Two mechanisms are discussed regarding etiology and pathogenesis: the direct mechanism by radioeffect on teeth, lying in irradiation field, and the indirect mechanism by alteration of the secretion from salivary glands (hypo- and dyssalivation, xerostomia), alteration of the physiological mouth-flora (dominance of Streptococcus mutans) and deficient mouth and tooth hygiene by the patients. Clinically four types of radiogenic tooth defects are discerned: the superficial carious destruction of the necks of the teeth, the change of the tooth-colour to brown-black, an early gradual fuse of the edg

Introduction Dental implants are widely used to replace missing teeth; however, the biomechanical performance of implant-supported restorations may be influenced by the prosthesis retention type, restorative material, and direction of occlusal loading. Unfavorable stress distribution may lead to biological and mechanical complications, affecting long-term implant success. The present study aimed to evaluate and compare the stress distribution patterns in cement-retained and screw-retained implant-supported restorations fabricated with porcelain-fused-to-metal and zirconia crowns under axial an

Dental anomalies may occur both in primary and permanent dentitions. Abnormalities in tooth size, shape, and structure result from disturbances during the morphodifferentiation stage of development. They are observed frequently during routine dental examinations and might be associated with a syndrome. Dentists must be familiar with the prevalence of such anomalies, as early diagnosis can prevent complications such as compromised aesthetics, space loss, midline shift, and carious exposure. This article describes a rare presentation of bilaterally fused permanent mandibular central and lateral

A new glass-ceramic material, IPS Empress 2, is revolutionizing esthetic restorative dentistry by allowing metal-free, three-unit bridge construction in anterior and premolar single-pontic areas. The case discussed in this article illustrates the material's application in the dual-arch restoration of a young woman with congenitally missing teeth. The material was used as an alternative to single-tooth implant restorations to place two maxillary three-unit bridges, one mandibular three-unit bridge, and two mandibular porcelain veneers. IPS Empress 2 provides an esthetic alternative to porcelain

The study of the connection between the teeth and the jaw is important for understanding the palaeobiology of vertebrates, but inconsistent terminology and incomplete sampling have made it difficult to assess the evolutionary significance of some of the related characters. Among archosauromorphs, tooth attachment in dinosaurs and crocodylians is nearly identical to that of mammals in featuring a ligamentous connection (gomphosis), whereas closely related forms appear to have teeth fused to the jaws (ankylosis), as in most other amniotes. Hence, studying tooth attachment of stem-archosaurs is p

PURPOSE: In this study, we propose a 3D printing-aided method for manufacturing complete dentures and evaluate its accuracy of artificial tooth positioning.
METHODS: Complete dentures were designed and 3D printed and put on a plaster cast; and pack and press technique was used to fabricate the final denture during which artificial teeth were inserted in the teeth holes formed by the printed denture. In this study, fused deposition moulding (FDM) and stereolithography (SLA) techniques were used to fabricate complete dentures (10 pairs of maxillary and mandibular dentures each). After 3D scanni

Class II malocclusion in dogs is a skeletal abnormality characterized by mandibular distoclusion that can result in traumatic occlusion and compromised oral health. While associated soft tissue trauma is well recognized, the prevalence of concurrent congenital and developmental dental anomalies in affected dogs has not been systematically evaluated. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of dental anomalies in dogs with class II malocclusion and compare findings to dogs with normal occlusion. Medical records from three veterinary dentistry referral centers were retrospectively r

Background and Clinical Significance: Dental implants are widely used; however, tooth extraction often results in alveolar bone loss and gingival recession, necessitating bone and connective tissue reconstruction, especially in the esthetic anterior regions. To address these issues, implants are occasionally connected to adjacent teeth, but this remains controversial, as complications (e.g., intrusion of natural teeth) have been observed. This report demonstrates the long-term success of implants replaced after removing maxillary bilateral central incisors and connecting them to lateral inciso

Adenomatoid odontogenic tumour (AOT) is a rare benign odontogenic tumour characterized by a progressively slow growing pattern and symptomless behavior. The differential diagnosis between AOT and other odontogenic tumours, such as ameloblastoma, should be well conducted in order to avoid extensive ablative surgery. The present case report is of a 27 year old female who reported with a chief complaint of mild intermittent pain and a swelling which was gradually increasing in size, on the left mid-facial region since 6 months. Radiographic Investigations revealed a round uni-locular radiolucent

BMP signaling plays crucial roles in the development of many organs, including the tooth. Equally important is BMP signaling homeostasis, as demonstrated by multiple organ defects in mice lacking the extracellular BMP antagonist Noggin. Here, we show that Noggin is initially expressed in the maxillary mesenchyme adjunct to the upper incisor at the initiation stage, and then in the developing teeth, including incisors and molars, from the bud stage. Noggin mutants develop normal molars and mandibular incisors, but form a single, medially located upper incisor that is arrested at the late bud st

