Metabolic Impact of Flavonoids Consumption in Obesity: From Central to Peripheral.

The prevention and treatment of obesity is primary based on the follow-up of a healthy lifestyle, which includes a healthy diet with an important presence of bioactive compounds such as polyphenols. For many years, the health benefits of polyphenols have been attributed to their anti-oxidant capacity as free radical scavengers. More recently it has been described that polyphenols activate other cell-signaling pathways that are not related to ROS production but rather involved in metabolic regulation. In this review, we have summarized the current knowledge in this field by focusing on the meta

Maternal Flavonoids Intake Reverts Depression-Like Behaviour in Rat Female Offspring.

Maternal hypercaloric exposure during pregnancy and lactation is a risk factor for developing diseases associated with inflammation such as obesity, diabetes and, neurological diseases in the offspring. Neuroinflammation might modulate neuronal activation and flavonoids are dietary compounds that have been proven to exert anti-inflammatory properties. Thus, the aim of the present study is to evaluate the effect of maternal supplementation with flavonoids (kaempferol-3-O-glucoside and narirutin) on the prevention of depression-like behaviour in the female offspring of dams fed with an obesogeni

Isolation of tyrosinase and melanogenesis inhibitory flavonoids from Juniperus chinensis fruits.

A new biflavonoid, amentoflavone-7-O-β-D-glucoside, and thirteen known flavonoids were isolated from the fruits of Juniperus chinensis using a bioactivity-guided method and their tyrosinase inhibitory effects were tested using a mushroom tyrosinase bioassay. Two isolates, hypolaetin-7-O-β-D-glucoside and quercetin-7-O-α-L-rhamnoside, were found to reduce tyrosinase activity at a concentration of 50 μM. Quercetin-7-O-α-L-rhamnoside attenuated cellular tyrosinase activity and melanogenesis in α-MSH plus IBMX-stimulated B16F10 melanoma cells. Molecular docking simulation revealed that quercetin-7

Flavonoids as therapeutic compounds targeting key proteins involved in Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's disease is characterized by pathological aggregation of protein tau and amyloid-β peptides, both of which are considered to be toxic to neurons. Naturally occurring dietary flavonoids have received considerable attention as alternative candidates for Alzheimer's therapy taking into account their antiamyloidogenic, antioxidative, and anti-inflammatory properties. Experimental evidence supports the hypothesis that certain flavonoids may protect against Alzheimer's disease in part by interfering with the generation and assembly of amyloid-β peptides into neurotoxic oligomeric aggregat

Flavonoids and ovarian cancer risk: A case-control study in Italy.

Flavonoids belong to a vast group of polyphenols widely distributed in all foods of plant origin. Because of their antioxidant, antimutagenic and antiproliferative properties, they have been hypothesized to contribute to the favorable effects of fruit and vegetables against cancer. The aim of this study is to investigate the relation of 6 classes of flavonoids (flavan-3-ols, flavanones, flavonols, flavones, anthocyanidins and isoflavones) with ovarian cancer risk, using data from a multicentric case-control study conducted in Italy between 1992 and 1999. The study included 1,031 cases with inc

Role of flavonoids in controlling the phototoxicity of Hypericum perforatum extracts.

Hypericum perforatum extracts are used mainly as oral antidepressants. Depending on source the extracts contain various amounts of phenylpropanes, flavonol derivates, biflavones, proathocyanidines, xanthones, phloroglucinoles, some amino acids, naphtodianthrones (hypericines) and essential oil constituents. The therapeutic use of Hypericum perforatum extracts however is limited by their phototoxic potential. It was the aim of the present study to investigate the phototoxic potential of 3 Hypericum perforatum extracts from different sources as well as some of its main constituents. In order to

Flavonoids extracted from fonio millet (Digitaria exilis) reveal potent antithyroid properties.

Digitaria exilis (fonio) is a tiny variety of millet commonly eaten by inhabitants of semiarid regions. A sample of fonio collected right in the middle of a severely iodine-depleted goitrous endemic was submitted to phytochemical investigations in order to assess the potential contributory roles played by vegetable molecules to the goitrogenic processes. The total content of flavonoids amounts to 500 mg/kg of the edible whole cereal grains. Their extraction and identification fail to detect the C-glycosylflavones described in other millet varieties but point out the presence of apigenin (A = 1
