A reliable surgical technique for the management of growing fractures of the frontal bone involving the orbit.

PURPOSE: Growing fractures involving the orbit occur infrequently. Due to the risk of neurological trauma and the ophthalmic sequelae of progressive intraorbital expansion of the fracture, surgical management is indicated. There is no accepted standard in the approach to the surgical management of these patients. The aim of this paper is to describe a reliable technique for the repair of growing fractures and discuss the long-term outcome. METHODS: We present two cases in which a technique using Norian CRS® (Craniofacial Repair System) fast set putty over a Medpor® scaffold was used to repair

Frontal bone remodeling for gender reassignment of the male forehead: a gender-reassignment surgery.

Gender-reassignment therapy, especially for reshaping of the forehead, can be an effective treatment to improve self-esteem. Contouring of the cranial vault, especially of the forehead, still is a rarely performed surgical procedure for gender reassignment. In addition to surgical bone remodeling, several materials have been used for remodeling and refinement of the frontal bone. But due to shortcomings of autogenous bone material and the disadvantages of polyethylene or methylmethacrylate, hydroxyapatite cement (HAC) composed of tetracalcium phosphate and dicalcium phosphate seems to be an al

Demineralized bone matrix and fat autograft in a rabbit model of frontal sinus obliteration.

OBJECTIVE: In this study, we investigate the efficacy of demineralized bone matrix (DBM) as a material for frontal sinus obliteration in a rabbit model. STUDY DESIGN AND SETTING: Twenty-four New Zealand White rabbits were divided into four groups, and the study was carried out to two time periods. Twelve rabbits underwent frontal sinus obliteration with fat autograft, and 12 rabbits underwent the procedure with DBM. At 12 weeks, six control and six study rabbits were killed. The remaining 12 rabbits were killed at 36 weeks. All specimens underwent radiologic evaluation with spiral CT followed

Frontal bone advancement stability with or without microplate fixation: an experimental study in rabbits.

Recent advancements in surgical correction of coronal suture craniosynostosis involve the overcorrection of a frontal bone segment to allow unrestricted growth of the developing brain. However, problems with segment stability and collapse have been reported. Such problems may be alleviated with microplate fixation of the segments. The present experimental study tests this hypothesis in a growing rabbit frontal bone advancement model. Sixteen 6-week-old rabbits were divided into three groups, consisting of animals with short bone segments advanced with two bone struts and fixed with Vicryl, lon

Frontal Bone Contouring and Forehead Lifting: A Retrospective Study on Aesthetic and Functional Outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Frontal bone contouring and forehead lifting are widely performed for aesthetic purposes. Emerging evidence suggests that these procedures may also alleviate frontal headache syndromes through mechanisms involving neurovascular decompression and soft tissue repositioning. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate postoperative changes in headache severity following frontal bone contouring and forehead lifting and to determine the relationship between specific intraoperative maneuvers, including frontal recess widening and supraorbital nerve decompression, and clinical outcomes METH

Hyperostosis frontalis interna and association of disease control with frontal bone thickness in acromegaly.

PURPOSE: Studies investigating hyperostosis frontalis interna (HFI) in acromegaly are limited. We aimed to investigate HFI and the association of disease control with frontal bone thickness (FBT) in acromegaly. METHODS: Adult patients with acromegaly were grouped according to the presence of HFI on the baseline MRI: Group 1 absent, Group 2 present. We measured FBT, parietal bone thickness (PBT) and occipital bone thickness (OBT) in the mid-sagittal plane on MRI. The changes between first and last measurements were analyzed. We grouped the patients as controlled vs. uncontrolled acromegaly, an

Bone wax migrates to the orbit in a patient with a frontal sinus abnormality: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Bone wax is the most widely used hemostatic bone sealant because of its availability, ease of use, immediate action, and minimal adverse effects. Several complications have been reported to be associated with the use of bone wax, such as infection, osteohypertrophy, pain, granuloma formation, allergic reaction, and thrombosis. Here, we present a rare complication, namely, bone wax migration, which developed after a craniotomy on a patient who had a frontal sinus abnormality. CASE PRESENTATION: A 51-year-old woman complained of pain and swelling in her left eye accompanied by diffi

Incidental Detection of Ossifying Fibroma of the Frontal Sinus on 99mTc-MDP Bone Scan.

Sinonasal ossifying fibroma is rare and frequently occurs in young adulthood with a female predominance. We present a case of a 48-year-old man with a history of newly diagnosed lung cancer, referred for whole-body bone scan for evaluation of metastatic disease, which showed 2 focal intense areas of tracer uptake in the frontal sinus region without other abnormalities. SPECT/CT revealed the activities were located in the frontal sinus, associated with scattered calcifications and well-defined margins. The postoperative pathological diagnosis was ossifying fibroma.

