Galectins are a family of endogenous lectins with β-galactosides affinity, playing significant roles in the innate immunity of vertebrates and invertebrates. In this report, a new galectin-9 cDNA was identified and characterized in large yellow croaker Larimichthys crocea (designated as LcGal-9). The complete cDNA sequence of LcGal-9 was 1795 bp, with an open reading frame (ORF) of 1032 bp encoding 343 amino acids. The putative LcGal-9 protein contained two carbohydrate recognition domains (CRDs) connected by a linker peptide, with each carrying two conserved β-galactoside binding motifs H-NPR

Galectin-3, a β-galactoside-binding lectin, is a driver and regulator of inflammation and fibrosis, and its levels are elevated in some heart and lung diseases. It also serves as a biomarker for the risk and severity of some forms of heart failure and, potentially, for various other pathological conditions. These observations make galectin-3 a promising potential therapeutic target. Both genetic and pharmacological inhibition of galectin-3 have been shown to ameliorate renal dysfunction and exert protective effects against liver fibrosis in animal models. Several galectin-3 inhibitors have bee

Oxidative stress leads to various diseases, including diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, neurodegenerative diseases, and even cancer. The dietary flavonol glycoside, hyperoside (quercetin-3-O-galactoside), exerts health benefits by preventing oxidative damage. To further understand its antioxidative defence mechanisms, we systemically investigated the regulation of hyperoside on oxidative damage induced by hydrogen peroxide, carbon tetrachloride, and cadmium in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Hyperoside significantly increased cell viability, decreased lipid peroxidation, and lowered intracellular r

The presence and distribution of galectin-3, a beta-galactoside-binding protein, in boar testis and epididymis was studied. Western blot analysis detected galectin-3 in boar testis and epididymis. In particular, intense galectin-3 immunoreaction was seen in the tail of the epididymis, while it was moderate in the head and body. Galectin-3 immunolabelling was detected in the connective tissues of the testis. In the testis, galectin-3 was detected in some cells (presumably peritubular myoid cells), but not in Leydig cells or the cells of the seminiferous tubules. In the epididymis, the galectin-

Galectin-3, a member of beta-galactoside-binding lectins, is expressed and secreted by a variety of cell types including human intestinal epithelial cells. The presence of anti-galectin-3 antibody in the sera of patients was analyzed by immunoblotting using recombinant human galectin-3. A substantially higher percentage of sera from Crohn's disease patients contained anti-galectin-3 IgG autoantibodies than from patients with ulcerative colitis, primary biliary cirrhosis, or autoimmune hepatitis and of apparently healthy control volunteers. In Crohn's disease patients the titer of autoantibodie

A comparison was made between three different strategies for measuring beta-nerve growth factor (NGF) by fluorometric enzyme immunoassay. The substrate used was 4-methylumbelliferyl-beta-galactoside and the enzyme reaction was followed in a Microfluor plate reader (Dynatech). After optimizing incubation times, concentrations, buffers, pH, and washings, a primary anti-NGF antibody directly conjugated to beta-galactosidase gave the best detection limit (2 X 10(-17) M) of purified mouse NGF (Mr 26,000) in a two-site sandwich assay. Galectins are a family of proteins that bind specifically to β-galactosides. Their importance in innate immunity of mammals has been well-documented. However, the systematic identification and characterization of galectin gene family remain limited in teleost. In this study, we identified 13 galectin genes (lgals2, lgals2a, lgals2b, lgals3, lgals3a, lgals3b, lgals4, lgals8, lgals8a, lgals9, grp, grp-b, grp-c) from Paralichthys olivaceus genome and analyzed their tissue expressions and expressions in response to Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacterial infections in mucosal tissues (gills, int

The galectin family comprises evolutionarily conserved soluble animal lectins. Recently, a new member of this family was described: galectin-like 2 (LGALSL2). This protein consists of a globular domain that shares the structural organization of galectin carbohydrate recognition domains, but lacks some of the amino acids necessary for binding to β-galactosides. Although LGALSL2 is widespread in jawed vertebrates, this protein is absent in mammals. The amino acid sequence is highly conserved from cartilaginous fish to birds. The focus of this conservation is on the convex face of the protein, wh

