Cerebral Tuberculoma of Right Frontal Lobe in an Unconscious Patient.

Cerebral tuberculoma of the brain are uncommon presentation of tuberculosis (1%). A 17-year female presented to the emergency with a Glasgow Coma Score of (eye-1, verbal-1 and motor-3), 5/15 bilateral fixed pupils with laborious breathing. The radiological features were suggestive of aintracerebral abscess/ glioma. Intraoperatively the brain was very tense and a large, vascular, mass was present that was excised completely. Her histopathology revealed features of tuberculoma and she was started on anti-tubercular treatment. She is discharged home with regular follow-up for the last 10 months.C

Are frontal and temporal lobe epilepsy dissociable in their memory functioning?

There is controversy in the literature as to how dissociable frontal lobe epilepsy (FLE) and temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) are in terms of memory deficits. Some researchers have demonstrated that FLE is associated with greater executive dysfunction including working memory, whereas TLE is associated with greater memory impairment. Others have found the two groups to be comparable in memory functioning. Hence, we examined this question in children with FLE and TLE versus typically developing controls. We found most of the expected effects when the groups with focal onset epilepsy were compared t

Depression As a Consequence of Frontal Lobe Infarction: A Case Report.

Stroke is one of the most important and prevalent causes of morbidity and mortality around the world, with the most common site of vascular lesions being the frontal lobe. Usually, strokes present with motor or speech abnormalities. Depression or other psychiatric disturbances being the sole presenting feature of a stroke is a rare occurrence. Sudden onset of behavioral disturbances should alert the physician to investigate the patient for an underlying cause of his/her disorder. We present the case of a 65-year-old diabetic male who presented with sudden low mood and apathy that caused him se

The interpreter's brain during rest - Hyperconnectivity in the frontal lobe.

Language in its highest complexity is a unique human faculty with simultaneous translation being among the most demanding language task involving both linguistic and executive functions. In this context, bilingually grown up individuals as well as simultaneous interpreters (SIs) represent appropriate groups for studying expertise-related neural adaptations in the human brain. The present study was performed to examine if a domain-specific neural network activation pattern, constituted by brain regions involved in speech processing as well as cognitive control mechanisms can be detected during

Microcystic/Reticular Schwannoma of the Frontal Lobe: An Unusual Occurrence.

Schwannoma is a benign peripheral nerve sheath tumor that typically involves cranial nerves of the head and neck region. Intraparenchymal occurrence of this tumor is uncommon. Even rarer in this site is the microcystic/reticular pattern of schwannoma. This histologic variant, first described in 2008, has a predilection for visceral organs. Herein, we report the first case of microcystic/reticular schwannoma of the frontal lobe.

Thinner cortex in the frontal lobes in mentally disordered offenders.

Antisocial and violent behaviour have been associated with both structural and functional brain abnormalities in the frontal and the temporal lobes. The aim of the present study was to assess cortical thickness in offenders undergoing forensic psychiatric assessments, one group with psychopathy (PSY, n=7) and one group with autism spectrum disorder (ASD, n=7) compared to each other as well as to a reference group consisting of healthy non-criminal subjects (RG, n=12). A second aim was to assess correlation between scores on a psychopathy checklist (PCL-SV) and cortical thickness. Magnetic reso

The representation of information about faces in the temporal and frontal lobes.

Neurophysiological evidence is described showing that some neurons in the macaque inferior temporal visual cortex have responses that are invariant with respect to the position, size and view of faces and objects, and that these neurons show rapid processing and rapid learning. Which face or object is present is encoded using a distributed representation in which each neuron conveys independent information in its firing rate, with little information evident in the relative time of firing of different neurons. This ensemble encoding has the advantages of maximising the information in the repres

Neuropsychological and neuroimaging evidence for the involvement of the frontal lobes in depression.

The onset and reversibility of major depression is likely to be explained by diffuse neuromodulatory mechanisms rather than permanent abnormalities of connectivity and neurotransmission. However, the expression of mood state appears to involve fronto-striatal mechanisms. Lesions of the ventral frontal cortex give rise to profound modification of affect and behaviour not explained by effects on current intellectual function. These may represent the most extreme possible disturbances of emotional experience. Neuropsychological testing in major depression shows evidence of slowing in motor and co

[A case of adrenoleukodystrophy having progressed from the frontal lobes].

