Intestinal parasitic infections caused by helminths are globally distributed and are a major cause of morbidity worldwide. Parasites may modulate the virulence, gut microbiota diversity and host responses during infection. Despite numerous works, little is known about the complex interaction between parasites and the gut microbiota. In the present study, the complex interplay between parasites and the gut microbiota was investigated. A total of 12 bacterial strains across four major families, including Enterobacteriaceae, Morganellaceae, Flavobacteriaceae, and Pseudomonadaceae, were isolated f

Epiphytes on seagrass leaves can render parts of the leaf phyllosphere anoxic in darkness owing to leaf/epiphyte respiration and O2 diffusion constraints. In such anoxic microenvironments, anaerobic microbes can potentially produce phytotoxins and greenhouse gases, but the actual occurrence of such processes in seagrass epiphytic biofilms remain uncertain. We used microsensors to measure O2, NO, N2O and H2S concentration gradients, as well as NO and O2 dynamics within epiphytic biofilms on seagrass (Zostera marina) leaves under changing environmental conditions. The bacterial community composi

BACKGROUND: Capnocytophaga canimorsus, a Gram-negative rod, belongs to the Flavobacteriaceae family and colonizes the oropharynx of dogs and cats. Infections with C. canimorsus are rare and can induce a systemic infection with a severe course of the disease. So far, only five case reports of C. canimorsus infections associated with Waterhouse-Friderichsen Syndrome (WFS) have been reported with only two of the patients having a history of splenectomy.
CASE PRESENTATION: Here, we report a fatal case of WFS due to C. canimorsus bacteremia and mycetal superinfection in a 61-year-old female asplen

A strategy for vaccine design involves identifying proteins that could be involved in pathogen-host interactions. The aim of this proteomic study was to determine how iron limitation affects the protein expression of Tenacibaculum dicentrarchi, with a primary focus on virulence factors and proteins associated with iron uptake. The proteomic analysis was carried out using two strains of T. dicentrarchi grown under normal (control) and iron-limited conditions, mimicking the host environment. Our findings revealed differences in the proteins expressed by the type strain CECT 7612T and the Chilean

Bacteria belonging to the genus Capnocytophaga are thin, capnophilic, Gram-negative bacilli with tapered ends that include nine species that are isolated from the mouth of humans and animals and, from a phylogenetical perspective, they belong to the family Flavobacteriaceae. Two more species, namely C. endodontalis and C. stomatis have been recovered from a periapical abscess and human and animal infections, respectively. Capnocytophaga spp. can cause serious and potentially life-threatening infections in humans, such as bacteremia and meningitis, most commonly in the context of penetrating tr

OBJECTIVES: The oral cavity harbors a plethora of bacterial species. Dysbiosis of oral and gut microbiota is associated with several oral and systemic pathologies, such as cancer, obesity, diabetes, atherosclerosis and gastrointestinal diseases. Imbalance in the oral-gut microbial axis has been associated with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). This study aims to analyze the bacterial profile of HNSCC across various taxonomic units, investigate molecular patterns associated with prevalent bacterial phylum in HNSCC, and compare the bacterial profile in HNSCC and gastrointestinal (GI

The abundant and diverse microorganisms that inhabit aquatic systems are both determinants and indicators of aquatic health, providing essential ecosystem services such as nutrient cycling but also causing harmful blooms and disease in impacted habitats. Estuaries are among the most urbanized coastal ecosystems and as a consequence experience substantial environmental pressures, providing ideal systems to study the influence of anthropogenic inputs on microbial ecology. Here we use the highly urbanized Sydney Harbor, Australia, as a model system to investigate shifts in microbial community com

Elizabethkingia anophelis, recently discovered from mosquito gut, is an emerging bacterium associated with neonatal meningitis and nosocomial outbreaks. However, its transmission route remains unknown. We use rapid genome sequencing to investigate 3 cases of E. anophelis sepsis involving 2 neonates who had meningitis and 1 neonate's mother who had chorioamnionitis. Comparative genomics revealed evidence for perinatal vertical transmission from a mother to her neonate; the 2 isolates from these patients, HKU37 and HKU38, shared essentially identical genome sequences. In contrast, the strain fro

