Brand and addiction: A network analysis of scientific literature.

OBJECTIVE: The paper conducts a network analysis of the fragmented literature on brand and addiction. METHOD: A thematic map, thematic evolution, word cloud, co-citation analysis, and cooperation networks were utilized to identify brand addiction study trends and topics. RESULTS: The data show that marketing and psychiatry have interdisciplinary groupings and multidisciplinary publications. These groups reflect societal changes, particularly the shift from traditional to digital challenges. Fast food addiction is different from alcohol and cigarette addictions due to its ease and extensive m

Addiction spectrum disorder: a conceptual framework for comprehensive understanding of addictive disorders.

The term addiction or addictive disorder refers to a psychiatric condition that is characterized impulsive and compulsive seeking targets or action executions despite negative consequences are expected to occur. However, it has been used to lump widely heterogeneous conditions, such as substance use disorders, behavioral addictions, and food addiction, together, which has been causing a serious problem in understanding and defining the addictive disorder. Here we deliberate a framework toward comprehensive understanding of addictive disorders that overcome the heterogeneities of substance use

Definition of Substance and Non-substance Addiction.

Substance addiction (or drug addiction) is defined as a neuropsychiatric disorder characterized by a recurring desire to continue taking the drug despite harmful consequences. It is hypothesized to follow a heuristic framework that involves three stages (binge/intoxication, withdrawal/negative effect, and preoccupation/anticipation). Non-substance addiction (or behavioral addiction) mainly includes pathological gambling, food addiction, internet addiction, and mobile phone addiction. Their definition is similar to drug addiction, but differs from each other in specific domains. In this review,

Development and Validation of a Brief Measure of Eating Compulsivity (MEC).

Food addiction is increasingly being recognised as a contributory factor in overweight and obesity. Management of eating compulsivity, a key component of food addiction, may assist greatly in the successful treatment of obesity. Measurement of food addiction and its core characteristic of eating compulsivity is fundamental to increasing understandings of the concept of food addiction, its prevalence among people with and without obesity and its utility within a treatment context. The current study describes the development and initial validation of a brief measure of eating compulsivity that c

About Sugar Addiction.

PURPOSE: Sugar addiction, characterized by excessive cravings for high-sugar foods, poses a significant health challenge in modern society. The parallels between sugar and drug addiction have attracted attention, prompting extensive research on the neurological mechanisms involved. METHOD: This review summarizes recent research on sugar addiction and its impact on health. FINDING: High-sugar consumption activates the brain's reward circuits-a positive reinforcement mechanism-including the dopamine and endorphin systems, which are associated with satisfaction and pleasure. Chronic exposure to

The solution to narcotic addiction in the People's Republic of China.

The People's Republic of China dealt with addiction as a political problem, offering the new society hope, food, shelter, work, and land instead of opium. Addiction no longer had its appeal. Opium producing poppies were replaced by food corps. Large opium distributors were imprisoned. Addicts were "clean". A mass campaign against addiction mobilized the entire nation. Before Liberation in 1949, the Chinese Communist Party had kept opium out of their areas. However, it took until 1953 to rid China completely of opium. Twenty million Chinese outside the People's Republic of China continue to hav

Sex differences in addictive disorders.

Gender-dependent differences in the rate of initiation and frequency of misuse of addicting drugs have been widely described. Yet, men and women also differ in their propensity to become addicted to other rewarding stimuli (e.g., sex, food) or activities (e.g., gambling, exercising). The goal of the present review is to summarize current evidence for gender differences not only in drug addiction, but also in other forms of addictive behaviours. Thus, we first reviewed studies showing gender-dependent differences in drug addiction, food addiction, compulsive sexual activity, pathological gambli

Adolescents' Addictive Phone Use: Associations with Eating Behaviors and Adiposity.

Concerns have been raised about excessive or "addictive" phone use among adolescents, and the impact that addictive phone use (APU) can have on adolescent development and health. Most research on the physical health correlates of smartphone use has been limited to sleep health, whereas other outcomes, such as eating behaviors and obesity risk have not received as much attention. To address this gap in the literature, we examined the association between APU and emotion regulation difficulties, impulsivity, maladaptive eating behaviors, and adiposity in a sample of 111 adolescents. We found that

Prevalence and correlates of addictive eating behaviours in a large cohort of Australian adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: Research shows highly palatable foods can elicit addictive eating behaviours or 'food addiction'. Early adolescence is theorised to be a vulnerable period for the onset of addictive eating behaviours, yet minimal research has examined this. This study explored the prevalence and correlates of addictive eating behaviours in a large early adolescent sample. METHODS: 6640 Australian adolescents (Mage = 12.7 ± 0.5, 49%F) completed an online survey. Addictive eating was measured with the Child Yale Food Addiction Scale (YFAS-C). Negative-binomial generalised linear models examined assoc

Hypothalamic Responses to Cocaine and Food Cues in Individuals with Cocaine Dependence.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with cocaine addiction are characterized by under-responsiveness to natural reinforcers. As part of the dopaminergic pathways, the hypothalamus supports motivated behaviors. Rodent studies suggested inter-related roles of the hypothalamus in regulating drug and food intake. However, few studies have investigated hypothalamic responses to drugs and food or related cues in humans. METHODS: We examined regional responses in 20 cocaine-dependent and 24 healthy control participants exposed to cocaine/food (cocaine dependent) and food (healthy control) vs neutral cues during

Adapting anti-tobacco messages to ultraprocessed foods: message framing's impact on attitudes toward the food industry.

OBJECTIVE: Ultraprocessed food consumption is associated with worse health. Ultraprocessed food companies apply production and advertising tactics used for tobacco products. Anti-tobacco campaigns that have highlighted industry manipulation have reduced youth tobacco use and increased support for tobacco-related policies. This study explored whether similar messaging affected attitudes and beliefs toward the food industry, support for obesity-related policies, and weight stigma. METHODS: Participants aged 18 to 25 years were randomized to watch presentations emphasizing the following: 1) food

Physical complaints and emotional symptoms in the context of series watching: a multicenter latent profile and network analysis in Brazil and Canada.

INTRODUCTION: Few studies have examined the physical complaints, emotional aspects, behavioral indicators, and quality of life associated with series watching (PCSW) across cultural contexts. METHODS: This multicenter, cross-sectional study investigated latent profiles of PCSW and their associations with emotional variables, smartphone addiction, food addiction, quality of life, and series-watching intensity (SWI) among university students in Brazil (n = 1,190) and Canada (n = 306). Participants completed five author-developed PCSW self-report items, used as an operational measure rather than

Dopamine D2 receptors in addiction-like reward dysfunction and compulsive eating in obese rats.

We found that development of obesity was coupled with emergence of a progressively worsening deficit in neural reward responses. Similar changes in reward homeostasis induced by cocaine or heroin are considered to be crucial in triggering the transition from casual to compulsive drug-taking. Accordingly, we detected compulsive-like feeding behavior in obese but not lean rats, measured as palatable food consumption that was resistant to disruption by an aversive conditioned stimulus. Striatal dopamine D2 receptors (D2Rs) were downregulated in obese rats, as has been reported in humans addicted

Similarities and Differences in Diagnostic Criteria.

In this chapter, we compare and discuss the similarities and differences in diagnostic criteria between substance and non-substance addictions. First, several diagnostic criteria for substance addiction are introduced, focusing on widely recognized diagnostic criteria, with a comparison of their similarities and differences. Second, we outline the diagnostic criteria for several non-substance addictions, including gambling disorder, Internet addiction, food addiction, and hypersexual disorder. It is observed that both substance and non-substance addictions share many common symptoms. However,
