INTRODUCTION: Cardiac neoplasms are rare and the vast majority are metastatic in origin. Symptoms of cardiac neoplasms (primary or metastatic) usually appear late in the course of the disease and are often ignored because of the more severe effects of the primary malignant disorder or its therapy. Consequently, cardiac neoplasms, especially metastatic ones, are often not discovered until autopsy.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the incidence of cardiac neoplasms at autopsy and to determine the sites of origins of metastatic cardiac neoplasms.
METHODS: The pathology records from consecutive autopsies p

Mucinous carcinomas arising within an ovarian dermoid tumor are rare. Most of the cases reported in the literature show morphological features resembling an appendiceal mucinous neoplasm. They exhibit CK7-/CK20+ immunophenotype similar to carcinomas of the lower gastrointestinal tract. In this report, we have described a case of a well-differentiated mucinous carcinoma arising within a mature cystic teratoma. The mucinous carcinoma showed a spectrum of morphological patterns, including cystadenoma-like areas, proliferative/borderline areas, villous adenoma-like areas, and areas of invasive car

CONTEXT: Somatostatin-producing endocrine tumors of the duodenum are very rare neoplasms of the gastrointestinal tract. These tumors may be associated with von Recklinghausen's disease.
CASE REPORT: We present the case of a 49-year-old female patient with von Recklinghausen's disease and an incidentally diagnosed ampullary neoplasm. The patient was treated with a classical pancreaticoduodenectomy. At surgery, a mass was found in the greater curve of the stomach which was resected using the classic Whipple procedure. Histology and immunohistochemistry showed that the duodenal tumor was an ampu

Inflammatory fibroid polyp of the gastrointestinal tract is a rare, benign neoplasm, most frequently located in the gastric antrum. Symptoms depend on the location and the size of the lesion. Biopsies are limited for the diagnosis of inflammatory fibroid polyps and diagnosis may not be possible until resection. The authors present a case of a 55-year-old woman, presenting with an upper gastrointestinal bleeding due to a large gastric inflammatory fibroid polyp imitating a gastrointestinal stromal tumor.

Choriocarcinoma of the ovary is a rare neoplasm and tends to metastasize early to involve the lungs, brain, and liver. Metastasis to the gastrointestinal tract is rare. We report the case of a young lady, who presented with life-threatening gastrointestinal bleeding, secondary to jejunal involvement. The site of bleeding was localized using a computed tomography angiogram following inconclusive upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopies. The bleeding jejunal segment was resected and the metastatic disease responded to combination chemotherapy. Metastatic choriocarcinoma of the ovary should b

Heterotopic bone formation is a very rare event in the gastrointestinal tract including in the appendix. Here we report three cases of heterotopic ossification in appendiceal mucinous neoplasms, one occurring in an appendiceal mucinous cystadenoma, another in a low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm, and the third occurring in an appendiceal mucinous adenocarcinoma. The clinicopathologic characteristics of these three present cases and two previously reported cases are discussed in detail. The mechanism of heterotopic ossification in appendiceal mucinous neoplasm is still unclear, but mucin e

Although rare, gastrointestinal stromal tumours (GIST) are the most common mesenchymal neoplasms of the gastrointestinal tract. We present our experience with the treatment of 8 patients affected by gastrointestinal stromal tumours of the ileum and colon. These cases were characterised by acute bleeding, intestinal obstruction or diffuse abdominal pain, and all of them underwent an emergency surgical treatment. We performed six partial resections of the ileum, one right hemicolectomy and one left hemicolectomy. Three patients died after surgical procedures for disease relapse, one died 10 year

A case of a small-bowel schwannoma with diffuse familiar lipomatosis is described. This case underlines the rarity of the neoplasm and its probably chance association with subcutaneous lipomatosis. The intestinal neoplasm was diagnosed preoperatively by upper gastrointestinal endoscopy and a small-bowel enema; computed tomography scan confirmed the intestinal lesion. Attention is focused on the morphological features of intestinal schwannomas and their biological behaviour.

There is a well-established association between Streptococcus bovis bacteremia (SBB) and colorectal cancer. However, SBB is also frequently associated with chronic liver disease and has been described with other gastrointestinal disorders. The aim of the study was to evaluate the prevalence of gastrointestinal disease in patients with SBB. Retrospective analysis of the microbiology database at Jackson Memorial Medical Center, Miami, Florida, between 1992 and 2002, was performed. Patients' clinical records were reviewed, with special focus on underlying gastrointestinal disease or other major c

Schwannomas are typically slow growing, encapsulated benign neoplasms. Visceral schwannomas are rare, and preoperative diagnosis is challenging, as they are often confused with other neoplasms even with advanced imaging studies. Surgical excision is usually needed to establish a definitive diagnosis, as pathology is the "gold standard." We review the imaging findings of abdominal schwannomas focusing on pancreatic, gastrointestinal, and retroperitoneal/adrenal schwannomas with pathology correlation. We conclude that schwannoma should be included in the broad differential diagnosis of an abdomi