UNLABELLED: Riemerella anatipestifer (RA) is a major pathogen in waterfowl, responsible for severe septicemia and serositis, leading to significant economic losses. As antibiotic resistance becomes more widespread, there is an urgent need for effective, novel vaccine strategies. In this study, we engineered three recombinant RA antigens, PorQ, YaeT, and YiaD, onto the surface of outer membrane vesicles (OMVs) derived from a Salmonella Typhimurium mutant strain using the lipoprotein signal peptide (Lpp). The engineered OMVs were shown to induce robust humoral and cellular immune responses in du

BACKGROUND: Chryseobacterium indologenes is an opportunistic, multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacillus increasingly recognized as a cause of hospital-acquired infections, particularly in immunocompromised patients. Although rare, its intrinsic resistance to beta-lactams and its ability to colonize medical devices pose significant therapeutic challenges.
CASE PRESENTATION: We describe a case of C. indologenes hospital-acquired pneumonia in a 43-year-old HIV-positive patient with multiple comorbidities, including Kaposi sarcoma, diabetes mellitus, and chronic kidney disease requiring hemodial

Columnaris-causing bacteria (CCB) represent a group of four Flavobacterium species, previously classified under Flavobacterium columnaris, causing a threatening condition in salmonid farming characterised by cutaneous and gill lesions, commonly referred to as 'saddleback disease'. A peracute skin disease outbreak with high mortality in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) farms in Northern Italy was investigated. The disease presented with skin discoloration and scale lifting without internal organ abnormalities, leading to a weekly cumulative mortality of up to 80%. The disease was successfull

INTRODUCTION: Myroides is a bacterial genus of opportunistic bacteria responsible for diverse infections including in the skin and soft tissues, urinary tract, cardiovascular system, and bacteremia, although the incidence of its reported infections is low, it is increasing, likely due the use of better bacterial identification methods, but also perhaps due an increase in its prevalence. In addition, their pathogenic role is limited in terms of reporting their microbial physiology, so the present work provides information in this regard in addition to the information that is available in the in

Flavobacterium is a genus of microorganisms living in a variety of hosts and habitats across the globe. Some species are found in fish organs, and only a few, such as Flavobacterium psychrophilum and Flavobacterium columnare, cause severe disease and losses in fish farms. The evolution of flavobacteria that are pathogenic to fish is unknown, and the protein changes accountable for the selection of their colonization to fish have yet to be determined. A phylogenetic tree was constructed with the complete genomic sequences of 208 species of the Flavobacterium genus using 861 softcore genes. This

Chryseobacterium (formerly Flavobacterium) indologenes, is a non-fermentative gram-negative bacillus which is widely found in the nature, primarily soil and water. Since it can survive in chlorine-treated municipal water supplies, and can colonize the sink basins and tap waters of the hospitals, this bacterium may be a potential infectious agent. Contamination of the medical devices containing water (respirators, intubation tubes, humidifiers, incubators for newborns, etc.) in hospital settings may lead to serious infections especially in patients with predisposing diseases, newborns and immun

Elizabethkingia anophelis 12012-2 PRCM was isolated from a patient with multiple organ dysfunction syndrome and lower respiratory tract infection in China. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) analysis demonstrated that it was resistant to 20 antibiotics including trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole and ciprofloxacin, which were effective for the elimination of other Elizabethkingia infections. To investigate multidrug resistance and pathogenicity mechanisms, we analyzed genome features of 12012-2 PRCM and compared them to the other Elizabethkingia species. The draft genome size was 4.02 Mb with a

Columnaris is an important bacterial disease of freshwater fish and is increasingly recognised as being caused by a species complex historically referred to as Flavobacterium columnare. A two-step molecular workflow was applied to ornamental fish with clinical signs of columnaris disease from a multispecies commercial distributor operating a shared recirculating system in São Paulo, Brazil. Skin and fin lesion scrapings were Gram stained, and lesion-derived tissue DNA was screened by ISR-PCR for the columnaris disease complex. ISR-PCR yielded the expected amplicon in 61/123 samples (49.6%) fro