Background/Objectives: A high-fat diet (HFD) promotes hepatic steatosis, inflammation, and systemic metabolic imbalance. Notably, HFDs can affect the gut-liver axis and adipose tissue homeostasis. Galectin-3 (Gal-3) binds to β-galactosides and plays regulatory roles in the gut-liver axis, connecting metabolic stress with inflammation and tissue remodelling. The objective of this study was to investigate whether Gal-3 affects the gut-liver axis and adipose tissue biology after HFD supplementation. Methods: Six-week-old C57BL/6 mice were randomly divided into either wild-type (Lgals3+/+) or knoc

Tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKI) against Bcr-Abl are the first-line therapeutics for chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML). However, the resistance to Bcr-Abl TKIs is induced in leukemic cells not only by loss of sensitivity to TKIs through Bcr-Abl-related molecular mechanisms but also by loss of addiction to Bcr-Abl TK activity by acquiring Bcr-Abl-unrelated additional oncogenic mutations. Therefore, the identification of an additional therapeutic target has been anticipated for achievement of a complete cure and to overcome resistance to treatment. We here showed that modified human Galectin-9

BACKGROUND: Cell surface glycoligands and circulating glycoproteins are believed to contribute to the pathogenesis of acute coronary syndromes (ACS) through cell aggregation/adhesion mechanisms. To characterize the glycobiological status of blood cells from patients with ACS, we used an advanced lectin-mediated aggregation technique allowing for detection of not only conventional lectin-induced cell aggregates but also their fraction resistant to haptenic/inhibitory sugars.
METHODS: Peripheral blood samples were obtained from 24 patients with acute myocardial infarction or unstable angina and

Anesthetic management of patients with mucopolysaccharidoses is well known. The anesthetic implications of patients with galactosialidosis may be similar to those with other well documented mucopolysaccharidoses, but no cases have been reported in the anesthesia-related literature. We present a case describing anesthetic management of a patient with galactosialidosis undergoing cervical spine surgery.

Sialyltransferase gene expression is altered in several cancers, including examples in the cervix. Transcriptional regulation of the responsible genes depends on different promoters. We aimed to determine the association of single-nucleotide polymorphisms in the B3 promoter of the ST3GAL4 gene and the P1 promoter of the ST6GAL1 gene with cervical premalignant lesions or cervical cancer. A blood sample and/or cervical scrapes were obtained from 104 women with normal cytology, 154 with premalignant lesions and 100 with cervical cancer. We also included 119 blood samples of random donors. The pol

The inhibition of the alpha-2,6-sialyltransferase from rat liver, the alpha-2,3-sialyltransferase from porcine submandibular gland and of the galactosyltransferase from human milk were studied using monosaccharide-, nucleoside- and nucleotide-derivatives of their naturally occurring donor substrates cytidine 5'-monophosphate-N-acetylneuraminic acid and uridine 5'-diphosphate-galactose, respectively. Only the corresponding nucleosides/nucleotides showed inhibitory activity. Periodate oxidation of CMP or CMP-Neu5Ac and of UMP or UDP-Gal led to reduced inhibitory efficiency with the respective tr

Galectins, a family of highly conserved β-galactoside-binding proteins, favor tumor progression by modulating multiple hallmarks of cancer. Galectin-1 (GAL1), a prototype member of this family, plays essential roles in both tumor immunosuppression and angiogenesis through interactions with glycosylated receptors on the surface of immune and vascular cells. Targeting GAL1 inhibits tumor growth and metastasis by enhancing antitumor immunity and preventing aberrant angiogenesis in several experimental models. Therefore, strategies aimed at blocking this multifunctional glycan-binding protein (GBP

Vaccinium meridionale Swartz (agraz) is a wild Andean berry with a rich phytochemical profile, but evidence remains fragmented and methodologically heterogeneous, limiting its technological and nutraceutical use. This systematic review synthesized studies published between 2009 and 2026 on its phytochemical composition, extraction technologies, and biological effects. Following PRISMA guidelines, 43 primary studies were included from 163 identified records. Agraz is mainly characterized by cyanidin-3-O-galactoside, hydroxycinnamic acids, flavonols, A- and B-type procyanidins, vitamin C, and pr

The global incidence of metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) has risen sharply. This condition is strongly associated with the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD), but how MAFLD affects the development and progression of CVD, particularly concerning vascular calcification, remains unclear. Herein, extracellular vesicles (EVs) are identified from steatotic hepatocytes as a trigger that accelerated the progression of both vascular intimal and medial calcification. Steatotic hepatocytes are found to release more EVs, which are able to reach the vascular tissue, be taken u