BACKGROUND: Meckel's Diverticulum is the most commonly encountered congenital anomaly of the small intestine, occurring in approximately 2% of the population. Occasionally Meckel's diverticulum harbors neoplasms.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 65 year old gentleman, presented with a pelvic mass. On exploratory laparotomy, it turned out to be gastrointestinal stromal tumour (GIST) arising from Meckel's diverticulum. Short history and review of literature are discussed.
CONCLUSION: Neoplasms occurring from Meckel's diverticulum, even though rare, should be considered as differential diagnosis of pelvic

Gastrointestinal neuroendocrine tumors are rare neoplasms. Currently, incidence of gastric neuroendocrine tumors (gNETs) is being significantly increased. There are 3 groups of gNETs: types I, II and III. Each type has important features regarding clinical picture, prognosis and treatment strategy. Type I is the most common (70-80%) and associated with chronic atrophic gastritis including autoimmune gastritis and Helicobacter associated atrophic gastritis. Type II (5-6%) is associated with multiple endocrine neoplasia type I and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome (MEN I - ZES). Both types are characte

Peutz-Jeghers syndrome (PJS) is a well-described inherited syndrome, characterized by the development of gastrointestinal polyps and characteristic mucocutaneous freckling. PJS is an autosomal prevailing disease, due to genetic mutation on chromosome 19p, manifested by restricted mucocutaneous melanosis in association with gastrointestinal (GI) polyposis. The gene for PJS has recently been shown to be a serine/threonine kinase, known as LKB1 or STK11, which maps to chromosome subband 19p13.3. This gene has a putative coding region of 1302 bp, divided into nine exons, and acts as a tumor suppre

Goblet cell carcinoids are biphasic neoplasms of the gastrointestinal tract composed of a glandular and neuroendocrine differentiation. Typically, goblet cell carcinoids are localized in the vermiform appendix. We report the case of a 60-year-old female patient with the diagnosis of a 1.2-cm rectal goblet cell carcinoid tumor discovered during prophylactic proctocolonoscopy. Because of the known aggressive behavior of this entity, a rectosigmoidectomy was performed. The preoperative staging revealed neither local nor systemic spread. After 8 months, the patient is in good health. As a primary

Melanoma is among the most prevalent neoplasms diagnosed annually with the vast majority arising from a cutaneous origin. Though there are described metastases to the gastrointestinal tract, there are only rare descriptions of primary gastrointestinal melanoma. Both diagnosis and management of this unique population can be challenging given the infrequency with which it occurs. To follow is the third reported case of transverse colon primary melanoma with a description of multimodality treatment with surgery, chemotherapy, and immunotherapy.

Recurrent fusions involving neurotrophin tyrosine receptor kinase (NTRK) genes have been increasingly recognised in spindle cell tumours of somatic soft tissues due to the widespread use of RNA-based sequencing techniques. This heterogeneous group of neoplasms is included as an emerging entity in the current WHO Classification of Soft Tissue and Bone Tumors A subset of these tumours, associated with NTRK1 fusions, displays a distinctive phenotype in the form of monomorphic cytomorphology, patternless arrangement, perivascular and stromal hyalinisation, and CD34+/S100+/SOX10- immunoprofile. The authors report a case of cecal malignant carcinoid, diagnosticated in a 68 years old male patient. Carcinoid tumours are rare neoplasm and their behaviour seems to change with the localization. Cecal carcinoid represents only 2-3% of gastrointestinal carcinoid. Some times it is discovered incidentally at autopsy, surgery or endoscopy. The aim of this paper has been to review, in literature, the frequency, treatment and prognosis of this neoplasm.

A 17-year-old, gelded Quarter Horse cross was found to have a large, intra-abdominal mass. Clinical signs included infrequent mild colic, weight loss, and chronic anemia. Surgery revealed a very large, discrete, hemorrhagic, multilobular mass with vascular attachments to the transverse colon, mesocolon, jejunal mesentery, and omentum; the site of origin was the transverse colon. Histologic examination demonstrated dense sheets, fascicles, palisades, and interconnecting streams of neoplastic spindle cells with lesser numbers of admixed multinucleated giant cells. Based on morphology alone, this

Leiomyoma is a benign myogenic tumor that may develop wherever smooth muscle is present. It occurs commonly in the uterus, skin, and gastrointestinal tract and is rare within the nasal cavity. Only three of twenty-four reported cases of sinonasal leiomyoma have been found to originate from the nasal septum. Treatment of choice for these neoplasms is surgical excision. We present two cases of nasal septal leiomyoma. Unique features discussed include recurrence of one neoplasm and the technique used to endoscopically repair a cerebrospinal fluid leak resulting from resection of the neoplasm.
