System Identification to Characterise Shoulder Joint Dynamics in Two Degrees of Freedom.

In this study, we present a new design of a shoulder perturbation robot that can characterise the dynamics of the shoulder in two degrees of freedom. It uses two linear electric motors to perturb the shoulder joint in internal/external rotation and abduction/adduction, and force and position sensors to measure the corresponding torque and angular displacement about the joint. System identification techniques are used to estimate the dynamics of the muscles around the joint. The advantage our apparatus offers over the existing ones is that it can efficiently transfer torque to the joint and mea

A targeted investigation to demonstrate the freedom of West Timor from HPAI H5N1.

In early 2004 highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 virus caused major outbreaks of disease in poultry in Indonesia. The disease was first reported in West Timor in eastern Indonesia in the same year, resulting in the death of approximately one hundred chickens from both commercial and backyard farms; however no evidence of disease has subsequently been reported in West Timor since 2007. A targeted survey was undertaken in 2013 in 2 districts of West Timor. Three hundred village and commercial poultry (292 chickens and 8 Muscovy ducks) from 10 villages and 5 live bird markets (LBMs) we

Active lower limb orthosis with one degree of freedom for people with paraplegia.

The main challenges of designing devices for paraplegic walking can be summarized into three groups, stability and comfort, high efficiency or low energy consumption, dimensions and weight. A new economical device for people with paraplegia which tackles all problems of the three groups is introduced in this paper. The main idea of this device is based on HALO mechanism. HALO is compact passive medial hip joint orthosis with contralateral hip and ankle linkage, which keeps the feet always parallel to the ground and assists swinging the leg. The medial hip joint is equipped with one actuator in

Arthritis, comorbidities, and care utilization in veterans of operations enduring and Iraqi Freedom.

Veteran populations are known to have frequencies of arthritis higher than civilian populations. The aim of this study is to define the prevalence of arthritis among a cohort of veterans from ongoing U.S. military operations. A retrospective cohort study using Veterans Administration data sources for service connected disability, comorbidities, clinic utilization, and pharmacy utilization was conducted including veterans who deployed in service to operations in Afghanistan or Iraq, comparing veterans with a diagnosis of arthritis, arthritis plus back pain, and veterans with no pain diagnoses.

Freedom Constrained Liner for the Treatment and Prevention of Dislocation in Total Hip Arthroplasty.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Dislocation is one of the most common complications following total hip arthroplasty. The aim of our study was to assess failure rate of the Biomet Freedom constrained liner (Biomet, Warsaw, IN, USA) either in revision surgery for recurrent dislocation, or as a preventive method in high dislocation risk patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We assessed retrospectively 105 consecutive surgical procedures in 103 patients where a Freedom constrained liner or cup was used in Turku University Hospital over a 7-year period from 2007 to 2014. The mechanical failure rate of the devi

Aortic Valve Replacement With the Stentless Freedom SOLO Bioprosthesis: A Systematic Review.

This systematic review examined the clinical and hemodynamic performance of the stentless Freedom SOLO (Sorin Group, Milan, Italy) aortic bioprosthesis. The occurrence of postoperative thrombocytopenia was also analyzed. The Freedom SOLO is safe to use in everyday practice, with short cross-clamp times, and postoperative pacemaker implantation is notably lower. Valvular gradients are low and remain stable during short-term follow-up. Thrombocytopenia is more severe than in other aortic prostheses; however, this is without clinical consequences. Within a few years, the 15-year follow-up of this

Long-axis rotation: a missing degree of freedom in avian bipedal locomotion.

Ground-dwelling birds are typically characterized as erect bipeds having hind limbs that operate parasagittally. Consequently, most previous research has emphasized flexion/extension angles and moments as calculated from a lateral perspective. Three-dimensional (3D) motion analyses have documented non-planar limb movements, but the skeletal kinematics underlying changes in foot orientation and transverse position remain unclear. In particular, long-axis rotation of the proximal limb segments is extremely difficult to measure with topical markers. Here, we present six degree of freedom skeletal

Analysis of sampling strategies to substantiate freedom from disease in large areas.

In this paper, we deal with the strategies of surveys to substantiate freedom from disease for a certain territory. Infection might not be distributed homogeneously. So, a relatively high within-herd prevalence might be observed while the herd-level prevalence is lower. For this situation, we compare various two-stage sample strategies. The calculation of appropriate sample sizes becomes quite complicated. The theoretical generalization of the hypergeometric distribution by Cameron and Baldock [Prev. Vet. Med. 24 (1998) 1] introduces a simple way to evaluate multi-stage sample sizes while rega

Emotional Freedom Technique: Reducing Stress, Anxiety, and Burnout in Critical Care Nurses.

