Smoking and oral health: a population survey in Finland.

OBJECTIVES: A survey was conducted to study smokers' oral health behaviors and attitudes, and to determine if smokers were advised by their dentists to quit smoking. METHODS: A random sample of 1,200 adults 15 to 64 years of age living in the province of North Karelia, Finland, was selected in each of two study years (1990 and 1991) and surveyed using a mail questionnaire. The 102-item questionnaire solicited information on smoking status, oral health behaviors, missing teeth, perceptions of tobacco's harmful effects on oral health, smoking status and quitting, and advice on smoking cessation

Increase of acute frontal sinusitis in southwestern Finland.

The number of patients hospitalized for acute infection in the frontal sinuses at the Department of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology of Turku University Hospital has increased markedly during the last decade. Causes for this increase were evaluated by comparing the backgrounds and medical findings of the 134 patients treated in the years 1977-81 and those of the 421 patients treated in the years 1982-86. Nasal polyps and history of allergic rhinitis were considerably more common in the latter patient group. The disease also seems to recur increasingly in the same patients. Of the aerobic bacteria Strepto

Changing pattern of childhood coeliac disease in Finland.

In the Tampere region in Finland, the incidence of childhood coeliac disease was 1:1,096 between 1964 and 1973 and 1:3,214 from 1974 to 1983. The clinical picture of coeliac disease had changed to milder forms, resulting in an upward shift of age at diagnosis. Coeliac disease was found in older children and adolescents, manifesting itself mostly in minor abdominal symptoms, short stature, delayed puberty, anaemia and joint complaints, and in children with diabetes mellitus. Long breast-feeding seemed to postpone the symptoms but the introduction of gluten was of no significance. The low incide

Rubella immunity and morbidity: effects of vaccination in Finland.

The occurrence of rubella antibodies and frequency of virologically proven rubella infections in different age groups were analyzed in a large serum material (about 60,000 sera) collected both before and after the start of nationwide vaccination of children against measles, mumps and rubella in Finland in 1982. The combined live vaccine significantly raised the rubella immunity of children and shifted rubella infections to older ages. In 1986, 91-98% immunity was found in the 2-10-year-old children so far covered by the vaccination programme; no rubella cases were diagnosed in this age group.

Descriptive epidemiology of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in Finland.

In 1974-84 30 patients died with a diagnosis of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) in Finland. Sixteen of the patients were pathologically confirmed and 14 were probable cases; 6 were familial (20%). One further familial patient was alive at the end of 1984. The median age of the 30 patients at death was 59.5 years (range 46-73 years). The familial patients were significantly younger than sporadic cases (median and range 49.5 and 46-57 versus 61.5 and 51-73; P less than 0.01). Only 5 of the 24 sporadic patients were men (male to female ratio 1:3.8). The annual number of new cases as well as the d

The vitamin D intake of children and adolescents in Finland.

The vitamin D intake from diet and supplements was studied in 1768 children and adolescents aged 3, 6, 9, 12, 15 and 18 years in the autumn of 1980. The dietary vitamin D intake increased with increasing age, being lowest in the two youngest groups and highest in the two oldest groups, whereas the use of supplements decreased with increasing age. The total vitamin D intake, including both dietary vitamin D and vitamin D obtained from supplements was highest in the youngest groups and decreased with age. In all groups both the dietary mean vitamin D intake and the mean total intake were well be

Minimum visual requirements in different occupations in Finland.

In Finland the employers can individually fix the minimum visual requirements for their personnel in almost every occupation. In transportation, in police and national defence proper eyesight is regarded so important that strict visual requirements for these have been fixed by the Government. The regulations are often more close when accepting the person to the occupation than later on when working. The minimum requirements are mostly stated for visual acuity, colour perception and visual fields. In some occupations the regulations concern also the refractive error of the eyes and possible eye

Recent trends in breast-feeding in Southern Finland.

A retrospective study on breast-feeding (BF) during 1962-77 has been carried out for the province of Uusimaa. The study was based on 35 815 child health records kept by community health centres. Information was entered in 76% of the records, the percentage improving from 52 to 94 during the study period. The average duration of BF was observed to decline steadily from 2.3 months in 1962 to 1.7 in 1971, increasing thereafter to 3.6 months by the end of the study. A similar pattern of slow decline turning to a sharp rise by 1971 can be seen in the percentage of mothers beginning BF, and various

Microbiological and serological studies of farmers' lung in Finland.

