Posttransplant epidermoid cysts secondary to small graft hair transplantation.

BACKGROUND: Epidermoid cysts sometimes result from small-graft hair transplantation. Although hair transplant surgeons are aware of this complication, it has not been reported to date. OBJECTIVE: Our purpose is to report the clinical and histological features of posttransplant epidermoid cysts. METHODS: Four patients with posttransplant cysts, and the histological features of two of these cysts, were reviewed. RESULTS: All cysts occurred at the site of a recent micro- or minigraft, and were small; one had become infected. Serial sectioning of one scalp biopsy showed a micrograft lying in th

Variants of the adenomatoid odontogenic tumor with a note on tumor origin.

Three rare variants of the adenomatoid odontogenic tumor (AOT) are described. A follicular AOT associated with an impacted and displaced 28, an extra-follicular variant mimicking a radicular cyst around the apex of 23 and a peripheral (epulis-like) variant exhibiting a periodontal bone defect palatal to 21. On reappraisal of the origin and pathogenesis of the AOT, it would seem that this tumor or hamartomatous lesion is derived from odontogenic epithelium of the dental lamina complex or its remnants.

Laparoscopic detorsion of twisted ovary.

An 18-year-old female presented with a 6-day history of lower abdominal pain. Transabdominal ultrasonography revealed a right adnexal cyst measuring 9 cm. Laparoscopic examination demonstrated a 10-cm right paratubal cyst and a 5-cm right ovarian torsion with gangrenous discoloration. After removal of the right paratubal cyst, untwisting of the right ovary was performed. The postoperative period was uneventful. During follow-up, ultrasonography revealed restoration of right ovarian size with follicular growth. Arterial and venous blood flows were seen on Doppler examination. The right ovary ap

[Schopf-Schulz-Passarge syndrome: 2 cases].

BACKGROUND: Schöpf-Schulz-Passarge's syndrome is a rare autosomal recessive genodermatosis associating hypodontia, palmoplantar keratoderma, cysts of the eyelid margins, onychodysplasia and hypotrichosis. We report two new cases. CASE REPORT: Case no. 1: A 49 year-old woman complained of erosive and fissured palmoplantar keratoderma. Nails were fragile and dystrophic. Permanent teeth were absent. She also had many small cysts of the eyelid margins and a middle hypotrichosis. There was no consanguinity between her parents. Case no. 2: A 56 year-old man was seen for red, scaly and well marked p

Gaint epidermoid cyst of external ear- a rare case report.

Epidermoid cysts are developmental, benign, cutaneous cysts which are commonly found on face followed by trunk and neck. They account for approximately 80% of follicular cysts of the skin. They are slow growing lesions and remain asymptomatic until or unless secondarily infected. They occasionally have tendency to develop into a malignancy. We describe a case of giant epidermoid cyst of posterior part of external ear, a location where very few cases have been reported in the literature. Since cyst was attached to the external ear, esthetics was also one of the important concern apart from the

Trichilemmal cyst of the third fingertip: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Trichilemmal cysts (TCs) are common skin lesions that occur in hairy areas. A TC involving a fingertip has not been previously described in the literature. We herein report a case of a TC occupying a fingertip region. CASE PRESENTATION: A 43-year-old woman presented with a 1.5 × 1.5 cm nodular lesion on the third fingertip. The lesion was completely excised, and histopathological examination revealed a TC. CONCLUSION: TCs may involve atypical locations, such as fingertips, where there are no hair follicles. After surgical excision, a careful histopathological examination should

[Proliferating trichilemmal tumor of the pulp of a finger: case report and review of the literature].

Trichilemmal cyst is a benign tumor, developed from hair follicle, located mainly at the scalp. We report a clinical case of unusual location at the finger pulp confirmed by histology. The main differential diagnosis in this reported case was a whitlow. The origin of this cyst is probably the nail matrix whose keratinization is trichilemmal. Surgical excision biopsy allowed a good clinical outcome.

Single-incision pediatric endosurgery for ovarian pathology.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Despite being pioneered by gynecologists, single-incision endosurgery has not been widely reported for the treatment of ovarian and adnexal pathology in neonates, children, and adolescents. We describe our initial experience using single-incision pediatric endosurgery (SIPES) for these indications and discuss advantages and drawbacks. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: All children who underwent SIPES with a preoperative diagnosis of ovarian or adnexal pathology were included in the study. Data on age, operative time, complications, length of hospital stay, and outcomes were col

Bilateral Nonsyndromic Cystic Lesions Involving Impacted Teeth: Nomenclature and Diagnostic Protocol.