A 12-year-old boy was admitted to our hospital in May 1990. Since two years previously, he became restless and could not adapt himself to his new school mates and teacher. He came to refuse going to school, and his intellectual performance rapidly deteriorated, thereafter. During the following two years, he gradually became mutic and incontinent with dystonic involuntary movements, and was admitted to our hospital. Examination revealed melanoderma, mutism, dementia and grossly normal visual and auditory system except for bilateral optic atrophy. Volitional movements were severely limited becau

Neuroticism in temporal lobe epilepsy is associated with altered limbic-frontal lobe resting-state functional connectivity.

Neuroticism, a core personality trait characterized by a tendency towards experiencing negative affect, has been reported to be higher in people with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) compared with healthy individuals. Neuroticism is a known predictor of depression and anxiety, which also occur more frequently in people with TLE. The purpose of this study was to identify abnormalities in whole-brain resting-state functional connectivity in relation to neuroticism in people with TLE and to determine the degree of unique versus shared patterns of abnormal connectivity in relation to elevated symptoms

Transcortical mixed aphasia due to cerebral infarction in left inferior frontal lobe and temporo-parietal lobe.

We present a case of transcortical mixed aphasia caused by a cerebral embolism. A 77-year-old right-handed man was admitted to our hospital with speech disturbance and a right hemianopia. His spontaneous speech was remarkably reduced, and object naming, word fluency, comprehension, reading and writing were all severely disturbed. However, repetition of phonemes and sentences and reading aloud were fully preserved. Although magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed cerebral infarcts in the left frontal and parieto-occipital lobe which included the inferior frontal gyrus and angular gyrus, single

[Experience of transnasal endoscopic drainage of rhinosinusogenic frontal lobe abscess].

UNLABELLED: Intracranial complications in inflammatory diseases of the ear and nose are currently not frequent, but their lethality remains high. The choice of optimal, safe and effective access in surgical treatment of purulent-inflammatory intracranial complications remains a subject of discussions and is based on an individual approach, depends on the volume, localization and clinical condition of the patient. OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate a clinical case of successful drainage of the brain frontal lobe abscess using endoscopic transnasal access under the control of the navigation system. CON

Bilateral Central Retinal Vein Occlusion in Recurrent Frontal Lobe Tumor.

Systemic malignancy can induce hypercoagulation and can cause retinal vein occlusion (RVO). Although RVO has been reported in association with breast, renal, lung, prostate, and ovarian malignancies, it has not been reported in brain tumors. We are reporting a case of bilateral central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) associated with recurrent frontal lobe gliosarcoma. The association was established after ruling out all other systemic causes that can produce bilateral CRVO. The importance of this case report lies in the fact that, while evaluating bilateral CRVO cases, these rare associations sh

A Rare Case of Frontal Lobe Cavernous Malformation Mimicking Meningioma.

Cavernous venous malformations are benign vascular lesions that commonly occur in the brain parenchyma. These when present in the extra-axial or superficial cortical location can be mistaken for meningioma. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can help in the detection and easy differentiation of the two entities and thus aid in preoperative diagnosis and preventing intraoperative complications. We present a case of an 18-year-old male patient suffering from seizures, which was initially diagnosed as meningioma. However, detailed evaluation with MRI raised a possibility of cavernous malformation a

Semiology of hyperkinetic seizures of frontal versus temporal lobe origin.

Hyperkinetic seizures are usually associated with frontal lobe epilepsy. However, some patients have hyperkinetic seizures of temporal lobe origin. The semiological differences in hyperkinetic seizures between frontal and temporal lobe epilepsy have not been well studied. Here, we retrospectively assessed ictal semiology in order to distinguish between hyperkinetic seizures of frontal lobe origin and those of temporal lobe origin. We retrospectively reviewed data on patients who had undergone surgery for hyperkinetic seizures of temporal or frontal lobe origin and achieved favourable seizure o

Periventricular nodular heterotopia in 22q11.2 deletion and frontal lobe migration.

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to delineate the distribution of periventricular nodular heterotopia (PNH) in patients with 22q11.2 microdeletion syndrome (22q11.2DS) and place this in the context of other genetic forms of PNH. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed brain imaging and postmortem data available for adult patients with 22q11.2DS. We included only those with good quality MRI data (n = 29) in addition to two patients with PNH identified through postmortem studies. We also reviewed the pattern of PNH in all genetic conditions reported with this phenotype. RESULTS: Of the total seven patients (M