BACKGROUND: Critical care nurses often experience stress, anxiety, and burnout as a result of their high-stress work environments, frequent life-or-death situations, frequent need to make critical decisions, and high-acuity patients. These negative emotional states-which were exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic-may affect their work, personal lives, and overall well-being. LOCAL PROBLEM: A survey of employees of a cardiovascular specialty hospital showed that 9.7% of nurses working in the intensive care unit rated their degree of stress at work as unmanageable, with 8.3% reporting moderate s

High-Degree-of-Freedom Fabric-Based Soft Glove with Dexterous Thumb Assistance.

Fabric-based soft gloves, due to their safety, light weight, and compliance, exhibit promising potential in assisting individuals with hand impairments. However, most existing soft gloves focus solely on finger flexion and extension, with limited consideration for thumb assistance. This restricts their effectiveness in tasks requiring extensive workspace and dexterous manipulation. In this work, we present a new class of fabric-based soft glove with 15 degrees of freedom (DOFs), including finger flexion/extension, thumb abduction/adduction, thumb opposition/reposition, and finger abduction. Wave-like statistics from classical active particles with internal degrees of freedom.

Wave-like spatial statistics in walking-droplet systems are often associated with wave-mediated interactions and wave-memory effects. Here we explore how similar statistical structure can arise from the low-dimensional nonlinear dynamics of an inertial active particle with internal degrees of freedom. In this framework, steady propulsion corresponds to internal-state fixed points whose spiral or transiently chaotic relaxation organizes oscillatory ensemble densities. Local perturbations then generate wave-like statistics in both open and closed geometries, suggesting that wave-like ensemble be

Seizure freedom after surgical resection of diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging abnormalities.

OBJECTIVE: Successful epilepsy surgery requires accurate localization and removal of the epileptogenic zone. Neuroimaging helps detect structural brain abnormalities to guide surgery, but current clinical practice does not use diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (dwMRI). However, previous work has shown that diffusion abnormalities are present in epilepsy and may relate to the epileptogenic zone. Here, we investigate whether surgical resection of diffusion abnormalities relates to postoperative seizure freedom. METHODS: We investigated the association between surgical resection of d

Thalamostriatal disconnection underpins long-term seizure freedom in frontal lobe epilepsy surgery.

Around 50% of patients undergoing frontal lobe surgery for focal drug-resistant epilepsy become seizure free post-operatively; however, only about 30% of patients remain seizure free in the long-term. Early seizure recurrence is likely to be caused by partial resection of the epileptogenic lesion, whilst delayed seizure recurrence can occur even if the epileptogenic lesion has been completely excised. This suggests a coexistent epileptogenic network facilitating ictogenesis in close or distant dormant epileptic foci. As thalamic and striatal dysregulation can support epileptogenesis and discon

What Should Physicians Consider About American Indian/Alaska Native Women's Reproductive Freedom?

Historically, American Indians and Alaska Natives (AI/AN) have been subjected to a lack of control over various aspects of their lives, including their reproductive health. In discussions of family planning with AI/AN patients, clinicians must consider past violations of reproductive rights and the need for transparent consent. This article explores the following questions: What were historical violations of AI/AN women's reproductive rights? How should physicians express respect for this history and for the autonomy of AI/AN female patients regarding surgical sterilization procedures today?

Does a negative ergonovine provocation test truly predict freedom from variant angina?

Ergonovine provocation test is known to be very sensitive for diagnosing variant angina. The patient described in this study initially presented with atypical chest pain and underwent coronary angiography and ergonovine provocation tests, which were negative. The patient was subsequently prescribed a proton pump inhibitor and prokinetics for pain relief, but then presented with acute myocardial infarction and cardiogenic shock due to coronary artery vasospasm 5 years later. This case suggests that ergonovine provocation test generates false negative results, which can lead to unwanted outcomes

Dependence of planning target volume margins on degrees of freedom and correlations of uncertainties.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this paper is to describe and extend the analytical framework from the original van Herk margin recipe to deal with more complex situations, which are typical in the current era where accuracy in radiotherapy delivery has dramatically improved. This new framework deals with movement ranging from rigid motion to multiple independent CTVs, deformable CTVs, and delineation variation. METHODS: Margins for random errors could be described by dose blurring using the local uncertainty. Margins for systematic errors depend on the number of CTVs and their motion correlation, and
