An Examination of Medically Necessary Diets within the Framework of the Thrifty Food Plan.

The Thrifty Food Plan (TFP) determines the maximum allotment of nutrition assistance for over forty million Americans participating in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). This research recalculates the official TFP allocations using a more straightforward model that minimizes cost subject to nutrient constraints to establish a baseline for adult females and males. We then examine three additional diet plans to evaluate their feasibility under the current SNAP benefit allotment: a diet for lactose intolerance, for persons with type 2 diabetes, and a diet for pregnant women. Food procurement and the nutritional adequacy of diets in low-income families.

Seventy-six white and black low-income families were interviewed weekly during 1 month to determine how much they spent on food using Food Stamps, WIC coupons, and cash and how much additional food they obtained from different food and meals programs. After families had received their public assistance and Food Stamp allotments for the month, a 24-hour recall was obtained each week from each family member so that food intake could be monitored from the recalls as food-buying resources were depleted. Although families bought most of their food the first 2 weeks, they maintained a relatively con

Changes in Food Insecurity Among US Adults With Low Income During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

IMPORTANCE: Racial and ethnic minority groups disproportionately experience food insecurity. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the US enacted temporary food assistance policies, including emergency allotments for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits. The effects of the pandemic and these policies on food insecurity by race and ethnicity are unclear. OBJECTIVE: To examine prevalence trends in food insecurity by racial and ethnic groups and SNAP use before and during the pandemic. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cross-sectional survey study analyzed National Health Int

An examination of at-home food preparation activity among low-income, food-insecure women.

A secondary analysis of data from a study of nutritional vulnerability among 153 women in families seeking charitable food assistance was undertaken to estimate the extent and nutritional significance of at-home food preparation activity for these women. At-home food preparation was estimated from women's reported food intakes from three 24-hour recalls. The relationships between food preparation and energy and nutrient intake, food intake, and 30-day household food security status were characterized. Almost all participants (97%) consumed foods prepared from scratch at least once during the t

Lessons learned from the "Spend Less. Eat Well. Feel Better." program efficacy trial.

"Spend Less. Eat Well. Feel Better." (SLEWFB) is a 3-hour intervention designed to improve food resource management ability, health, and food security status. This program efficacy trial targeted clients seeking financial aid to prevent homelessness. A randomized controlled design using a 1-hour food safety intervention as a control group was used. Four variables were targeted over a 30-day time period: (1) food security status, (2) basic financial management, (3) average fruit and vegetable intake, and (4) goal accomplishment. Repeated-measures analysis of variance and chi-square analysis wer

Somos Esenciales, We are Essential: Our Mental Health is Essential. Research for, by and of the Latinx Community in the Mission District during the Pandemic.

We are Latinx immigrants and children of Latinx immigrants. We provided emergency volunteer services at the Mission Food Bank during the pandemic to provide food assistance to low-income families in the Mission District and the city of San Francisco. In March 2021, we were invited to lead a research project that we call "We are Essential". Here we share our process and a few of our findings on the mental health of San Francisco's Latinx community during the pandemic, with a focus on our children and youth. A full report of our findings will be published in 2024.

Reconsidering the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program as community development.

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) protects households from severe food insecurity or extreme poverty, buffers against certain adverse health effects, and exhibits a multiplier effect on the nation's economy. Nonetheless, SNAP remains contentious and benefit reductions are currently being debated. One new direction is to reconceptualize people-based SNAP allocations within place-based community development. Programs such as the federal Healthy Food Financing Initiative encourage retailer development in underserved neighborhoods, creating healthy options and opportunities to r

Does food insecurity elucidate the relationship between food addiction and binge eating among bariatric surgery candidates?

BACKGROUND: Food addiction symptoms and binge eating symptoms both include the experience of loss of control eating and emotional dysregulation and are prevalent among adult metabolic and bariatric surgery (MBS) candidates. OBJECTIVES: To examine whether food insecurity elucidates the relationship between food addiction symptoms and binge eating symptoms. We hypothesized an indirect effect through food insecurity on the relationship between food addiction symptoms and binge eating symptoms. We also hypothesized that food insecurity moderates the relationship between food addiction symptoms an

Exploring the Role of Social Supermarkets in Addressing Food Insecurity and Food Waste: A Scoping Review.

