Parabolic flight as a spaceflight analog.

Ground-based analog facilities have had wide use in mimicking some of the features of spaceflight in a more-controlled and less-expensive manner. One such analog is parabolic flight, in which an aircraft flies repeated parabolic trajectories that provide short-duration periods of free fall (0 g) alternating with high-g pullout or recovery phases. Parabolic flight is unique in being able to provide true 0 g in a ground-based facility. Accordingly, it lends itself well to the investigation of specific areas of human spaceflight that can benefit from this capability, which predominantly includes

Effects of spaceflight on rat peripheral blood leukocytes and bone marrow progenitor cells.

The white blood cell (WBC) elements and the bone marrow myeloid progenitor cell populations were analyzed to ascertain adaptation to micro-gravity and subsequent readaptation to 1 G in rats flown on the 14-day Spacelab Life Sciences-2 (SLS-2) mission. Bone marrow cells were harvested from one group of rats killed inflight (FD13) and blood was drawn from three other groups at various times. The WBC level was normal on FD14 with the exception of neutrophilia. On FD13, numbers of colony-forming units-granulocyte (CFU-G), CFU-GM, and CFU-M from flight animals were decreased compared with ground co

Trabecular bone remodeling after seven days of weightlessness exposure (BIOCOSMOS 1667).

Seven male rats were exposed to 7 days of weightlessness in the Soviet mission COSMOS 1667 and compared with seven control rats by bone histomorphometric methods. In proximal tibial metaphysis, the trabecular bone volume was markedly reduced in flight animals. Trabeculae were decreased in number and thickness; this probably leads to alteration of bone mechanical properties. Formation activity (reflected by measurements of osteoid seams) was decreased at trabecular and endosteal levels. Resorption activity (estimated by count of osteoclast number and active resorption surfaces using a histoenzy

Investigating woodpecker drumming using the center of percussion.

Woodpeckers are known for their distinctive drumming behavior used to forage for food and attract mates. During drumming, woodpeckers endure decelerations up to 1200 g without developing apparent brain injuries. Because of this extraordinary capability, woodpecker anatomy has served as an inspiration for structures that reduce forces during impacts, with potential applications in helmet design and vehicle safety. Previous studies theorized that impact energy from drumming is primarily absorbed by anatomical features in the woodpecker's head such as the tongue, hyoid bone, spongy bone, or lower

Flexible Morphing Aerial Robot with Inflatable Structure for Perching-Based Human-Robot Interaction.

In nature, birds perch to rest and to survey their predators and prey. In human-managed contexts, perching also facilitates interaction with humans such as falconry. Recently, researchers have developed perching-capable aerial robots as a way to save energy, and deformable structures demonstrate significant advantages in efficiency of perching and compactness of configuration. However, ensuring flight stability remains challenging for deformable aerial robots due to the difficulty of controlling flexible arms. Furthermore, perching for human interaction requires high compliance along with safe

Flexible circuits for visually guided flight control in Drosophila.

Flight maneuvers in the fruit fly Drosophila have long served as a model for studying principles underlying visual information processing. Advances in genetic targeting of individual types of neurons for manipulation and recording, as well as the publication of the complete connectome, have greatly expanded our knowledge of how behavior is controlled by the fly's nervous system. In this review, I summarize recent findings on how visual information relevant to flight is transformed into a behavioral output, ranging from fast stabilizing reflex-like responses to longer-lasting goal-directed beha

Neuroethology: Seeing to steer in flies.

Blowfly motion vision is tuned not simply to represent optic flow, but to support rapid flight control. A recent study shows that blowfly visual neurons preferentially encode the self-motion signals most useful for stabilisation, revealing an embodied principle of sensory coding.

Echolocating bats sacrifice binaural localization cues for target-focused hearing during high-speed foraging.

Accurate sound localization is critical to navigation and foraging in echolocating animals. During both passive listening and active echolocation, bats are thought to rely solely on interaural level differences (ILDs) between the two ears, attaining very large ILDs by orienting their outer ears apart. However, detecting weak prey echoes during high-speed foraging should instead favor target-focused pinnae that maximize sonar range and reduce clutter interference. Therefore, we propose that flying bats orient their pinnae toward prey. We test this hypothesis using a unique wind tunnel and by em

Flight capacity of adult Chrysomya megacephala (Fabricius, 1794) (Diptera: Calliphoridae) in relation to gender and day-age.

Chrysomya megacephala (Fabricius, 1794), also known as the oriental latrine fly, is a synanthropic blow fly of medical importance worldwide. Understanding the flight capacity of C. megacephala adults with different day-ages and genders provides a scientific basis for understanding its distribution and potentially effective control. In this study, we used a flight mill to conduct continuous 24-h tethered-flight experiments using unmated male and female adults of C. megacephala at day-ages 1, 5, 9, 13, 17, 21, 25, 29, and 33 under controlled conditions of 25 °C, relative humidity 40%, and light

First direct quantification of floral handling costs in bees.

Floral handling can be energetically costly for bees, yet these costs are rarely measured. We provide the first direct quantification of the metabolic cost of floral buzzing in bumblebees and evaluate its ecological significance. Using flow-through respirometry synchronized with laser vibrometry, we measured carbon dioxide production during floral buzzing by Bombus terrestris and compared it with flight take-off, which is powered by the same thoracic muscles. Floral buzzing required high muscular effort compared with other behaviours, with approximately 0.10 J per event and mass-specific power

Increasing temperatures affect thoracic muscle performance in Arctic bumblebees.