Technical strategies for en bloc resection and immediate reconstruction in hemangioma of the frontal bone.

Hemangioma of the skull is a benign solitary tumor, often found in the frontal or parietal area. A hemangioma lesion typically involves the outer table rather than the inner, but its complete removal at the diploe level is difficult. Full-thickness resection at the calvaria is often needed to ensure a free margin, but it will leave a bony defect that requires reconstruction. Although curettage and covering of the lesion with alloplastic material are a simple treatment option for hemangioma of the skull, it does not always prevent recurrence. Hence, complete resection is needed. As our technica

Facial asymmetry with enlarged frontal sinus and hyperplasia of the cranial, nasal, and mandible bones.

The conditions of facial asymmetry are caused by congenital or acquired diseases, and several unclassifiable syndromes with unknown etiologies exist. In this report, a case of facial asymmetry with enlarged frontal sinus and hyperplasia of the frontal cranial bone and nasal bone is presented. Although the etiology of the facial malformation was clear, it was thought that the cause of the enlarged frontal sinus was related to the unidentified bony hyperplasia and facial asymmetry related to hemimandibular hyperplasia.

[Osteoplasty of osseous defects of the frontal bone and orbital roof--indications, technique and results].

From 1972 to 1992, 65 patients with traumatic or postoperative defects of the orbitocranial skeleton were operated on at the department for maxillofacial surgery, University of Essen. Until 1989 alloplastic reconstruction with PMMA implants or autogenous bone grafts of the iliac crest were preferred. Since 1989 we have utilized autogenous calvarial bone grafts (17 cases). CT based models of the defect helped to select calvarial donor sites of appropriate size and contour. The calvarial autografts provided high resistance against resorption. Until now, we have seen no major donor site morbidity

Pediatric Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis: Unifocal Localization in the Frontal Bone Presenting With Periorbital Swelling.

Background: Langerhans cell histiocytosis is a rare disease, the pathogenesis of which remains a subject of debate, with considerations of either a neoplastic origin or an inflammatory nature. It arises from the uncontrolled proliferation of immature myeloid dendritic cells, leading to their accumulation in various sites. Recent studies indicate that Langerhans cell histiocytosis is a clonal neoplastic disorder driven by mutations in the MAP kinase pathway. When the bones are involved, the condition is often asymptomatic, but it can cause pain or soft tissue swelling, with the skull being the

Squash Cytology Diagnosing Plasmacytoma of Frontal Bone as First Presentation of Nonsecretory Multiple Myeloma.

Plasmacytoma of bone is one of the criteria for diagnosing plasma cell myeloma (multiple myeloma). A plasmacytoma involving a frontal bone is unusual, with only few being reported so far. Also, when typical clinical presentation is absent, diagnosis is usually not suspected clinicoradiologically. We report a rare case of frontal bone plasmacytoma presenting as a lump over the forehead, the squash cytology of which gave the diagnosis of neoplastic etiology. Thus, squash cytology helped in early and definitive diagnosis in this patient, hastening meticulous diagnostic investigations and appropri

Removal of intraosseous hemangioma in frontal bone under direct vision through a small incision.

Complete surgical excision within a margin of normal healthy bone is the treatment of choice for intraosseous hemangioma. A 56-year-old man visited with complaints of a firm, mildly tender, immovable, and palpable mass on the right forehead (size: 1.5× 1.5 cm). Non-contrast brain computed tomography performed preoperatively revealed a 1.5 cm heterogenous osteolytic lesion with suspected internal trabeculation in the right frontal bone. Under general anesthesia, a 2 cm transverse incision was made on the forehead skin rather than bicoronal incision. Full-thickness en bloc resection of the front

Split Calvarial Graft and Titanium Mesh for Reconstruction of Post-Craniotomy Frontal Bone Defect.

BACKGROUND: The goal of cranioplasty is to achieve a lifelong, stable and structural reconstruction of the cranium covered by a healthy skin and scalp flap. We present two cases of large frontal bone defect following a accident. CASES: We describe the utilization of autogenous local split calvarial graft and titanium mesh for the reconstruction of the post trauma frontal bone defect. CONCLUSION: Cranioplasty using split calvarial bone grafting for restoring large cranial defects resulting from a trauma is a useful technique, and allows the surgeon to reconstruct a moderate to large cranial d

Patient self-evaluation of intra-oral bone grafting treatment to the maxillary frontal region.

Bone grafting to the anterior region of the maxilla is a treatment method often used for reconstruction after dental trauma when teeth have been lost. The purpose of this study was to interview patients who underwent bone grafting from the chin or lateral mandible to assess the patients' experiences, especially regarding morbidity of the donor site and their overall assessment of treatment and care. Twenty-six patients who had undergone bone grafting from the chin and lateral mandible regions before implant treatment were interviewed about their experiences of treatment and present status 3-5
