study, we evaluated a newly designed scapular neck anatomical locking compression plate (SNALCP).
METHODS: An SNF finite element model (Miller-type IIB) was constructed. Plates were subsequently implanted into the scapula and fixed with screws that were grouped according to the plate used: SNALCP (A) and RP (B). Finally, loads were applied to record and analyze performance.
RESULTS: Under lateral, anteroposterior, and vertical compression loads, the maximum von

INTRODUCTION: Dynamization of proximal femoral nailing by removal of distal interlocking is one of the recommended treatment options for nonunions of femur fractures. However, in certain inter-/subtrochanteric fractures, gliding of the nail along the femoral shaft is blocked by lateral femoral cortical support of the lag screw. For these cases, Biber et al. proposed lateral cortical notching (LCN), in which the supporting lateral bone is removed. This study investigates the biomechanical effect of LCN on gliding of proximal femoral nailing and stress distribution at the bone/implant interface.

BACKGROUND: This study represents the first finite element (FE) analysis of long-instrumented spinal fusion from the thoracic vertebrae to the pelvis in the context of adult spinal deformity (ASD) with osteoporosis. We aimed to evaluate the von Mises stress in long spinal instrumentation for models that differ in terms of spinal balance, fusion length, and implant type.
METHODS: In this three-dimensional FE analysis, FE models were developed based on computed tomography images from a patient with osteoporosis. The von Mises stress was compared for three different sagittal vertical axes (SVAs)

The percutaneous sacroiliac (SI) screw is a common fixation option for posterior ring disruption in pelvic fractures. However, SI screw placement is difficult and can injure adjacent neurovascular structures. The sacral-alar-iliac screw (SAI) is a safe, reliable free-hand sacral pelvic fixation technique. To investigate the biomechanical stability of SAI for SI joint dislocation, finite element analysis was performed in unstable Tile-Type B and C pelvic ring injuries. The displacement in S1 (fixation of a unilateral S1 segment with one SI screw), TS1 (fixation of the S1 segment with a transsac

The role of the above-knee socket is to ensure the load transfer via the coupling of residual limb-prosthesis with minimal discomfort and without damaging the soft tissues. Modelling is a potential tool to predict socket fit prior to manufacture. However, state-of-the-art models only include the femur in soft tissues submitted to static loads neglecting the contribution of the hip joint. The hip joint is particularly challenging to model because it requires to compute the forces of muscles inserting on the residual limb. This work proposes a modelling of the hip joint including the estimation

Most researchers have performed finite element (FE) analysis of the human forearm fracture by exploring the strength and load transmission of the bones. However, few studies concentrated a complete simulation of the whole forearm complex including ligaments. This paper aims to investigate the load transmission through the bones, contact stress at the joints and strain in the ligaments by using an elaborate FE model, further validating the fracture condition for human forearm. The interosseous ligament was separated into three regions based on the distance to the proximal and distal ends. The F

BACKGROUND: Antero-medialisation osteotomy combined with a distalisation procedure may require a more stable fixation as the osteotomy fragment loses both proximal and distal support. This finite element analysis aimed to compare the mechanical behaviour of different fixation techniques in tibial tubercle antero-medialisation osteotomy combined with distalisation procedure.
METHODS: Tibial tubercle osteotomy combined with distalisation was modelled based on computerised tomography data, which were acquired from a patient with patellar instability requiring this procedure. Six different fixati

OBJECTIVE: To compare the biomechanical properties of percutaneous cement discoplasty (PCD) in the spinal column between different implant-endplate friction.
METHODS: A validated L3-Scarumfinite element (FE) model was modified for simulation. In the PCD model, the L4/5 level was modified based on model 1 (M1) and model 2 (M2). In M1, the interaction between bone cement and endplate was defined as face-to-face contact with a friction coefficient of 0.3; in M2, the contact was defined as a Tie constraint. 7.5 N m moments of four physiological motions and axial load of 15, 100 and 400 N preload
