Inequity in the transmission of malaria infection among children and adolescents: a cohort study in rural Guinea.

Malaria remains a major health concern in rural Guinea, where children face fivefold higher infection risk compared to urban areas. While disparities between rural and urban regions have been documented, inequities within rural areas remain unexplored. Socioeconomic factors influence malaria risk, which varies according to season. Understanding seasonal variations in socioeconomic factors is crucial for developing equitable and targeted interventions. This cohort study was conducted in Mafèrinyah, Guinea, with participants aged 1-19 years of age. Data were collected through monthly home visits

Role of Perioperative Trauma-Informed Care in Gender-Affirming Surgery.

Despite advances and expansion in the field of gender-affirming surgery (GAS) in recent years, perioperative care quality remains an area for improvement. Transgender and gender-diverse patients experience disproportionately high rates of intimate partner violence and sexual trauma, making them particularly vulnerable to re-traumatization while engaging in perioperative care for GAS. Implementing trauma-informed care (TIC) practices across preoperative, intraoperative, postoperative, and institutional phases can improve safety, trust, and patient outcomes. This narrative review synthesizes lit

Availability and accessibility of Primary Health Care services in a district of Bangladesh with lower health outcomes: a study based on consumer perceptions.

BACKGROUND: Consumer perspectives in Primary Health Care (PHC) need further exploration in Bangladesh. The study aimed to explore consumer-perception-based availability and accessibility of PHC services, along with equity, in a lower health outcome district. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in the low-performing district, Moulvibazar. Adult Health Care Consumers (HCCs, n = 417), attending PHC facilities were purposively selected and data were collected through face-to-face interviews. Individual questions were weighted, and Self-Reported Availability Score (SRAvS) and Self-Repor

Mind the 'inequality' gap: intersectionality-informed scoping review of inequalities and adverse experiences of health and care workers globally.

CONTEXT: Health and care workers' well-being is critical for comprehensive human resources for health (HRH) planning. However, system-wide factors such as wage disparities and career advancement barriers remain underexplored, while most existing planning frameworks focus on gender, ignoring other interactions shaping the HRH experiences. OBJECTIVE: To systematically map literature on adverse HRH experiences, underlying inequalities and the resulting impact using an intersectional equity lens. METHODS: A rigorous scoping protocol was developed which guided the search in four bibliographic dat

Parkinson's research with inclusion, diversity and equity (PRIDE): examining Parkinson's disease symptoms among LGBTQ+ and non-LGBTQ+ adults.

INTRODUCTION: Nearly four million LGBTQ+ adults aged 50 and older live in the U.S., with up to 40,000 currently living with Parkinson's disease (PD). However, little is known about PD-related symptoms in this population. METHODS: From 2022 to 2025, we conducted a national cross-sectional study using a convenience sample of LGBTQ+ and non-LGBTQ+ individuals living with PD (n = 254). We administered validated PD and health-related measures to examine physical, mental and social health symptoms. Bivariate and regression models examined differences in symptom burden between LGBTQ+ and non-LGBTQ+

Development and Validation of the Professional Readiness in Diversity and Equity Scale: Protocol for a Scale Validation Study.

BACKGROUND: Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and intersex (LGBTQI+) patients continue to experience stigma, discrimination, and inadequate knowledge among mental health and medical professionals. These barriers can negatively impact health care outcomes, leading to delayed treatment, mistrust, and unmet medical needs within LGBTQI+ communities. Providing culturally competent care to LGBTQI+ people remains a critical challenge within health and social care. The development and use of reliable and valid assessments examining LGBTQI+ health care professional competency continue to be i

Structural determinants of HIV inequities in South Africa: Policy analysis of the national strategic plan for HIV 2023-2028.

BACKGROUND: South Africa continues to experience the world's highest HIV burden despite major progress in antiretroviral therapy (ART) scale-up. Persistent disparities across gender, geography, and socioeconomic status reveal that structural and political inequities shape vulnerability, access, and outcomes. This paper examines inequalities in HIV outcomes and evaluates how social, economic, and political structures influence policy effectiveness despite expanded ART coverage. METHODS: A document-based policy analysis was conducted using Walt and Gilson's Policy Triangle framework. National s

Informal end-of-life care-hidden costs: multi-method analysis.

