INTRODUCTION: Subjects with Down syndrome (DS) are known to be affected by various foot deformities. Despite the fact that some of these deformities have been reported in the literature, a more comprehensive description would be of benefit. The aim of this study is to investigate the prevalence of known foot deformities in patients with DS and of other previously non-described foot anomalies in this population.
HYPOTHESIS: Subjects with DS have an increased prevalence of foot deformities compared to control subjects.
METHODS: Fifty-five subjects with DS (age: 14.6±7.4 years) had undergone po

Severe contraction deformities of the foot, e.g. after trauma or spasticity, often lead to an inability to walk and can, in part, only be rectified by corrective bone osteotomy of the hind and middle foot. In this article, we discuss hind and middle foot osteotomies in cases of severe foot deformities in adolescents and adults. The surgical techniques of Lambrinudi, Imhäuser and Lelièvre will be considered. The surgical technique of Lambrinudi uses a triple arthrodesis between the talus, calcaneus and navicular bones, and the cuboid bone, in addition to the removal of a bone wedge from the tal

In a prospective study of 2,401 newborns, the incidence of foot deformities was 4%, of which three fourths were various forms of adductus anomalies. At age 16 years, the children with a foot deformity and a random sample of those with normal feet as newborns were examined by dynamic foot pressure (EMED) and gait analysis (Vifor). The natural course of all congenital foot deformities, except clubfoot, was favorable. The importance of monitoring the children during the entire growth period is shown by the fact that at age 6 years, 87%, and at 16 years, 95% of the adductus deformities had resolve

Sixty-three patients with rigid equinovarus contractures of the foot following ischemic episodes in the lower leg were treated at our institute from 1983 to 1994 by lengthening the Achilles tendon and the tendon of the m.tibialis posterior, release of the tendons of the m.flexor digitorum longus and the m.flexor hallucis longus and release of the dorsal capsule of the ankle joint. Patients with an equinus deformity greater than 20 degrees, with an additional hind foot varus deformity of more than 5 degrees and/or malrotation of the midfoot were not eligible for this procedure. The initial equi

OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to compare the prevalence and severity of foot deformities and the development of ulcerations in patients after a great toe amputations.
RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: We evaluated the presence of deformities of the toes and metatarsophalangeal joints (MTPJs) in patients with a great toe amputation who had an intact unamputated contralateral foot. The contralateral foot served as the patient's own control. We used a binomial test for paired data to compare the presence of deformity and ulcer formation and Fisher's exact test to compare joint flexibility in toes and MTPJs

A retrospective clinical and radiologic study was made of 16 children with foot deformities and associated occult spinal abnormalities in a 3-year period. Eleven children had bilateral foot deformities; the deformities were unilateral in five. Midline cutaneous lesions of the back were noted in 13 children; the most common dermal sign was a hairy patch. All children had radiologic features of spinal dysraphism on combined computed tomography (CT) scan and myelogram. Spinal dysraphism was not considered in the initial assessment of four children. Children with foot deformity should therefore ha

Progressive collapsing foot deformity is a new nomenclature coined by a group of expert foot and ankle orthopaedic surgeons who published numerous articles on adult flatfoot deformities. The consensus statements were published in 2020 due to concern that traditional terminologies such as "posterior tibial tendon dysfunction," "adult acquired flatfoot deformity," and numerous others could be confusing to physicians/health care professionals and do not adequately encompass the deformity. The consensus group also designed a new classification system to simplify the decision-making process that co

BACKGROUND: The transverse arch (TA) has recently been shown to significantly increase the intrinsic stiffness of the midfoot when coupled with the medial longitudinal arch (MLA). Progressive collapsing foot deformity (PCFD) is a complex deformity that ultimately results in a loss of stiffness and collapse of the MLA. The role of the TA has not been investigated in patients diagnosed with this disorder using weightbearing CT (WBCT). Therefore, this study aims to answer the following questions: (1) Is the curvature of the TA decreased in PCFD? (2) Where within the midfoot does TA curvature flat

