Clinicians should now be fully aware of this intriguing condition of GIPP. The condition is characterized by pubertal sex steroid concentrations and gametogenesis in the presence of prepubertal or suppressed gonadotrophins. In patients with MPP especially without a family history, one should exclude the possibility of pseudoprecocious puberty due to premature production of sex steroids without pituitary gonadotrophins resulting from a primary disorder of the gonad or adrenal gland or to autonomous secretion of gonadotrophin by a tumor. Similarly in patients with recurrent ovarian cyst formatio

An intriguing outcome of hybridisation is the emergence of clonally and hemiclonally reproducing hybrids, that can sustain, reproduce, and lead to the emergence of polyploid forms. However, the maintenance of diploid and polyploid hybrid complexes in natural populations remains unresolved. We selected water frogs from the Pelophylax esculentus complex to study how diploid and triploid hybrids, which reproduce hemiclonally via hybridogenesis, are maintained in natural populations. During gametogenesis in diploid hybrids, one of the parental genomes is eliminated, and the remaining genome is end

Stem cell factor (SCF) is an essential cytokine during development and is necessary for gametogenesis, hematopoiesis, mast cell development, stem cell function, and melanogenesis. Here, we measure SCF concentration and distribution in adult humans and mice using gene expression analysis, tissue staining, and organ protein lysates. We demonstrate continued SCF expression in many cell types and tissues into adulthood. Tissues with high expression in adult humans included stomach, spleen, kidney, lung, and pancreas. In mice, we found high SCF expression in the esophagus, ovary, uterus, kidney, an

Aberrant expression of imprinted genes results in imprinting disorders (IDs). Differentially methylated regions (DMRs) reveal parental-origin-specific DNA methylation on CpGs and regulate the expression of the imprinted genes. One etiology of IDs is epimutation (epi-IDs) induced by some error in the establishment or maintenance of methylation imprint during the processes of gametogenesis, fertilization, or early embryonic development. Therefore, it has been a concern that assisted reproductive technologies (ART) increase the risk for the development of IDs, particularly epi-IDs. We review the

Exosomes are nano-sized structures that are found in semen, epididymal -fluid, endometrium, as well as in follicular fluid. They are responsible for transporting bioactive cargo- proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids. Exosomes have been proven to influence processes in both female and male reproductive systems, including gametogenesis, acrosomal reaction, sperm capacitation, and embryo implantation in the endometrium. Exosomes are made of the same particles as the cells they come from and are secreted by normal and pathological cells. Therefore, exosomes can reflect the physiological state of ce

In the avian species, germline chimera production could be possible by transfer of donor germ cells into the blood vessel of recipient embryos. This study was conducted to establish an efficient transfer system of chicken gonadal primordial germ cells (gPGCs) for producing the chimeras having a high capacity of germline transmission. Gonadal PGCs retrieved from 5.5-day-old embryos (stage 28) of Korean Ogol chicken (KOC with i/i gene) were transferred into the dorsal aorta of 2.5-day-old embryos (stage 17) of White Leghorn chicken (WL with I/I gene). Prospective evaluations of whether culture d

Epigenetics, defined as the regulatory mechanisms that modulate genetic information flow without altering the DNA sequence, plays a crucial role in development, aging, and disease. This review explores the key epigenetic mechanisms-DNA methylation, histone modifications, chromatin remodeling, and non-coding RNAs-and their contributions to cellular differentiation, tissue homeostasis, and disease progression. We focus on their roles in gametogenesis, early development, stem cell reprogramming, and aging, highlighting how epigenetic alterations influence health and disease. The review also discu

The development of bioprosthetic ovaries using advanced biofabrication and 3D bioprinting technologies has achieved significant attention in recent years. This work begins with an analysis of ovarian anatomy and physiology, emphasizing the critical structural and functional components that must be replicated for an effective engineered in vitro model. It further outlines the principles and capabilities of 3D bioprinting, with a focus on the customization of printing modalities and bioinks to closely mimic native ovarian tissue. Given the ovary's dual functions in gametogenesis and endocrine si

Porcine stem cell research has advanced considerably over the past decade, driven by the dual promise of biomedical modeling and agricultural innovation. This review provides a comprehensive synthesis of recent progress in the isolation, characterization, and directed differentiation of major porcine stem cell types, including embryonic stem cells (pESCs), induced pluripotent stem cells (piPSCs), germline stem cells (pGSCs, spermatogonial stem cells and the controversially debated female germline stem cells), and various adult stem cell populations (e.g., muscle satellite cells, adipose-derive

Histones are the building units of nucleosomes, which constitute chromatin. Histone post-translational modifications (PTMs) play an essential role in epigenetic gene regulation. The Plasmodium falciparum genome encodes canonical and variant histones and a collection of conserved enzymes for histone PTMs and chromatin remodeling. Herein, we profiled the P. falciparum histone PTMs during the development of gametocytes, the obligatory stage for parasite transmission. Mass spectrometric analysis of histones extracted from the early, middle, and late stages of gametocytes identified 457 unique hist

