The evaluation of the role of CCK in the opioid modulation of the motility of the gastrointestinal tract in sheep.

The participation of central cholecystokinin-8 (CCK-8) receptors in the modulatory effect of D-Ala2, N-Me-Phe4, Gly5-ol enkephalin (DAGO), a selective mu-opioid receptor agonist, on the spike burst activity of the gastrointestinal tract (rumen, reticulum, antrum, duodenum, colon and caecum) in sheep was investigated. DAGO was infused intracerebroventricularly (i.c.v.) at doses of 0.1-1 microg/kg body weight (BW). It was shown that DAGO significantly inhibited myoelectrical activity of the wall of the forestomachs, abomasum and colon but stimulated this activity in the duodenum (rate of myoelec

Effects of famotidine on upper gastrointestinal motility in patients with progressive systemic sclerosis.

The effects of famotidine on human upper gastrointestinal motility were investigated, together with the relationship of gastric alkalinization and serum gastrin levels to changes produced by famotidine. Intravenous famotidine (20 mg), at a dose level in which an inhibitory effect on acetylcholinesterase activity is not recognized, was given to 13 patients with progressive systemic sclerosis but no other disorders. Gastric phasic motor activity was not changed significantly, but the lower esophageal sphincter pressure was elevated significantly in comparison with 15 controls given physiological

Effect of selective and non-selective antimuscarinics on rectosigmoid motility and gastrointestinal transit.

In 12 healthy volunteers, a rectosigmoid motility index (RSMI) was measured when either placebo, 0.5 mg atropine, or 5 mg pirenzepine was given intravenously as a single dose, double-blind, in random order after a control period of 30 min. Compared with the control period, atropine gave a significant decrease of the RSMI during the entire recorded period of 90 min, whereas pirenzepine inhibited RSMI only during the first two 15-min periods. In another series of experiments, gastrointestinal transit was assessed by means of a radiographic marker method. In healthy volunteers, gastrointestinal t

Impact of GLP-1 Receptor Agonists on Whole-Gut Gastrointestinal Motility Using Wireless Motility Capsule: A Descriptive Single-Center Case Series.

This retrospective case series investigates the impact of GLP-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) on whole-gut gastrointestinal motility using wireless motility capsule testing. We analyzed 10 patients on GLP-1RAs who underwent wireless motility capsule testing for constipation or gastroparesis to assess gastric, small bowel, and colonic transit times. Delayed gastric emptying time was observed in 80% of patients, whereas delayed whole-gut transit time was noted in 44% of patients. The 3 patients on semaglutide (1 mg) had the longest gastric emptying time, delayed whole-gut transit time, and were t

Use of endolumenal functional lumen imaging probe in investigating paediatric gastrointestinal motility disorders.

Investigating gastrointestinal (GI) motility disorders relies on diagnostic tools to assess muscular contractions, peristalsis propagation and the integrity and coordination of various sphincters. Manometries are the gold standard to study the GI motor function but it is increasingly acknowledged that manometries do not provide a complete picture in relation to sphincters competencies and muscle fibrosis. Endolumenal functional lumen imaging probe (EndoFLIP) an emerging technology, uses impedance planimetry to measure hollow organs cross sectional area, distensibility and compliance. It has be

Nutrition Management in Patients With Chronic Gastrointestinal Motility Disorders: A Systematic Literature Review.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to systematically review effects of nutrition interventions on outcomes in patients with chronic gastrointestinal (GI) motility disorders. There is currently a lack of evidence-based guidelines for nutrition management in this group, likely a result of the rarity of the conditions. METHODS: A systematic review of all study types to evaluate current evidence-based nutrition interventions was performed using Medline, Embase, and CINAHL databases. Two independent reviewers participated in the process of this systematic review. A total of 15 studies and a tot

CONSORT-epidural dexmedetomidine improves gastrointestinal motility after laparoscopic colonic resection compared with morphine.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

BACKGROUND: We have previously shown that epidural dexmedetomidine, when used as an adjunct to levobupivacaine for control of postoperative pain after open colonic resection, improves recovery of gastrointestinal motility compared with morphine. METHODS: Sixty patients undergoing laparoscopic colonic resection were enrolled and allocated randomly to treatment with dexmedetomidine (group D) or morphine (group M). Group D received an epidural loading dose of dexmedetomidine (5 mL, 0.5 μg/kg), followed by continuous epidural administration of dexmedetomidine (80 μg) in 0.125% levobupivacaine (24

Effect of siguan acupuncture on gastrointestinal motility: a randomized, sham-controlled, crossover trial.

Siguan acupoints have been used to treat gastrointestinal symptoms in acupuncture practices for a long time. This study aimed to investigate the effects of Siguan acupuncture on gastrointestinal motility under accelerated conditions using a randomized, sham-acupuncture-controlled, crossover study. Twenty-one healthy male subjects were hospitalized and randomized into either a real acupuncture group (at Siguan acupoints) or a sham acupuncture group. Subjects were administered with mosapride citrate (15 mg a day) for 2 days starting 24 hours before the first acupuncture treatment. Immediately af

Review article: serotonin receptors and transporters -- roles in normal and abnormal gastrointestinal motility.

