Historical and contemporary views on cholera transmission: are we repeating past discussions? Can lessons learned from cholera be applied to COVID-19?

Cholera, a devastating diarrheal disease that caused several global pandemics in the last centuries, may share some similarities with the new COVID-19. Cholera has affected many populations in history and still remains a significant burden in developing countries. The main transmission route was thought to be predominantly through contaminated drinking water. However, revisiting the historical data collected during the Copenhagen 1853 cholera outbreak allowed us to re-evaluate the role of drinking-water transmission in a city-wide outbreak and reconsider some critical transmission routes, whic

Variability in Donor Lung Culture and Relative Humidity Impact the Stability of 2009 Pandemic H1N1 Influenza Virus on Nonporous Surfaces.

Respiratory viruses can be transmitted by multiple modes, including contaminated surfaces, commonly referred to as fomites. Efficient fomite transmission requires that a virus remain infectious on a given surface material over a wide range of environmental conditions, including different relative humidities. Prior work examining the stability of influenza viruses on surfaces has relied upon virus grown in media or eggs, which does not mimic the composition of virus-containing droplets expelled from the human respiratory tract. In this study, we examined the stability of the 2009 pandemic H1N1

Protective isolation in a burns unit: the use of plastic isolators and air curtains.

The use of plastic isolators and of an ;air curtain' isolator for protection of patients against infection was studied in a burns unit.Preliminary bacteriological tests showed that very few airborne bacteria gained access to a plastic ventilated isolator; even when the filter and pre-filter were removed from the air inflow, settle-plate counts inside the isolator were much lower than those in the open ward, but the difference was smaller in tests made with an Anderson air sampler, which showed also that fewer large bacteria-carrying particles appeared inside the isolator than outside it. A proposal to reduce the risk of transmission of human papilloma virus via transvaginal ultrasound.

Three steps must be followed to prevent the transmission of infection via a contaminated transvaginal ultrasound probe: cleaning the probe after every use, high-level disinfection, and covering the probe with a single-use barrier during the examination. There may be critical flaws in at least 2 of these steps as they are currently practiced. First, 2 widely used disinfectants, glutaraldehyde and orthophthalaldehyde, have recently been found to be ineffective at neutralizing human papilloma virus type 16 and type 18. Second, commercial ultrasound probe covers have an unacceptable rate of leakag

A model of the transmission of micro-organisms in a public setting and its correlation to pathogen infection risks.

AIM: Gastro-intestinal infections are widespread in the community and have considerable economic consequences. In this study, we followed chains of infection from a public toilet scenario, looking at infection risks by correlating the transmission of bacteria, fungi and viruses to our current knowledge of infectious doses. METHODS AND RESULTS: Transmission of Escherichia coli, Bacillus atrophaeus spores, Candida albicans and bacteriophage MS2 from hands to surfaces was examined in a transmission model, that is toilet brush, door handle to water tap. The load of viable pathogens was significan

The evolution of respiratory Cryptosporidiosis: evidence for transmission by inhalation.

The protozoan parasite Cryptosporidium infects all major vertebrate groups and causes significant diarrhea in humans, with a spectrum of diseases ranging from asymptomatic to life-threatening. Children and immunodeficient individuals are disproportionately affected, especially in developing countries, where cryptosporidiosis contributes substantially to morbidity and mortality in preschool-age children. Despite the enormous disease burden from cryptosporidiosis, no antiprotozoal agent or vaccine exists for effective treatment or prevention. Cryptosporidiosis involving the respiratory tract has

[Pandemic influenza: rapid sanitary-hygienic measures for initial containment of diffusion].

Viral respiratory diseases may be characterized by rapid diffusion in population, that often cause epidemic outbreaks or pandemic. Besides, typical high mutations of involved virus (almost always influenza virus) can reduce the validity of the up to date available vaccine. The achievement of new vaccines can require prolonged period. In addition, the availability and efficacy of antiviral drugs against new viruses should be evaluated before their uses. Influenza virus replication occurs in the epithelial cells of the respiratory system, and viruses, present in contaminated secretions, spread m

Ophthalmia neonatorum in a trachoma endemic area.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Chlamydia trachomatis can be directly transmitted by sexual or perinatal contact and indirectly transmitted by flies or fomites. Whether distinct epidemiologic forces among human populations or biologic characteristics of the organism are responsible for the different routes of transmission is uncertain. STUDY DESIGN: To determine if ophthalmia neonatorum and trachoma are linked epidemiologically, 38 infants with ophthalmia and 277 children with trachoma were studied for evidence of C. trachomatis infection using culture, antigen and DNA detection tests. The study w

Mousepox in inbred mice innately resistant or susceptible to lethal infection with ectromelia virus. IV. Studies with the Moscow strain.