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the economic costs of informal caregiving at the end of life in Argentina, incorporating both direct and indirect costs, and to analyse their distribution through a gender equity lens. METHODS: The study is part of the international iLIVE project and includes data from 153 informal caregivers of patients with life-limiting illnesses in Argentina. Costs were estimated using both the opportunity cost and proxy-good methods. Information was collected at baseline and at the 30-day follow-up using the Caregiver Impact Questionnaire, which measured the time spent on caregivin

Health Is Not a Zero-Sum Game: Bringing Gender in Boys' Health Research and Practice.

Global health research and programming have historically treated gender as synonymous with women and girls, overlooking how gender norms also shape boys' health. This commentary argues that boys' health disparities (such as higher rates of premature mortality from violence, injury, and substance use) are deeply gendered outcomes, rooted in social expectations of risk-taking, stoicism, and dominance. Using evidence from the Global Burden of Disease Study and contemporary gender theory, we argue that gender affects girls' as much as boys' health. We further contend that the gender approaches hav

Gender Bias and Diagnostic Delays in Young Women: A Narrative Review.

Gender bias continues to influence diagnostic pathways for young women, contributing to delayed recognition of serious neurological, cardiovascular, autoimmune, and pain-related conditions. Symptoms such as visual disturbances, chest discomfort, fatigue, and multisystem complaints are frequently misattributed to stress, psychosocial factors, or benign causes. This narrative review synthesises existing literature on diagnostic disparities affecting young women across multiple specialities. Evidence highlights longer diagnostic intervals for conditions such as multiple sclerosis, optic neuritis,

The gender authorship gap in gynecologic oncology research.

Female first authorship and senior authorship in academic obstetrics and gynecology has increased over time but gender-specific publishing data are lacking within gynecologic oncology. We examined contribution by gender to the subspecialty's flagship journal, Gynecologic Oncology, over five decades, from 1972 to 2014, to identify trends in gender representation. Chi-square tests were used to compare gender distributions within and between the first and last years studied (1972-73 and 2014) as well as linear regression to model trends over time. Female first and senior authorship increased sign

How equitable is digital rehabilitation for people after stroke? A systematic review using an equity approach.

INTRODUCTION: Stroke is the largest global cause of adult neuro-disability. Health inequities increase the risk of stroke and are likely to influence overall recovery. Rehabilitation after stroke seeks to restore function and independence and may utilise digital technologies to augment usual care. This study systematically investigates the reporting of equity factors in digital stroke rehabilitation research. METHODS: This systematic review examined equity factors contained in the PROGRESS-Plus framework in a random sample of clinical trials of technologies used as part of stroke rehabilitati

Mapping inequities in digital health transformation within Ethiopia's primary health care system using PROGRESS-plus: Scoping review.

OBJECTIVES: Digital health technologies (DHTs) are recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO) as essential to achieving Universal Health Coverage, yet major equity gaps persist in low-resource settings such as Ethiopia. This scoping review applies the PROGRESS-Plus framework to examine how overlapping social identities (e.g., gender, residence, and income) shape inequities in access to, use of, and engagement with DHTs in Ethiopia's primary healthcare (PHC) system. METHODS: Following Arksey and O'Malley's framework enhanced by Levac et al. and reported using PRISMA-ScR 2020 guidelines.

Does Integrating Family Planning into HIV Services Improve Gender Equitable Attitudes? Results from a Cluster Randomized Trial in Nyanza, Kenya.

This study investigated whether integrating family planning (FP) services into HIV care was associated with gender equitable attitudes among HIV-positive adults in western Kenya. Surveys were conducted with 480 women and 480 men obtaining HIV services from 18 clinics 1 year after the sites were randomized to integrated FP/HIV services (N = 12) or standard referral for FP (N = 6). We used multivariable regression, with generalized estimating equations to account for clustering, to assess whether gender attitudes (range 0-12) were associated with integrated care and with contraceptive use. 'Back to better': amplifying health equity, and determinants of health perspectives during the COVID-19 pandemic.

INTRODUCTION: Equity and social justice have long been key tenets of health promotion practice, policy and research. Health promotion foregrounds the pertinence of social, economic, cultural, political and spiritual life in creating and maintaining health. This necessitates a critical structural determinants of health perspective that actively engages with the experiences of health and wellbeing among diverse peoples. The inequitable impacts of pandemics are well documented, as are calls for improved pandemic responses. Yet, current pandemic and emergency preparedness plans do not adequately a