Sera from few Finnish patients with clinical farmers' lung react in precipitin tests with extracts of the thermophilic actinomycetes that commonly cause the disease elsewhere. Hays associated with the disease in Finland showed less evidence of spontaneous heating and contained fewer actinomycete spores than British hays. Only Thermoactinomyces vulgaris was sometimes abundant. Some species of mesophilic fungi were more abundant than in Britain and one, Aspergillus umbrosus, reacted with most sera from farmers' lung patients in precipitin tests. A panel of antigens, including thermophilic actino

Heat Wave-Associated Vibriosis, Sweden and Finland, 2014.

During summer 2014, a total of 89 Vibrio infections were reported in Sweden and Finland, substantially more yearly infections than previously have been reported in northern Europe. Infections were spread across most coastal counties of Sweden and Finland, but unusually, numerous infections were reported in subarctic regions; cases were reported as far north as 65°N, ≈100 miles (160 km) from the Arctic Circle. Most infections were caused by non-O1/O139 V. cholerae (70 cases, corresponding to 77% of the total, all strains were negative for the cholera toxin gene). An extreme heat wave in norther

Acute bacterial, nonnecrotizing cellulitis in Finland: microbiological findings.

BACKGROUND: Bacterial, nonnecrotizing cellulitis is a localized and often recurrent infection of the skin. The aim of this study was to identify the beta-hemolytic streptococci that cause acute nonnecrotizing cellulitis infection in Finland. METHODS: A case-control study of 90 patients hospitalized for acute cellulitis and 90 control subjects was conducted during the period of April 2004-March 2005. Bacterial swab samples were obtained from skin lesions or any abrasion or fissured toe web. Blood culture samples were taken for detection of bacteremia. The patients, their household members, and

Familial subarachnoid hemorrhage in east Finland, 1977-1990.

The familial occurrence of cerebral aneurysms in a defined clinical group of 1150 patients from a defined catchment area was studied. Two or more proven aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) patients within the same family were included. Of these 1150 patients, 113 (10%) had a proven familial occurrence of aneurysmal SAH. These 113 patients form 91 SAH families with a total of 203 aneurysm patients. Fifty-four percent of the patients were female, and the mean age in female patients was 49 years and in male patients was 44 years. In 23% of the families, three or more members were identified

Acute Perinatal Stroke Characteristics and Outcome in Southern Finland.

AIM: Perinatal stroke can cause lifelong morbidities. Outcome prediction is important for parental guidance and follow-up. We studied characteristics of acute perinatal stroke in a Finnish cohort. METHODS: We performed a population-based study, identifying infants with acute neonatal cerebral ischemia or sinovenous thrombosis (CSVT) in Southern Finland from 2010 to 2023. We analysed the incidence of stroke types, seizures, anti-seizure medication use, and outcomes. RESULTS: Altogether 88 infants (1 in 3101 live births) were diagnosed with acute perinatal stroke: 67% with arterial ischemic st

Mortality From Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis in Finland 1987-2022.

BACKGROUND: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal neurodegenerative disease. We assessed changes in the mortality from ALS in Finland from 1987 to 2022. METHODS: Numbers of deaths caused by ALS (ICD-10 code G12.2) and population sizes by sex, age group, and year were obtained from Statistics Finland. Crude and age-standardized mortality rates were calculated. The annual percentage change was estimated using Poisson regression, and joinpoint regression was used to identify changes in trend during the study period. RESULTS: Mortality from ALS increased in Finland from 1987 to 2022. Th

Lung cancer screening in Finland: a prospective randomized trial.

BACKGROUND: Early detection of lung cancer with low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) screening can shift diagnoses to early-stage disease and improve survival. However, LDCT has several challenges such as high false positive rate and indefinite cost-effectiveness. We report here secondary and exploratory endpoints of the Low-dose CT screening for lung cancer combined with different smoking cessation approach in Finland (LDCT-SC-FI) study including recruitment channels, LDCT performance, and long-term smoking cessation. METHODS: In this study, we randomized 200 current smokers with a significan

Costs of oropharyngeal squamous cell cancer treatment in Finland.

BACKGROUND: Oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC) can be treated with definitive (chemo)radiotherapy ((C)RT) or primary surgical treatment (PST) with or without postoperative oncologic treatment. The prognosis of OPSCC does not essentially depend on the treatment modality, which allows to consider secondary decision-making aspects such as treatment costs when recommending an individual treatment modality. We attempted to analyze the costs associated with definitive (C)RT and PST in the treatment of OPSCC in Finland. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We included 73 patients diagnosed with OPSCC a