BACKGROUND Amelogenesis imperfecta is a rare condition with a genetic predisposition that impacts enamel production, mineralization, or maturation. This condition impacts the affected individual's dental aesthetics, functionality, and emotional health. A multidisciplinary approach is recommended for effective management and a positive prognosis for dental treatment. CASE REPORT This case involves a 27-year-old woman diagnosed with amelogenesis imperfecta, characterized by extensive enamel defects, carious lesions, partial tooth loss, and significant aesthetic issues. The patient expressed diss

BACKGROUND: Rehabilitation of the esthetic zone is one of the greatest challenges in contemporary prosthodontics. In addition to tooth loss, defects of the alveolar ridge and surrounding soft tissues often compromise functional and esthetic outcomes. When implant therapy is contraindicated or not feasible, treatment should be tailored to the patient's individual needs. The aim of this case report was to present the prosthetic rehabilitation of a complex maxillary defect and missing teeth in the esthetic zone using a long-span fixed dental prosthesis (FDP).
CASE REPORT: A 51-year-old female pa

Skulls from 214 Eastern Pacific harbour seals (Phoca vitulina richardii) were examined macroscopically according to predefined criteria. The museum specimens were acquired from strandings along the west coast of the USA between 1909 and 2014. Ninety-eight skulls (45.8%) were from male animals, 108 (50.5%) from female animals and eight (3.7%) from animals of unknown sex. Their age varied from neonate to adult, with 101 adult animals (47.2%), 93 juvenile animals (43.5%) and 20 neonatal animals (9.3%). The majority of teeth were available for examination (90.0%); 7.5% of teeth were absent artefac

Placentas are temporary organs needed to support a developing embryo and arise from both embryonic and maternal tissues. Calcifications of tissues outside of bone and teeth mineralization are often a sign of tissue damage and impaired organ function. Placental calcifications have been described previously in the literature and usually increase in normal pregnancies as the placenta ages, but they have also been associated with the potential for fetal distress. This study utilized 139 placental tissues from singleton control placentas (51), fused twin placentas (48), and non-fused twin placentas

Teeth are anchored in the jaw in a highly variable manner across vertebrates. In mammals and crocodiles, the teeth are cushioned inside bony sockets by periodontal ligaments, whereas most squamate reptiles have teeth firmly attached to the jawbone. Here, we analyzed the development of the attachment tissue in the veiled chameleon, a species with firm acrodont tooth attachment, to reveal the cellular processes establishing ankylosis and to determine the cell types contributing to the attachment. The tooth-bearing bones formed pedicles with edges fusing to the dentine via an attachment tissue pr

BACKGROUND/AIM: There is a lack of evidence regarding the radiological characteristics of a periapical radiolucency (PRL) fusion with the nasopalatine canal (NPC) following dentoalveolar trauma. The aim of this study was to assess the NPC enlargement resulting from fusion with a PRL and its relationship with the surrounding anatomical structures.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 100 patients was retrospectively recruited and divided into two groups: case group and control group. The case group consisted of 50 cone-beam computed tomography scans of the maxilla of patients (32 males, 18 females

A severe mandibular hypoplasia and microstomy with intraoral anomalies including hypoglossia, fused gums, persistence of buccopharyngeal membrane, and laryngeal hypoplasia were noted in a female newborn with the dysgnathia complex (DC). Additionally, our proposita also presented natal teeth as a probably new finding. These clinical manifestations overlapped with those of the fourth report of hypomandibular faciocranial syndrome (HFS) (31), and given that both lack for craniosynostosis (pathognomonic of HFS), we considered that both represent a subtype of DC proposed as DC sine holoprosencephal

AIM: To describe the management of the palato-mesiobuccal (PMB) canal in maxillary second molars with fused roots using conventional techniques.
SUMMARY: Root canal treatment success hinges upon effectively addressing the intricate and variable anatomy of molar teeth. Failure to do so can lead to persistent infections and treatment failure. Recent advancements in imaging technologies have provided unparalleled insights into dental anatomy, especially in molars. Among these discoveries is the PMB canal, a unique anatomical variant recently reported for the first time in Endodontic literature.

Congenital cleft of the secondary palate occurs when there is failure of one or both maxillary processes to fuse with the nasal septum during embryonic development. Palatal cleft severity can range from a simple focal fissure of the caudal soft palate to full-thickness defects of varied widths involving the entire soft and hard palate. A novel staged medially positioned single mucoperiosteal flap technique in 4 canine patients is reported. This flap technique is based on the major palatine and infraorbital arteries with strategic extractions of maxillary teeth and placement of allograft membra
