Comparative analysis of intestinal bacteria among venom secretion and non-secrection snakes.

To further investigate the bacterial community and identify the bacterial biomarkers between venom secretion and non-venom secretion snakes, 50 intestinal samples (25 large intestine, 25 small intestine) were obtained from 29 snakes (13 gut samples from Deinagkistrodon, 26 from Naja and 11 from Ptyas mucosa). 16S rDNA high-throughput sequencing results showed that 29 bacterial phyla, 545 bacterial genera, and 1,725 OTUs (operational taxonomic units) were identified in these samples. OTU numbers and the Ace, Chao, Shannon, and Simpson indexes were very similar among the three breeds of snakes i

Oral microbiome and health.

The oral microbiome is diverse in its composition due to continuous contact of oral cavity with the external environment. Temperatures, diet, pH, feeding habits are important factors that contribute in the establishment of oral microbiome. Both culture dependent and culture independent approaches have been employed in the analysis of oral microbiome. Gene-based methods like PCR amplification techniques, random amplicon cloning, PCR-RELP, T-RELP, DGGE and DNA microarray analysis have been applied to increase oral microbiome related knowledge. Studies revealed that microbes from the phyla Firmic

Gut microbiota and NLRP3 inflammasome activation in hemodialysis patients: exploring the link with systemic inflammation.

BACKGROUND: The Nod-Like Receptor Pyrin domain-containing 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome is a critical sensor of bacterial signals and metabolites, initiating an inflammatory response. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is often accompanied by systemic inflammation, which can be involved with gut dysbiosis. Considering this interplay, we aimed to explore the potential association between NLRP3 inflammasome expression and gut microbiota in CKD patients undergoing hemodialysis (HD). METHODS AND RESULTS: This research comprises a cross-sectional pilot study involving twelve HD patients [59.2 ± 13.4 years, six

Supragingival Plaque Microbial Community Analysis of Children with Halitosis.

As one of the most complex human-associated microbial habitats, the oral cavity harbors hundreds of bacteria. Halitosis is a prevalent oral condition that is typically caused by bacteria. The aim of this study was to analyze the microbial communities and predict functional profiles in supragingival plaque from healthy individuals and those with halitosis. Ten preschool children were enrolled in this study; five with halitosis and five without. Supragingival plaque was isolated from each participant and 16S rRNA gene pyrosequencing was used to identify the microbes present. Samples were primari

Activity of pefloxacin and thirteen other antimicrobial agents in vitro against isolates from hospital and genitourinary infections.

The in-vitro activity of the quinolone derivative pefloxacin was compared with that of three other quinolones, five beta-lactam antibiotics and three aminoglycosides against 367 isolates from hospital patients and from out-patients with genitourinary infections. MIC90 of pefloxacin and norfloxacin for each strain was the same; that of ciprofloxacin was a little lower. All strains except Escherichia coli were resistant to nalidixic acid. Pefloxacin was highly active against Staphylococcus aureus (39 strains; MIC90 1.0 mg/l) and most strains of coagulase-negative staphylococci (56; 4 mg/l), Esch

Evaluation of gastrointestinal and fecal microbial communities as markers of liver abscess risk in beef feedlot cattle.

Liver abscesses (LAs) are a prevalent and costly issue in the beef industry. Microbial translocation from the gastrointestinal tract is believed to be the underlying cause of LAs. However, little is understood about the factors that permit the passage of bacteria into the portal bloodstream, or where in the gastrointestinal tract this translocation is likely to occur. This study used 16S rRNA gene sequencing to characterize the microbial community composition of the rumen, small intestine, large intestine, and feces of steers with edible and abscessed livers of varying severity. The small inte

Microbiota dysbiosis and myasthenia gravis: Do all roads lead to Rome?

Dysregulated immune system with a failure to recognize self from non-self-antigens is one of the common pathogeneses seen in autoimmune diseases. The complex interplay of genetic and environmental factors is important for the occurrence and development of the disease. Among the environmental factors, disturbed gut microbiota (gut dysbiosis) has recently attracted particular attention, especially with advancement in human microbiome research. Although the alterations in microbiota have been seen in various autoimmune diseases, including those of nervous system, there is paucity of information o