Increasing temperature beyond a species' optimum is a major threat to insect biodiversity, particularly in rapidly warming regions such as the Arctic. For cold-adapted pollinators, high temperatures can disrupt physiology and ecosystem services, threatening pollinator populations and plant reproduction. In bumblebees, increased temperature disrupts the physiology of the indirect flight muscles. However, these muscles, which generate the bee's charismatic buzz, also facilitate key non-flight behaviours including communication, defence, and buzz-pollination, where temperature effects remain unex

The fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster remains a promising model organism for research in space biology.

Exploring deep space and creation of bases on other bodies in the Solar System requires increased spaceflight duration and prolonged exposure to different gravity conditions. Most physiological changes under these conditions occur at the cellular level, but the long-term consequences of such effects remain unexplored. The structural and functional characteristics of cells are similar across animal species, but research into issues related to aging and lifespan, development and the reproductive system, the transgenerational inheritance of information about environmental factors is more convenie

Bats that walk: a new evolutionary hypothesis for the terrestrial behaviour of New Zealand's endemic mystacinids.

BACKGROUND: New Zealand's lesser short-tailed bat Mystacina tuberculata is one of only two of c.1100 extant bat species to use a true walking gait when manoeuvring on the ground (the other being the American common vampire bat Desmodus rotundus). Mystacina tuberculata is also the last surviving member of Mystacinidae, the only mammalian family endemic to New Zealand (NZ) and a member of the Gondwanan bat superfamily Noctilionoidea. The capacity for true quadrupedal terrestrial locomotion in Mystacina is a secondarily derived condition, reflected in numerous skeletal and muscular specialization

Navigational abilities of homing pigeons deprived of olfactory or trigeminally mediated magnetic information when young.

Anatomical evidence and conditioning experiments have recently suggested that magnetoreceptors are located in the upper beak of homing pigeons, where they are innervated by the ophthalmic branch of the trigeminal nerve. These findings have raised the issue of whether the trigeminally mediated magnetoreception is involved in the navigational mechanisms of homing pigeons. Recent data have shown that, in inexperienced pigeons, section of the ophthalmic branch of the trigeminal nerve does not impair navigational abilities, whereas the navigational performance of inexperienced pigeons is disrupted

Leaping out of the water: Aerial-aquatic locomotion with flapping wings.

Wing-propelled diving birds flap their wings to move through air and water, yet the wing morphology and kinematics that enable this behavior remain poorly understood because of the difficulty of collecting in situ data. The impact of flapping frequency, wing size, and stiffness on locomotion in-and transition between-the two media are still unknown. We compared data from diving birds against experiments using a flapping-wing robot capable of flying, swimming, plunge diving, and exiting the water. We show that frequency adaptation, flexible wings, and powerful actuation enable seamless transiti

Bumblebee thermoregulation at increasing temperatures is affected by behavioral state.

Over the past decades, increasing environmental temperatures have been identified as one of the causes of major insect population declines and biodiversity loss. However, it is unclear how these rising temperatures affect endoheterothermic insects, like bumblebees, that have evolved thermoregulatory capacities to exploit cold and temperate habitats. To investigate this, we measured head, thoracic, and abdominal temperature of bumblebee (Bombus terrestris) workers across a range of temperatures (24 °C-32 °C) during three distinct behaviors. In resting bumblebees, the head, abdomen, and thorax c

An insect-inspired asymmetric hinge in a double-layer membrane.

Insect wings are deformable airfoils, in which deformations are mostly achieved by complicated interactions between their structural components. Due to the complexity of the wing design and technical challenges associated with testing the delicate wings, we know little about the properties of their components and how they determine wing response to flight forces. Here, we report an unusual structure from the hind-wing membrane of the beetle Pachnoda marginata. The structure, a transverse section of the claval flexion line, consists of two distinguishable layers: a bell-shaped upper layer and a

In vivo length oscillations of indirect flight muscles in the fruit fly Drosophila virilis.

We have used high-speed video microscopy to measure in vivo length oscillations of the indirect flight muscles of the fruit fly Drosophila virilis during tethered flight. The changes in muscle strain were measured by tracking the deformation of the thoracic exoskeleton at the origin and insertion of both the dorsal longitudinal (DLM) and the dorsal ventral (DVM) muscles. The mean peak-to-peak strain amplitudes were found to be 3.5% for the DLMs and 3.3% for the DVMs, although the strain amplitude within individual cycles ranged from 2 to 5%. These values are consistent with the small number of

Measurement of flight tone differences between female Aedes aegypti and A. albopictus (Diptera: Culicidae).

Mosquito flight tone was amplified and digitally sampled at 20,000 samples per second (Hz). Resampling of the resulting sound files at 1,000, 5,000, and 10,000 Hz allowed comparison of flight tone frequency distributions for males and females of Aedes aegypti (L.) and A. albopictus (Skuse). Frequency distributions for females of the two species did not overlap at sampling rates of 5,000 Hz or higher, whereas considerable overlap was observed at the 1,000 Hz sampling rate. Males of the two species produced flight tones higher in frequency than those of females, but similar to each other. At the
