Effects of increasing dietary rye levels on physicochemical characteristics of digesta and its impact on stomach emptying as well as the formation of 'doughballs' in stomachs of young pigs.

Despite quite similar contents of starch and crude fibre of wheat and rye, the unique non-starch-polysaccharide fraction of rye (e.g. high levels of arabinoxylans and fructans) might have an impact on physicochemical properties of the digesta in pigs. Forty pigs (age: 46.8 ± 5.28 days; bodyweight: 16.1 ± 4.13 kg) were divided into four treatment groups. During four weeks, the pigs received diets consisting of wheat and/or rye, barley, soy, potato protein and a mineral supplement. The sum of wheat and rye was 69% in all diets, whereby the compound feed of each group was characterized by a diffe

Genomic insights into dominant lactic acid bacteria in spoiled plant-based meat analogues.

The rapid growth of the plant-based meat analogues (PBMAs) market has sparked interest in its nutritional and environmental benefits, yet the microbial safety and spoilage dynamics of these products remain poorly characterized. In this study we isolated 60 lactic acid bacteria (LAB) from soy- (SBM) and pea-based meat (PBM) products stored at 4 °C or 22 °C until spoilage and performed whole-genome sequencing to characterize their phylogeny, metabolic capacity, and secondary-metabolite profiles. Phylogenomic analysis revealed that Latilactobacillus curvatus and Latilactobacillus sakei dominated

Protective Effect of Dietary Fiber on Blood Pressure and Vascular Dysfunction Through Regulation of Sympathetic Tone and Immune Response in Genetic Hypertension.

The mechanisms underlying the antihypertensive effect of dietary fibers remain poorly understood. This study investigates whether dietary fiber supplementation can prevent cardiovascular damage and high blood pressure in a genetic model of neurogenic hypertension. Six-week-old male spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) and their respective normotensive control, Wistar Kyoto rats (WKY), were divided into four groups: Untreated WKY, untreated SHR, SHR treated with resistant starch (SHR + RS), and SHR treated with inulin-type fructans (SHR + ITF) for 12 weeks. Additionally, a faecal microbiota tr

Outcome of a FODMAP restriction diet with subsequent blinded reintroduction in functional dyspepsia/postprandial distress syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies have shown increased duodenal mucosal permeability as a possible key player in the pathophysiology of functional dyspepsia (FD). Adverse reaction to nutrients is an important candidate underlying mechanism. Intragastric infusion of fermentable oligo-, di-, monosaccharides and polyols (FODMAPs) induced symptoms reminiscent of FD with a rapid onset. OBJECTIVE: We evaluated the effect of a low FODMAP diet (LFD) and individual FODMAP-triggers on symptom severity and duodenal mucosal permeability in FD. DESIGN: Patients with FD followed a 6-week LFD and filled out the v

Evidence-Based and Emerging Diet Recommendations for Small Bowel Disorders.

Diet plays a key role in the manifestation and severity of gastrointestinal symptoms, with increasing research interest on the role of diet in small bowel disorders. There are predominantly 3 small bowel conditions that have potential dietary interventions. Self-reported nonceliac gluten/wheat sensitivity is prevalent. Although gluten is believed to be a potential trigger for symptoms, other components of wheat may also be triggers, including fructans, alpha-amylase trypsin inhibitors, and wheat germ agglutinins. The diagnosis can be challenging, given the lack of validated biomarkers. A glute

Do ancient wheats contain less gluten than modern bread wheat, in favour of better health?

Popular media messaging has led to increased public perception that gluten-containing foods are bad for health. In parallel, 'ancient grains' have been promoted with claims that they contain less gluten. There appears to be no clear definition of 'ancient grains' but the term usually includes einkorn, emmer, spelt and Khorasan wheat. Gluten is present in all wheat grains and all can induce coeliac disease (CD) in genetically susceptible individuals. Analyses of 'ancient' and 'modern' wheats show that the protein content of modern bread wheat (Triticum aestivum) has decreased over time while th

Dietary Fiber, Atherosclerosis, and Cardiovascular Disease.

Observational studies have shown that dietary fiber intake is associated with decreased risk of cardiovascular disease. Dietary fiber is a non-digestible form of carbohydrates, due to the lack of the digestive enzyme in humans required to digest fiber. Dietary fibers and lignin are intrinsic to plants and are classified according to their water solubility properties as either soluble or insoluble fibers. Water-soluble fibers include pectin, gums, mucilage, fructans, and some resistant starches. They are present in some fruits, vegetables, oats, and barley. Soluble fibers have been shown to low

Levan-derived oligosaccharides (LOS) prime barley against fungal pathogens through asparagine metabolism.

Overuse of chemical pesticides motivates green disease control strategy. Levan-derived oligosaccharides (LOS) are immune elicitors, but its structure information and underlying regulatory mechanisms remain unclear. In this study, LOS produced from sucrose using LevB1SacB fusion enzyme, was purified by CSR-1Na resin, and characterized by HPLC, ATR-FTIR and 1D/2D NMR. Foliar LOS spraying (0.5‰) enhanced barley resistance to Rhizoctonia solani and Pyrenophora graminea, reducing necrotic area by 60.5% and 22.4%, but had little effect on the hemibiotrophic pathogen Bipolaris sorokiniana of spot blo

Prebiotic-mediated gastroprotective potentials of three bacterial levans through NF-κB-modulation and upregulation of systemic IL-17A.

