Clinical manifestations of food allergy: differentiating true allergy from food intolerance.

Food allergy is an abnormal immunologic reaction to food proteins. In this article, we differentiate food allergy from food intolerance and other conditions that may mimic food allergy. We describe clinical presentations of food allergy, outline a practical approach for evaluating patients with suspected food allergy, and discuss recommendations for management.

Food allergy and non-allergic food hypersensitivity in children and adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have shown a 10-fold discrepancy of self-reported food-induced symptoms and physician-diagnosed food hypersensitivity. Little information is available on the prevalence of food hypersensitivity in unselected paediatric populations. No data were available for German children. OBJECTIVE: To study the perception of food-induced symptoms in the paediatric population, to investigate the allergens accused, to objectify patients' reports, and to identify subgroups at risk of having food-induced allergy (FA) or non-allergic food hypersensitivity (NAFH) reactions. METHODS

[Food hypersensitivity: skin test with commercial food extracts or natural products?].

In 46 patients with a suspected history of food allergy, we performed scratch tests using commercial food extracts (CF) in comparison with natural food products (NF). We found that NF brought about significantly stronger reactions than CF: 77% of the skin tests with NF were positive, whereas 75% of the tests with CF equivalents yielded negative or questionably positive results. We conclude, therefore, that in case of suspected food allergy, testing with CF only is not sufficient.

Covid-19 pandemic induced measures in food industry improves food safety as perceived by food business operators in Finland.

This study examines the response of food business operators (FBOs) to the COVID-19 pandemic in relation to food safety and FBOs' experiences of remote inspections performed by official food control. The study was conducted between November and December 2020 with a web-based questionnaire for food processing businesses in Finland. Most of the 60 responded FBOs had made changes to many own-check sectors such as working hygiene (83.4%) and preparedness for special situations (78.0%). Of the FBOs, 47.1-83.0% assessed that the changes in the own-check sectors had a positive impact on food safety an

Do food quality and food quantity talk the same? Lesson from household food security study in Embo, South Africa.

OBJECTIVES: Relating food diversity, quality, and intake is one of the key aspects in understanding household food security. This paper aimed at marying food intake and quality, both being measurement for food security. METHODS: A household food consumption survey (n=200) exploring food diversity, quality of foods, and their relation to food intake in Embo, a poor farming community in rural KwaZulu-Natal was carried out in November 2004 (period of insufficiency) and repeated in March 2005 (period of plenty). Household food intake strata were developed using matrices obtained from the Househol

Exploring the Role of Food and Food-Related Compounds in Parkinson's Disease.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenerative disease, characterized by motor and non-motor symptoms that significantly impact patients' quality of life. Beyond pharmacological treatments, nutrition plays a crucial role in the prevention and management of the disease. Nutritional interventions represent a pivotal strategy for improving clinical outcomes and quality of life in PD patients, addressing issues such as delayed gastric emptying, constipation, weight loss, malnutrition, and chewing or swallowing difficulties. A plant-based diet is particularly suitable for such

Global ethylene oxide uses in foods and considerations for food safety.

Ethylene oxide (EtO) is a sterilant widely used for medical devices, but its use is controversial due to its carcinogenicity. In some countries, EtO is also used to fumigate food to eliminate foodborne pathogens, though this practice is banned in others. National regulations on EtO use in food vary widely; exporting countries prioritize trade facilitation and prevention of foodborne illness, while importing countries emphasize maintaining food safety and promoting domestic public health. These divergent public health priorities present challenges to establishing universal maximum residue limit

Ethnic foods of Northeast India: insight into the light of food safety.

BACKGROUND: Traditional and fermented foods are widely consumed by the ethnic population of Northeast India. These foods are not only very nutritious, easily available, and reasonably priced, but also boost immunity and protect from various seasonal infections and have been reported through several investigations. However, pathogens transmitted by these foods have never been reported. The process of preparation and preservation of fermented traditional foods involves various steps that can prompt contamination risks. Using the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR)-FoodNet surveillance data

"Maybe it's Not Just the Food?" A Food and Mood Focus Group Study.

Epidemiological and intervention studies in nutritional psychiatry suggest that the risk of mood disorders is associated with what we eat. However, few studies use a person-centred approach to explore the food and mood relationship. In this qualitative study of 50 Australian participants, we explored individuals' experiences with food and mood as revealed during focus group discussions. Using a thematic template analysis, we identified three themes in the food and mood relationship: (i) social context: familial and cultural influences of food and mood, (ii) social economics: time, finance, and

Breadfruit flour is a healthy option for modern foods and food security.