Gametophytic development in Arabidopsis depends on nutrients and cell wall materials from sporophytic cells. However, it is not clear whether hormones and signaling molecules from sporophytic tissues are also required for gametophytic development. Herein, we show that auxin produced by the flavin monooxygenases YUC2 and YUC6 in the sporophytic microsporocytes is essential for early stages of pollen development. The first asymmetric mitotic division (PMI) of haploid microspores is the earliest event in male gametophyte development. Microspore development in yuc2yuc6 double mutants arrests befor

This month's Views and Reviews opens a window to the future. What lies on the horizon for assisted reproduction and gamete/embryo biology? We focus on in vitro gametogenesis and germline editing. Czukiewska et al. reviewed the current state of the science of female germ cell development. This well-supported section recognizes the progress made and the unique aspect of oogenesis that makes full maturation and reproductive capacity difficult. Amato et al. addressed germline editing and the potential capacity to prevent transmission of monogenic diseases with significant morbidity and mortality t

There is an increasing recognition that the endocannabinoid system is the crucial cytokine-hormone system regulating early human pregnancy. The synchronous development of the fertilized embryo and the endometrium to ensure timely implantation has been shown to be one of the pivotal steps to successful implantation. This development is thought to be regulated by a finely balanced relationship between various components of the endocannabinoid system in the endometrium, the embryo and the Fallopian tube. In addition, this system has also been shown to be involved in the regulation of the developm

Pregnancy is an immunological compromise geared towards inducing maternal immunopermissiveness that promotes tolerance of the foetal allograft. This process is mediated by an extensive array of cytokines, which operate in a highly coordinated and complex network system at both local (compartmentalized) and systemic levels. These glycoproteins also play an active role in gametogenesis and act as embryotrophins in the maternal tract. In addition to being involved in the seminal plasma-induced priming of the uterus for the establishment of pregnancy, they mediate the embryo-maternal paracrine dia

Interspecific hybridization between closely related species is commonly associated with decreased fertility or viability of F1 hybrids. Thus, in mouse interspecific hybrids, several different hybrid sterility genes that impair gametogenesis of the male hybrids have been described. We describe a novel effect in hybrids between different mouse species that manifests itself in abnormal growth of the placenta. Opposite phenotypes, that is, placental hypotrophy versus hypertrophy, are observed in reciprocal crosses and backcrosses. The severity of the phenotype, which is mainly caused by abnormal d

In summary, recent light microscopic studies, complemented by immunocytochemical and cytogenetic techniques, have demonstrated profound differences in the etiology, morphology, and clinical behavior of various forms of GTD. In addition, in vitro studies combined with immunohistochemical and ultrastructural analysis of normal trophoblast have provided new insight into the factors that coordinate the interactions of trophoblastic and maternal cells at the implantation site and have elucidated some of the mechanisms that regulate normal trophoblastic invasion. Analysis of the studies of normal an

BACKGROUND: Schistosomiasis is one of the most common parasitic diseases affecting millions of humans and animals worldwide. Understanding the signal transduction pathways and the molecular basis of reproductive regulation in schistosomes is critically important for developing new strategies for preventing and treating these infections. Syk kinases regulate the proliferation, differentiation, morphogenesis, and survival of various types of cells and have been identified in invertebrates. Tyrosine kinase 4 (TK4), a member of the Syk kinase family, plays a pivotal role in gametogenesis in S. man

BACKGROUND: Studies on air pollution and outcomes of in vitro fertilization (IVF) have focused on couples undergoing autologous IVF, in which it is challenging to disentangle maternal and paternal exposures during gametogenesis. We sought to evaluate the independent associations between air pollution exposure during oogenesis and spermatogenesis on fertilization and embryo quality in non-identified donor oocyte IVF cycles.
METHODS: Our study included 500 oocyte donors and 915 male recipient partners who contributed 1,095 oocyte thaw cycles (2008-2019). Daily ambient air pollutant exposure was

Mitochondria, as the central hub of cellular energy metabolism and a critical regulator of signaling pathways, play indispensable roles in spermatogenesis and sperm function. In recent years, the mechanisms by which RNA-binding proteins regulate reproductive development and gametogenesis have emerged as a focal point in mitochondrial biology. Here, we review the latest progresses on the role of mitochondrial translation and its associated ribosomal regulation in sperm formation and activation. In Caenorhabditis elegans, the RNA-binding protein complex AMG-1/SLRP-1 modulates key processes of sp

In malaria parasites, although post-translational modification of proteins with N-. O-, and C-glycosidic bond-linked glycans is limited, it is confined to relatively fewer proteins in which the glycans are present at significant levels and may have important functions. Furthermore, several proteins are modified with glycosylphosphatidylinositols (GPIs) which represent the predominant glycan synthesized by parasites. Modification of proteins with GPIs is obligatory for parasite survival as GPI-anchored proteins (GPI-APs) play essential roles in all life cycle stages of the parasites, including