This study aimed to investigate whether the gastroprotective effects of three types of bacterial levans are correlated with their prebiotic-associated anti-inflammatory/antioxidant potentials. Three levans designated as LevAE, LevP, and LevZ were prepared from bacterial honey isolates; purified, and characterized using TLC, NMR, and FTIR. The anti-inflammatory properties of levan preparations were assessed in LPS-stimulated RAW 264.7 cell lines, while their safety and gastroprotective potentials were assessed in Wistar rats. The three levans significantly reduced ulcer number (22.29-70.05 %) a

Microbial levan potentiates hepatic retention and antitumor activity of a PEGylated benzimidazole-curcumin nanocomplex through TLR2-FXR/FGF15-associated immunometabolic remodeling in experimental liver cancer.

Despite major advances in nanomedicine, therapeutic efficacy remains constrained by unfavorable host responses that influence nanotherapeutic retention, biodistribution, and activity. Biological strategies capable of enhancing nanomedicine performance through modulation of host-response pathways, rather than additional nanoparticle engineering, remain largely unexplored. Herein, we investigated whether a microbial levan produced by Weissella paramesenteroides could potentiate the therapeutic activity of a PEGylated β-cyclodextrin-capped benzimidazole-curcumin nanocomplex (BMPE-Cur) in an Ehrli

Biomass allocation and seasonal non-structural carbohydrate dynamics do not explain the success of tall forbs in short alpine grassland.

The majority of alpine plants are of small stature. Through their small size alpine plants are decoupled from the free atmospheric circulation and accumulate solar heat. However, a few alpine species do not follow that "rule" and protrude with their aboveground structures from the microclimatic shelter of the main canopy boundary layer. We aim at explaining the phenomenon of being tall by exploring the biomass production and carbon relations of four pairs of small and tall phylogenetically related taxa in alpine grassland. We compared species and stature-specific biomass allocation, shifts in

MDG-1, a Potential Regulator of PPARα and PPARγ, Ameliorates Dyslipidemia in Mice.

Hyperlipidemia is a serious epidemic disease caused by lipid metabolism disorder, which is harmful to human health. MDG-1, a β-d-fructan polysaccharide extracted from Ophiopogon japonicus, has been shown to improve abnormal blood lipid levels and alleviate diabetes. However, the underlying mechanism on hyperlipidemia is largely unknown. In this study, male C57BL/6 mice were randomly separated into three groups, respectively: low-fat diet (Con), high-fat diet (HFD), and high-fat diet plus 5‰ MDG-1 (HFD + MDG-1). Body weight was measured and the serum lipid levels were analyzed. Using gene micro

Flower opening and closure: a review.

Flower opening and closure are traits of a reproductive syndrome, as it allows pollen removal and/or pollination. Various types of opening can be distinguished such as nocturnal and diurnal and single or repetitive. Opening is generally due to cell expansion. Osmotic solute levels increase by the conversion of polysaccharides (starch or fructan) to monosaccharides, and/or the uptake of sugars from the apoplast. Repeated opening and closure movements are often brought about by differential elongation. In tulip petals, for example, the upper and lower sides of the mesophyll exhibit a 10 degrees

Interplay of probiotics, prebiotics, synbiotics and postbiotics: a review of their therapeutic potential for gastrointestinal inflammation.

Gastrointestinal inflammation is a multifaceted condition deeply connected to the gut microbiota. The prebiotics, probiotics, synbiotics and their metabolites, termed postbiotics, have been explored extensively in the past as a novel approach in managing inflammatory bowel disorders. Prebiotics, probiotics, and postbiotics derived from food sources play crucial roles in modulating the gut microbiota and significantly impact gastrointestinal inflammation. Prebiotics are non-digestible, selectively fermented dietary fibers found in foods such as inulin-type fructans and galacto-oligosaccharides

Modulation of the TGF-β/Smad Signaling Pathway by a Bioactive Oxidized Polygonati Rhizoma Polysaccharide Crosslinked Chitosan Hydrogel as Therapeutic Carrier for Parkinson's Disease Treatment.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is characterized by progressive dopaminergic neuron loss compounded by oxidative stress and neuroinflammation within a self-perpetuating pathological brain microenvironment. Here, we report a bioactive injectable self-healing hydrogel (COPRP) constructed by crosslinking oxidized Polygonati rhizoma polysaccharide (OPRP) with carboxymethyl chitosan via dynamic Schiff base linkages. OPRP is structurally identified as an inulin neoseries-type fructan with relevance to TGF-β/Smad pathway regulation. Without levodopa loading, COPRP reduced ROS accumulation and M1-associated

Structure and protection of Cichorium glandulosum polysaccharides against sarcopenic obesity through activating mitophagy via butyrate-GPR43-AMPK pathway.

Sarcopenic obesity (SO) is a major complication of type 2 diabetes with limited therapeutic options. This study characterized CGP-A, a novel branched fructan (6.722 kDa) from Cichorium glandulosum. Its backbone consists of →1)-β-D-Fruf-(2→ and →6)-α-D-Glcp-(1→ residues, interspersed with →1,6)-β-D-Fruf-(2→ branching points. The side chains consist of terminal β-D-Fruf-(2→ units attached to the C-6 position of the fructofuranosyl residues in the backbone. In db/db mice, CGP-A dose-dependently ameliorated insulin resistance, hepatic steatosis, muscle loss and intestinal barrier dysfunction. Impo

Dietary inulin affects the expression of intestinal enterocyte iron transporters, receptors and storage protein and alters the microbiota in the pig intestine.

Inulin, a linear beta fructan, is present in a variety of plants including chicory root and wheat. It exhibits prebiotic properties and has been shown to enhance mineral absorption and increase beneficial bacteria in the colon. The aim of the present study was to assess the effect of dietary inulin on the gene expression of selected intestinal Fe transporters and binding proteins. Anaemic piglets at age 5 weeks were allocated to a standard maize-soya diet (control) or the same diet supplemented with inulin at a level of 4 %. After 6 weeks, the animals were killed and caecum contents and sectio