Tackling food insecurity and food waste are two interrelated and complex policy challenges. Innovations in food retail termed 'social supermarkets' (SSMs) could provide a solution, utilising surplus produce from mainstream food retailers, which are then traded at reduced prices. This scoping review aimed to synthesise the peer-reviewed research literature concerning the application of SSM models internationally, with a particular focus on how they influence food insecurity and reduce food waste. Free-text keywords and index terms were combined with Boolean operators for comprehensive searches

Modelling enablers and barriers to improve uptake of a fruit and vegetable voucher scheme (the fresh street community) in England: a TISM-MICMAC approach.

BACKGROUND: Improving equitable access to fresh fruit and vegetables (FV) remains a critical public health priority in the UK, particularly in low-income communities where affordability, accessibility, and social barriers limit healthy food choices. The Fresh Street Community scheme, a place-based FV voucher initiative in England, aims to enhance dietary equity by enabling households to purchase fresh produce from local community centres. Building on prior feasibility research, this study applies a systems-modelling approach to explore how multiple enablers and barriers interact to influence s

A Case Study of Food Insecurity Screening and Referral: Implementation Barriers, Facilitators, and Lessons from a Healthcare-Food Bank Partnership.

BACKGROUND: Routine food insecurity screening in healthcare is recommended, yet the impact of community referrals remains uncertain. This study examined whether food-insecure patients identified through a free cancer screening program were successfully connected to resources via a local food bank partnership. METHODS: Women screened for breast or cervical cancer through a state-funded grant were assessed for food insecurity using the Hunger Vital Signs tool. Patients identified as food insecure were offered referrals to food bank services during a follow up call. One to three weeks later, a b

Impact of smoking cessation on household food security.

PURPOSE: Smokers can spend a substantial amount on cigarettes, potentially constraining their ability to purchase food. We tested the association of smoking cessation and household food security. METHODS: Using the Current Population Survey (2001-2019), we longitudinally linked the Tobacco Use Supplement and the Food Security Supplement (n = 71,278). Among adult smokers (n = 13,144), we used modified Poisson regression to model household food insecurity as a function of quit status (continuing smokers vs. recent quitters), adjusting for sex, age, household size, children in the household, and

Household food insecurity with hunger is associated with women's food intakes, health and household circumstances.

This study investigated food intake patterns and contextual factors related to household food insecurity with hunger among a sample of 153 women in families seeking charitable food assistance in Toronto. Women in households characterized by food insecurity with severe or moderate hunger over the past 30 d (as assessed by the Food Security Module) reported lower intakes of vegetables and fruit, and meat and alternatives than those in households with no hunger evident. Women were more likely to report household food insecurity with hunger over the past 12 mo and 30 d if they also reported longst

Single-parenthood and health conditions among children receiving public assistance in Japan: a cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Children's healthy development is important. While governmental public assistance benefits financially troubled families, it cannot compensate for a lack of social support. Single-parenthood is a health risk factor for children owing to low-income-associated food insecurity and stress. No study has investigated the association between single-parenthood and health status in children from families receiving public assistance. This study aimed to examine the association between single-parent households and children's health among public assistance recipients in Japan by using linkage

Diet and health outcomes in vulnerable populations.

Good nutritional health is essential to physical and cognitive function, prevention or management of chronic health conditions, and prevention of disability. Poor nutritional health describes dietary intakes of inadequate amounts of energy, protein, and individual or multiple micronutrients. Homebound older adults are considered the most vulnerable for poor nutritional health; many are poor and experience persistent food insufficiency. This chapter discusses the importance of dietary intakes, especially for homebound older adults, and presents resource-related factors that influence food choic

Interventions to optimise nutrition in older people in hospitals and long-term care: Umbrella review.

BACKGROUND: Inpatients have a high need for protein-energy intake because of increased physical stress metabolism due to illnesses. Protein-energy undernutrition in older patients increases the risk of complications such as falls, pressure ulcers and even death. An overview of effective interventions addressing this complex issue of malnutrition in older people is missing. AIMS: To give an overview of effective interventions to optimise nutrition in older people in hospitals and long-term care.