Breadfruit is a traditional staple crop from Pacific islands with the potential to improve worldwide food security and mitigate diabetes. Flour produced from breadfruit is a gluten-free, low glycemic index, nutrient dense and complete protein option for modern foods but basic scientific knowledge of health impacts of a breadfruit-based diet in animals and humans was lacking. We designed a series of studies to provide basic and fundamental data on impacts of a breadfruit-based diet through an in vitro and in vivo model. Cooked breadfruit flour was digested through a multi-stage enzyme digestion

Food allergy to previously tolerated foods: Course and patient characteristics.

BACKGROUND: The acquisition of food allergy (FA) to previously safely consumed basic food proteins is an unusual presentation of immunoglobulin E (IgE)-mediated allergic disease. OBJECTIVE: We sought to characterize patients who developed FA to previously tolerated foods (FA-PTF), including underlying reasons for and length of elimination diet of previously tolerated foods. METHODS: Patients (n = 30) with complaints consistent with FA to foods previously consumed safely were evaluated. Clinical history was obtained, and skin prick testing and graded oral food challenges (OFC) were performed.

The impact of a school food aid program on household food insecurity.

BACKGROUND: We had a unique opportunity to establish the extent of food insecurity and the potential impact of a large-scale school-based nutritional program, in low-socioeconomic status districts of Greece, during the current economic crisis. METHODS: Around 162 schools with 25 349 students participated during the 2012-2013 school year. Each student received a daily healthy meal designed by nutrition specialists. Food insecurity levels, measured using the Food Security Survey Module were assessed at baseline and after a 1-8-month intervention period. Pre-post intervention responses were matc

Caregivers of children with no food allergy--their experiences and perception of food allergy.

BACKGROUND: Food allergy (FA) is one of the most important health issues in schoolchildren. Although one of the most common places where pediatric anaphylaxis occurs is the home of a peer, the perception and experiences of caregivers who do not have a child with FA are unclear. METHODS: An anonymous paper-based questionnaire was distributed to caregivers of FA children (FA caregivers) in the National Center for Child Health and Development and caregivers of non-FA children (non-FA caregivers) in public school in Tokyo. We examined the perception and experiences of FA among three groups: Group

A Review of the Role of Food and the Food System in the Transmission and Spread of Ebolavirus.

The current outbreak of Ebola virus disease (EVD) centered in West Africa is the largest in history, with nearly ten times more individuals contracting the disease than all previous outbreaks combined. The details of human-to-human and zoonotic ebolavirus transmission have justifiably received the largest share of research attention, and much information exists on these topics. However, although food processing-in the form of slaughtering and preparing wildlife for consumption (referred to as bushmeat)-has been implicated in EVD outbreaks, the full role of food in EVD spread is poorly understo

Review article: the diagnosis and management of food allergy and food intolerances.

BACKGROUND: Adverse reactions to food include immune mediated food allergies and non-immune mediated food intolerances. Food allergies and intolerances are often confused by health professionals, patients and the public. AIM: To critically review the data relating to diagnosis and management of food allergy and food intolerance in adults and children. METHODS: MEDLINE, EMBASE and the Cochrane Database were searched up until May 2014, using search terms related to food allergy and intolerance. RESULTS: An estimated one-fifth of the population believe that they have adverse reactions to food.

Reluctant trying of an unfamiliar food induces negative affection for the food.

Six unfamiliar foods were introduced to children (8-11 years old, n=72) who responded (yes/no) to questions as to whether they (1) had earlier seen, (2) had earlier tasted, (3) were willing to try, and (4) actually tried each food when given the opportunity. Pleasantness (if not tasted, expected pleasantness) of the foods was also rated. Children who wanted to try a food and tasted it, rated it pleasant. Children who were unwilling to try a food, but in spite of that tasted it, rated the pleasantness negatively and largely similarly to those who rated their expected pleasantness, without tasti

Analgesia accompanying food consumption requires ingestion of hedonic foods.

Animals eat rather than react to moderate pain. Here, we examined the behavioral, hedonic, and neural requirements for ingestion analgesia in ad libitum fed rats. Noxious heat-evoked withdrawals were similarly suppressed during self-initiated chocolate eating and ingestion of intraorally infused water, sucrose, or saccharin, demonstrating that ingestion analgesia does not require feeding motivation, self-initiated food procurement, sucrose, or calories. Rather, food hedonics is important because neither salt ingestion nor quinine rejection elicited analgesia. During quinine-induced nausea and

Food intolerance and food allergy in children: a review of 68 cases.

The clinical and laboratory features of 68 children with food intolerance or food allergy are reviewed. Young children were affected the most with 79% first experiencing symptoms before age 1 year. Forty-eight (70%) children presented with gastrointestinal symptoms (vomiting, diarrhoea, colic, abdominal pain, failure to thrive), 16 (24%) children with skin manifestations (eczema, urticaria, angioneurotic oedema, other rashes), and 4 (6%) children with wheeze. Twenty-one children had failed to thrive before diagnosis. A single food (most commonly cows' milk) was concerned in 28 (41%) cases. For