The pathogenesis and transmission of infection with the Moscow strain of ectromelia virus were studied in inbred mice. BALB/cAnNcr had high morbidity and mortality and C57BL/6Ncr (B6) mice had high morbidity and low mortality. Virus was detected in B6 mice for 2 weeks after subcutaneous (s.c.) inoculation and infected mice developed lesions compatible with acute mousepox. B6 inoculated by footpad transmitted infection to cagemates for up to five weeks and soiled cages that had housed infected mice were infectious for three weeks. S.c.-inoculated B6 mice also transmitted by contact for 2 weeks.

A Clinical Case of Viral Keratitis.

Keratitis is a pathological condition involving inflammation of the cornea. It can be an infectious or non-infectious disease. The causative organisms of keratitis are categorized as bacteria, viruses, fungi, or parasites. The viruses responsible for causing keratitis are herpes simplex virus (HSV), varicella-zoster virus, and adenoviruses. The clinical features of this infection may range from pain and redness of the eye to scarring of the cornea or blindness. We present the case of a 71-year-old elderly female patient suffering from viral (HSV) keratitis. She was referred to the department o

First molecular detection of Babesia bigemina in horseflies from Uruguay.

Bovine babesiosis and anaplasmosis are primarily transmitted by the biological vector Rhipicephalus microplus. However, Anaplasma marginale may also be mechanically transmitted through the bites of haematophagous flies such as tabanids. While biological transmission by ticks is the predominant route for Babesia species, some reports suggest that mechanical transmission via fomites contaminated with merozoites may occur. Additionally, mechanical vectors such as tabanids may contribute to the spread of the disease. This study investigated the presence of Babesia bigemina and Babesia bovis in tab

[Viruses present in the environment: virological considerations and examples of their impact on human health].

Animal viruses are present in most human environments. Their viability in these media is very variable and the most important element that conditions this viability is the existence or not of a phospholipid envelope surrounding the nucleocapsid. After some general considerations on the structure of viruses, their multiplication cycle and their resistance to different physico-chemical agents, some examples of the impact of animal viruses present in the environment on human health will be presented. The situations that are related concern recent epidemiological events: circulation of type 2 poli

Disease Occurrence in- and the Transferal of Zoonotic Agents by North American Feedlot Cattle.

North America is a large producer of beef and contains approximately 12% of the world's cattle inventory. Feedlots are an integral part of modern cattle production in North America, producing a high-quality, wholesome protein food for humans. Cattle, during their final stage, are fed readily digestible high-energy density rations in feedlots. Cattle in feedlots are susceptible to certain zoonotic diseases that impact cattle health, growth performance, and carcass characteristics, as well as human health. Diseases are often transferred amongst pen-mates, but they can also originate from the env

Ecology of Ebolaviruses.

Africa is becoming known for the emergence and re-emergence of Ebola virus. The virus, which was initially restricted to East and Central Africa, is now emerging in West Africa. Ecological aspects of Ebola virus diseases are poorly understood. It is suspected that the virus is circulating in the forests of Africa, mostly hosted by migratory bats, which spread the virus to other wildlife particularly great apes and duikers. Spillovers occur when humans have contacts with wildlife. Transmission of the virus within human systems occurs through contacts with body fluids of an infected person. Seve

Environmental Contamination and Hygienic Measures After Feline Calicivirus Field Strain Infections of Cats in a Research Facility.

Feline calicivirus (FCV) can cause painful oral ulcerations, salivation, gingivitis/stomatitis, fever and depression in infected cats; highly virulent virus variants can lead to fatal epizootic outbreaks. Viral transmission occurs directly or indirectly via fomites. The aim of this study was to investigate the presence and viability of FCV in the environment after sequential oronasal infections of specified pathogen-free cats with two FCV field strains in a research facility. Replicating virus was detected in saliva swabs from all ten cats after the first and in four out of ten cats after the

Occurrence of Mycoplasma haemocanis in dogs infested by ticks in Campo Grande, Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil.

Hemotropic mycoplasmas in dogs, such as Mycoplasma haemocanis, have been described worldwide. Recently, these pathogens have been reported to be causative agent of zoonosis. It is known that its transmission may occur through the action of blood-sucking arthropods (e.g. ticks or fleas), through blood transfusion, contaminated fomites and/or transplacentally. In Brazil, M. haemocanis is present in practically all regions and the tick Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu lato is suspected the main vector. In the municipality of Campo Grande, state of Mato Grosso do Sul, there is little information abo

Human adenovirus: Viral pathogen with increasing importance.

The aim of this review is to describe the biology of human adenovirus (HAdV), the clinical and epidemiological characteristics of adenoviral epidemic keratoconjunctivitis and to present a practical update on its diagnosis, treatment, and prophylaxis. There are two well-defined adenoviral keratoconjunctivitis clinical syndromes: epidemic keratoconjunctivitis (EKC) and pharyngoconjunctival fever (PCF), which are caused by different HAdV serotypes. The exact incidence of adenoviral conjunctivitis is still poorly known. However, cases are more frequent during warmer months. The virus is endemic in