Adult flatfoot is a common foot deformity, mainly manifested as medial arch collapsing, hindfoot valgus and forefoot abduction. People have a more thorough understanding of the pathological changes and pathogenesis of flatfoot with further research. There is a new expert consensus for adult flatfoot published in Foot & Ankle Inter. in 2020. The expert panel reviewed the latest literature to develop consensus recommendations for flatfoot, including its nomenclature, diagnosis, classification and operative treatment. The consensus represents a new understanding of the disease and a new concept b

Progressive collapsing foot deformity (PCFD) is characterized by a progressive subluxation of the peritalar bones and respective joints. Two-dimensional conventional radiographs are limited in their ability to visualize the peritalar bones and joints with adequate detail to describe the complex three-dimensional deformity. An improved understanding of the relationship between joint coverage and deformity would allow clinicians to use coverage analysis to distinguish among the stages of PCFD. The aim of this study was to analyze the joint coverage of the six articular relationships within the t

INTRODUCTION: Progressive collapsing foot deformity (PCFD) is frequently associated with a gastrocnemius contracture. Surgical treatment of PCFD often includes a gastrocnemius recession in addition to other corrective procedures, which typically requires a period of restricted weight bearing postoperatively. Isolated gastrocnemius recession may allow passive correction of the deformity, improve orthotic fit, and obviate the need for full reconstruction and restricted weight bearing. The goal of this study was to evaluate patient-reported outcomes after an isolated gastrocnemius recession for f

Equinus deformity of the foot is a common feature of hemiplegia, which impairs the gait pattern of patients. The aim of the present study was to explore the role of ankle-foot deformity in gait impairment. A hierarchical cluster analysis was used to classify the gait patterns of 49 chronic hemiplegic patients with equinus deformity of the foot, based on temporal-distance parameters and joint kinematic measures obtained by an innovative protocol for motion assessment in the sagittal, frontal, and transverse planes, synthesized by parametrical analysis. Cluster analysis identified five subgroups

Cerebral palsy (CP) is a complex syndrome, with multiple interactions between joints and muscles. Abnormalities in movement patterns can be measured using motion capture techniques, however determining which abnormalities are primary, and which are secondary, is a difficult task. Deformity of the foot has anecdotally been reported to produce compensatory abnormalities in more proximal lower limb joints, as well as in the contralateral limb. However, the exact nature of these compensations is unclear. The aim of this paper was to provide clear and objective criteria for identifying compensatory

OBJECTIVES: We evaluated tibialis posterior tendon (TPT) transfers in patients with drop foot deformity.
METHODS: Eight patients with drop foot deformity (2 females, 6 males; mean age 40 years; range 15 to 75 years) underwent TPT transfer to the dorsum of the foot. The deformity was on the left in three patients and on the right in five patients. Etiology was traumatic peroneal nerve injuries in six patients, and upper-level nerve injuries after hip and lumbar surgery in two patients. For clinical evaluation, the patients were questioned about the results of treatment, and the Stanmore evalua

Flatfoot deformity is characterized by a multiplanar hindfoot malalignment. Although the etiology remains unclear, the deformity is mainly attributed to ligamentous laxity and dysfunction of the posterior tibial tendon. Obesity is thought to be a risk factor that additionally impairs hindfoot stability. Performing a retrospective clinical and radiological study, we compared two groups, each with 75 patients. One group included patients with a flatfoot deformity stage 2, while the other group showed no hindfoot malalignment. Reviewing the weight and calculating the body mass index revealed sign

The adult acquired flat foot requires assessment with unique casting and fabrication of support appliances. Conservative treatment is preferred as the initial protocol. Stabilization and control of affected joints can provide the patient with a decreased level of pain and an increased level of function. The orthosis design must acceptable to the patient's lifestyle to ensure compliancy.

With the aging population and improved methods of emergency transport, the number of surviving stroke and brain injury patients continues to increase. Aggressive rehabilitation of appropriate candidates is justified. In the period of spontaneous recovery, efforts are made to prevent fixed contractures using passive mobilization, splinting, nerve blocks, and electrical stimulation. If deformity persists and the patient is no longer recovering, operative management can help alleviate the functional and hygiene problems associated with these limb deformities.