The gut is the only organ that can display reflexes and integrative neuronal activity even when isolated from the central nervous system. This activity can be triggered by luminal stimuli that are detected by nerves via epithelial intermediation. Epithelial enterochromaffin cells act as sensory transducers that activate the mucosal processes of both intrinsic and extrinsic primary afferent neurones through their release of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT). Intrinsic primary afferent neurones are present in both the submucosal and myenteric plexuses. Peristaltic and secretory reflexes are initiated b

[Effects of various histamine H2-receptor antagonists on gastrointestinal motility and gastric emptying].

Effects of various histamine H2-receptor antagonists (H2-RA) on gastrointestinal motility and gastric emptying were investigated. Ranitidine, nizatidine and cimetidine dose dependently induced contractions over the entire gastrointestinal tract, and the order of their effects was ranitidine > nizatidine > cimetidine. Roxatidine or famotidine had no effects on motility of the gastrointestinal tract. Ranitidine and nizatidine also induced contractions during the postprandial period and facilitated gastric emptying, while cimetidine, roxatidine or famotidine did not influence gastric emptying. Si

Gastrointestinal Motility-Induced Interplay in Pancreas Proton Therapy: Motion Simulation and Dosimetric Impact.

PURPOSE: To simulate motion and evaluate its dosimetric interplay from gastrointestinal (GI) motility in pancreas pencil-beam scanning (PBS) proton therapy and to assess how fractionation and motility amplitude affect target coverage and organ-at-risk (OAR) doses. METHODS AND MATERIALS: A novel, physiology-informed GI motion simulator was developed to quantify GI motion by generating time-resolved motion modes (peristalsis, rhythmic segmentations, and high-amplitude propagated contractions) parameterized along organ centerlines (stomach, duodenum, and small bowel). The simulator was integrate

Dexamethasone on postoperative gastrointestinal motility: A placebo-controlled, double-blinded, randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Following abdominal surgery, patients usually experience a transient episode of impaired gastrointestinal motility. This study aimed to determine whether a single preoperative dose of dexamethasone can promote the recovery of gastrointestinal function in patients following elective gastrointestinal surgery. METHODS: In this single-center, two-arm, parallel, randomized controlled trial, we studied 126 patients (aged 18-80 years) who underwent elective open or laparoscopic bowel surgery for malignant or benign pathology. At the induction of anesthesia, a treatment group (n =

New-generation 5-HT4 receptor agonists: potential for treatment of gastrointestinal motility disorders.

IMPORTANCE OF THE FIELD: Gastrointestinal (GI) dysmotility is an important mechanism in functional GI disorders (FGIDs) including constipation, irritable bowel syndrome, functional dyspepsia, and gastroparesis. 5-hydroxytryptamine(4) (5-HT(4)) receptors are targets for the treatment of GI motility disorders. However, older 5-HT(4) receptor agonists had limited clinical success because they were associated with changes in the function of the cardiac HERG potassium channel. AREAS COVERED IN THIS REVIEW: We conducted a PubMed search using the following key words alone or in combination: 5-HT(4),

Manometric evaluation of gastrointestinal motility in children with chronic intestinal pseudo-obstruction syndrome.

Various causes of abnormal gastrointestinal motility may account for the symptoms of chronic intestinal pseudo-obstruction syndrome (CIIPS). Fasting gastrointestinal motility in humans is characterized by regular cyclic activity of the migrating motor complex (MMC), which may be used as an objective indicator of intestinal motility. The present study investigated MMC in five children with CIIPS (2 neurogenic and 3 nonneurogenic cases) using a perfused catheter system. The findings were compared with those for children with idiopathic constipation and Hirschsprung's disease. The gastrointestina

GutMove: a new educational game for active learning and assessment of competencies on gastrointestinal motility.

We described our first-ever gastrointestinal (GI) motility game (GutMove), designed to enhance teaching and assessment of knowledge on motility across the GI tract. The game has seven sections: 1 (pregastric regions), 2 (upper stomach), 3 (lower stomach), 4 (small intestine and its transition), 5 (large intestine), 6 (stimulating hormones), and 7 (inhibiting hormones). Sections 1-4 have 8 cells each on the left side, and 12 e-tokens each scattered on the right side, although only 8 e-tokens are correctly matchable to the corresponding left cells, while the remaining 4 e-tokens are distractors

Therapeutic Use of Melatonin for Gastrointestinal Motility and Hypersomnolence in a Patient With Pineal Cyst Pathology.

BACKGROUND Pineal gland cysts are believed to alter the production and release of melatonin, which can impact the sleep/wake cycle and gastrointestinal motility. The optimal management and treatment strategies for benign symptomatic pineal gland cysts are not yet fully determined. CASE REPORT This case report explores the effects of therapeutic melatonin supplementation on gastrointestinal (GI) motility and hypersomnolence in a 59-year-old woman with a benign pineal gland cyst. Melatonin was initiated and titrated based on response to 30 mg nightly. The patient experienced significant improvem
