Papaya (Carica papaya) is a trioecious species with female, male, and hermaphrodite plants. Given the sex segregation, selecting hermaphroditic plants is vital for orchard establishment due to their greater commercial value. However, selecting hermaphrodite plants through sexing is laborious and costly. Moreover, environmental stressors can exacerbate the issue by potentially inducing abnormal flower development, thus affecting fruit quality. Despite these challenges, the molecular mechanisms governing sex development in papaya remain poorly understood. Thus, this study aimed to identify prote

BACKGROUND: Chikungunya fever is an endemic disease caused by the Chikungunya virus (CHIKV). To date there is no antiviral treatment against this infection or licensed vaccine to prevent it. Our study aims to evaluate whether (-)-cassine (1) and (-)-spectaline (2), the main alkaloids of Senna spectabilis, display anti-CHIKV activity. Both compounds have been described to be biologically active against neglected tropical diseases, including malaria, leishmaniasis, and schistosomiasis, which emphasizes that these molecules could be repurposed for chikungunya fever treatment.

The volatile oils obtained from the leaves and flowers of the Croatian endemic plant Centaurea ragusina L. were evaluated for antimicrobial activity. The chemical compositions, determined by GC and GC-MS, were complex, with sesquiterpenes the most abundant class of compound. Nonterpene hydrocarbons were also identified in high quantities, while acids and ketones were found in high quantities only in the leaf volatile oil. Aldehydes, alcohols, esters and other compounds were identified in lower quantities. Antimicrobial effects of the volatile samples were investigated by using the disc diffusi

Supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) was compared with Soxhlet extraction, steam distillation and maceration for the isolation of the active components present in chamomile flowerheads. The obtained fractions were analysed by GC-MS and reversed-phase HPLC. The yield of essential oil achieved by a 30-min extraction with pure CO2 at 90 atm and 40 degrees C was 4.4 times higher than that produced by steam distillation performed for 4 h. The recovery of the flavonoid apigenin obtained by supercritical CO2 after a 30-min extraction at 200 atm and 40 degrees C was 71.4% compared to Soxhlet extractio

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Floral mimicry is a form of deceptive pollination in which flowers or inflorescences imitate specific resources relevant to potential flower visitors, such as food, brood sites, or mating partners (sexual mimicry). A plant genus containing many unstudied species with potentially highly diverse deceptive systems is fly-pollinated Aristolochia (Aristolochiaceae), famous for its trap flowers. A few species with strongly male-biased pollinator assemblages have been suggested to mimic the female sex pheromones of flies. However, so far, neither the floral scents nor the female

Environmental DNA (eDNA) analysis has revolutionized our ability to study plant-arthropod interaction diversity. However, the method has one main limitation: while it accurately recovers the presence of individual species, it has limited quantitative recording capabilities. Recent work suggests that this problem can be overcome by processing replicate eDNA samples at individual sites. The naive occupancy of a species within a replicate sample approximates its relative abundance or its interaction strength with the sampled matrix. However, this approach will lead to a significant increase in th

Elderberry (Sambucus nigra L.) and linden (Tilia cordata Mill.) flower extracts are known for their pro-healthy properties. Various extraction methods, both conventional (Soxhlet) and advanced (ultrasound assisted extraction, UAE, accelerated solvent extraction, ASE, and matrix solid phase dispersion, MSPD), were applied to obtain ethanol-water extracts from the plants. The biological profiles, the total polyphenol content (TPC) and total flavonoid content (TFC) in the extracts were determined spectrophotometrically. Almost 40 compounds were identified in extracts by means of HPLC-MS/MS. The c

Flowers of Inula japonica Thunb., a rich source of sesquiterpenoids, have long been used in traditional medicine to improve inflammatory conditions. To explore previously unreported anti-inflammatory sesquiterpenoids, isolation and structural elucidation were performed on this plant material, yielding 18 compounds (1-18), including 6 previously undescribed sesquiterpenoids (1-3 and 6-8). The structures of these compounds, including their absolute configurations, were assigned based on one- and two-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance experiments, high-resolution electrospray ionization mass

This study introduces a High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC)-based method for assessing α-amylase activity and inhibition. The method was designed as an alternative to the conventional 3,5-dinitrosalicylic acid (DNS) assay, which reports only total inhibition and lacks information on specific hydrolysis products. Starch hydrolysis was examined using α-amylase from porcine pancreas, human saliva, and Aspergillus oryzae. Coupling HPTLC with mass spectrometry enabled the identification of six products formed during enzymatic breakdown. For validation, three key markers of activity (

Identifying effective biomarkers has long been a persistent need for early diagnosis and targeted therapy of disease. While mass spectrometry-based label-free proteomics with trace cell has been demonstrated, deep proteomics with ultratrace human biofluid remains challenging due to low protein concentration, extremely limited patient sample volume, and substantial protein contact losses during preprocessing. Herein, we proposed and validated lanthanide metal-organic framework flowers (MOF-flowers), as effective materials, to trap and enrich protein in biofluid jointly through cation-π interact

This report investigates the preparation, characterization, and application of activated carbon derived from Spathodea campanulata flowers (SCAC) to remove Congo Red (CR) dye from aqueous streams. SCAC was synthesized using orthophosphoric acid activation which yielded a mesoporous material with a specific surface area of (986.41 m2/g), significantly exceeding values reported for flower-derived activated carbons in the available literature. Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) image revealed an irregular, rough surface morphology pre-adsorption, which became smoother post-adsorp

The Senna genus has a wide diversity of species, with an interesting chemical composition of secondary metabolites and applications as medicine. The folk medicine, mainly in developing countries, uses species of Senna to treat seizures, epilepsy and constipation. Though the recognized bioactivity, some Brazilian native species of Senna remain unexplored, such as Senna cearensis, a native species of Caatinga. This is the first report about the bioactivity of the flowers of S. cearensis Afr. Fern., a native species of northeast Brazil. In this communication, flavonoids and catechins are identifi
