[Genetic disease in general practice. An interview study among general practitioners in Oppland and Oslo].

We interviewed 51 Norwegian general practitioners selected at random about their knowledge and practice of medical genetics. Of these doctors, 29 worked in Oslo and 22 in Oppland county. About 90% of the doctors working in Oslo knew where to refer patients for genetic counselling, while 55% of the doctors working in the area outside Oslo had this knowledge. We believe that this difference is because Oslo has a municipal genetic clinic and is the only area in Norway with an adequate genetic counselling service according to WHO standards. This article presents the results from this survey, and d

The role of the general practitioner in managing age-related hearing loss: perspectives of general practitioners, patients and practice staff.

BACKGROUND: For people with hearing loss, the General Practitioner (GP) can play an instrumental role in early detection of hearing loss as well as guiding appropriate and timely choices for addressing hearing concerns. The aim of this study was to generate a conceptual framework for understanding the role of the GP in managing age-related hearing loss. METHODS: Concept mapping techniques were used to gather the perspectives of GPs (n = 8), adults with hearing loss (n = 22), and professionals working with GPs (n = 5), in Australia. Participants generated statements describing the role of the

Difficulties associated with outpatient management of drug abusers by general practitioners. A cross-sectional survey of general practitioners with and without methadone patients in Switzerland.

BACKGROUND: In Switzerland, general practitioners (GPs) manage most of the patients receiving methadone maintenance treatment (MMT). METHODS: Using a cross-sectional postal survey of GPs who treat MMT patients and GPs who do not, we studied the difficulties encountered in the out-patient management of drug-addicted patients. We sent a questionnaire to every GP with MMT patients (556) in the French-speaking part of Switzerland (1,757,000 inhabitants). We sent another shorter questionnaire to primary care physicians without MMT patients living in the Swiss Canton of Vaud. RESULTS: The response

How do general practitioners identify inflammatory arthritis? A cohort analysis of Dutch general practitioner electronic medical records.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the symptoms, signs and additional investigations that general practitioners (GPs) used in the process of diagnosing recent-onset inflammatory arthritis. Here, we assumed that the recorded information was crucial in the diagnostic process of arthritis. METHODS: A database including electronic medical records of 16 Dutch general practices with 44,350 patients was studied. Patients with an episode of RA and allied conditions according to the International Classification of Primary Care-1 code L88 (here summarized as inflammatory arthritis) in the period 2009-2013 were sele

The Impact of Digitalization on European General Practice From the Perspective of General Practitioners: Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Digital health technologies, including telemedicine, electronic medical records, digital health tools (DHTs), and AI, are transforming European primary care, but evidence on how general practitioners (GPs) experience these tools remains fragmented. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to synthesize European GPs' perspectives on the adoption and implementation of digital health technologies, focusing on perceived usefulness, ease of use, implementation barriers, workload, and doctor-patient relationships. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review following PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Sys

We aimed to assess the perceptions and potential barriers to deprescribing among Italian GPs. METHODS: GPs were invited to participate in an observational cross-sectional study through an online survey containing 20 questions addressing attitudes towards deprescribing, including physicians' perceptions, potential barriers, and how this process is addressed in daily clinical practice. High Diagnostic Accuracy of Long-Term Electrocardiogram Interpretation by General Practitioners.

AIMS: Traditional long-term ECG monitoring systems have primarily been used by cardiologist. New remote and wearable easy-to-use devices have led to increased use of ECG recordings also outside cardiology clinics. The aims of this study were to assess the feasibility and diagnostic accuracy of interpretation of the one-lead ECG recordings from a patch ECG device (ECG247 Smart Heart Sensor system) by general practitioners (GP). METHODS: Norwegian GPs were invited to digitally assess 10 long-term ECG recordings with different arrhythmias performed by the ECG247 Smart Heart Sensor system. For al

Treatment of Cystitis by Hungarian General Practitioners: A Prospective Observational Study.

Background: Lower urinary tract infections (LUTIs) are amongst the most common community acquired infections with frequent antibiotic prescribing. Objectives: To assess empiric antibiotic choice in different types of lower urinary tract infections. We also aimed to identify determinants of fluoroquinolone prescribing, as well as to determine the rate of short antibiotic courses. The frequencies of executing laboratory tests and recommending analgesics/anti-inflammatory drugs were also assessed. Methods: A prospective observational study was performed in 19 different Hungarian primary care prac

Prevalence of Actinic Keratosis in Patients Attending General Practitioners in Switzerland.

BACKGROUND: Most of the data concerning the prevalence of actinic keratosis (AK) originate from the USA and Australia, and recently from Austria and Spain, but are based on populations in dermatology practices. Switzerland is the leading country with skin cancer incidence in Europe. AK prevalence among the Swiss population is therefore an important public health issue. OBJECTIVE: To assess the prevalence of AK in the outpatient Swiss population in general practice. METHODS: General practitioners captured AK diagnosis stage and localization in consecutive patients, who attended the physician

General practitioners and vaccination of children presenting with a benign infection.

PURPOSE: To assess the self-reported vaccination behavior of general practitioners (GPs) when asked whether they would recommend the vaccination of a child presenting with a febrile uncomplicated common cold. METHODS: We performed a cross-sectional survey in 2014 on a national sample of GPs. GPs were randomly assigned to one of eight clinical vignettes, all describing a child presenting with an uncomplicated febrile common cold, but differing by age (4 or 11 months), temperature (38°C or 39°C), and the mother's emotional state (calm or worried). GPs were asked whether they would recommend imm

Involvement of general practitioners in palliative cancer care: a qualitative study.

The intensity of care and its medical complexity make palliative care a demanding task for general practitioners. This study explored general practitioners' perceptions of their involvement in palliative cancer care and the constraints they confront. METHODS: We conducted semi-structured interviews with 13 German general practitioners. Recruitment occurred by means of purposeful sampling to secure maximum heterogeneity. The interviews were electronically recorded, transcribed, and then analyzed using

Indicators show differences in antibiotic use between general practitioners and paediatricians.

The purpose of this investigation was to adapt to an individual physician level and to the paediatric context a set of drug-specific indicators of outpatient antibiotic use developed by the European Surveillance of Antimicrobial Consumption (ESAC) project, and to describe the differences in antibiotic prescriptions between general practitioners (GPs) and paediatricians. We conducted a retrospective cross-sectional study analysing antibiotic prescriptions in 2009 for children below 16 years of age in south-eastern France, using the National Health Insurance (NHI) outpatient reimbursement databa