AIM: To present a brief overview of etiopathogenesis, nomenclature, and treatment modality for a case of nonsyndromic bilateral cysts in the mandible. BACKGROUND: Odontogenic cysts, though comprise a distinct group of lesions have on and off posed challenges in etiopathogenesis and nomenclature. The prima facia role of development/inflammation in the buildup of fluid between the reduced enamel epithelium attached at the cementoenamel junction and the enamel in the pathogenesis of dentigerous cysts has long been discussed. Along with this, the spread of inflammatory exudate from an overlying p

Maxillary dentigerous cyst and supernumerary tooth. Is it a frequent association?

UNLABELLED: Dentigerous cysts, also known as follicular cysts, are a relatively common pathology in our field. They are associated with unerupted or semi-erupted teeth and are usually not related to supernumerary teeth. OBJECTIVE: To describe a dentigerous cyst case associated to a supernumerary tooth. CASE-REPORT: A large-sized dentigerous cyst is described, associated with a supernumerary tooth, affecting the whole maxillary anterior area. Appropriate treatment consists of performing root canals and a Partsch II procedure with a cystectomy, extracting the unerupted teeth, carrying out an a

A comparison of hormone levels in follicle-lutein-cysts and in normal bovine ovarian follicles.

Insulin-like growth factors 1 and 2 (IGF-1 and 2), oxytocin, progesterone, estradiol and ubiquitin were measured in bovine follicle-lutein-cysts and in follicular fluid after the classification of ovarian follicles by size (Class I = <4 mm; Class II = 5-8 mm; Class III = 9-12 mm; Class IV = preovulatory; Class V = cystic). It was found that IGF-1 concentrations increased during growth from 280 ng/ml in small follicles to 489 ng/ml in preovulatory follicles; IGF-2 appeared to remain constant in follicular fluid and in cysts (275 ng/ml). Oxytocin values were low in Class I, II and III follicles

Intraovarian excess of nerve growth factor increases androgen secretion and disrupts estrous cyclicity in the rat.

A single injection of estradiol valerate induces a form of cystic ovary resembling some aspects of the human polycystic ovarian syndrome. Preceding the development of follicular cysts, there is an increase in intraovarian synthesis of nerve growth factor (NGF) and the low affinity NGF receptor (p75 NGFR). Selective blockade of NGF actions and p75 NGFR synthesis in the ovary restored estrous cyclicity and ovulatory capacity in estradiol valerate-treated rats, suggesting that an increase in NGF-dependent, p75 NGFR-mediated actions within the ovary contributes to the development of cystic ovarian

Giant epidermal inclusion cyst of the thyroid: a rare occurrence.

Epidermal inclusion cyst (EIC) of the thyroid is extremely rare in the clinical practice. A handful of cases have been documented in the past in the world literature. A giant EIC of the thyroid is hitherto unreported. This lesion may arise from the squamous metaplasia of the thyroid follicular cells. Though non-neoplastic, giant forms can cause compression of the vital structures of the neck. In the present case, we have described a giant epidermal inclusion cyst successfully managed with surgical management.

An intra-thyroidal branchial cyst: a case report.

Branchial cleft cysts were previously thought not to occur in the thyroid but have recently been described in two patients with Hashimoto's disease. This case report describes a patient with a branchial cleft cyst in an otherwise normal thyroid gland and could provide further evidence that thyroidal follicular cells are derived from the branchial clefts as well as from the primitive gut.

Cutaneous keratocysts of nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome.

Four cysts were removed from two unrelated patients with nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome. Multiple sections from each cyst were studied. Two cysts showed histologic features similar to keratocysts that occur in the jaws of patients with this syndrome. The cysts were lined by a festooned epithelium consisting of two to five layers of squamous cells that formed keratin without the presence of a granular cell layer. One cyst contained some lanugo hair and a small bud of follicular epithelium. This cyst was therefore similar to cutaneous steatocysts but did not have an identifiable sebaceous
