The emergence and spread of multidrug-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae (MDR-KP), which leads to acute lung injury (ALI) and severe pneumonia, pose a huge challenge to clinical treatment and public health. Non-antibiotic strategies have recently garnered significant attention as promising avenues for combating antibiotic resistance. In this study, whole-genome sequencing of an MDR-KP strain isolated from a deceased goat revealed key genetic features underlying its pathogenicity, including 31 resistance genes mediating broad-spectrum resistance to 14 antibiotic classes, 71 pathogen-host interacti

Gram-negative bacteria partly rely on efflux pumps to facilitate growth under stressful conditions and to increase resistance to a wide variety of commonly used drugs. In recent years, Escherichia coli sequence type 131 (ST131) has emerged as a major cause of extraintestinal infection frequently exhibiting a multidrug resistance (MDR) phenotype. The contribution of efflux to MDR in emerging E. coli MDR clones, however, is not well studied. We characterized strains from an international collection of clinical MDR E. coli isolates by MIC testing with and without the addition of the AcrAB-TolC ef

Malignant tumor endangers seriously the health of all mankind. Multidrug resistance (MDR) is one of the main causes of clinical tumor chemotherapy failure. Curcumin (CUR) has not only antitumor activity but also reversing tumor MDR effect. CUR reverses tumor MDR via regulating related signal pathways or corresponding expressed proteins or gene. When combined with chemotherapeutic agents, CUR can be a chemotherapeutic sensitive agent to enhance chemotherapy efficacy and weaken tumor MDR. On the other hand, to improve the MDR reversal effect of CUR, its derivatives have been extensively studied.

Tuberculosis (TB) is a major infectious disease killing nearly two million people, mostly in developing countries, every year. The increasing incidence of resistance of Mycobacterium tuberculosis strains to the most-effective (first-line) anti-TB drugs is a major factor contributing to the current TB epidemic. Drug-resistant strains have evolved mainly due to incomplete or improper treatment of TB patients. Resistance of M. tuberculosis to anti-TB drugs is caused by chromosomal mutations in genes encoding drug targets. Multidrug-resistant (resistant at least to rifampin and isoniazid) strains

Linezolid and penicillin are critical for treating multidrug resistant (MDR) Gram-positive infections, but the emergence of resistance to both seriously threatens public health. Here, we first report the cocarrying poxtA (oxazolidinone resistance) and pbp5fm (β-lactam resistance) genes by the plasmid in a strain of Enterococcus hirae HDC14-2 derived from porcine. The isolate also exhibits MDR phenotypes to phenicols, oxazolidinones, tetracyclines, β-lactams, aminoglycosides, macrolides, and lincosamides. Whole-genome sequencing (WGS) revealed these resistance genes, along with tet(L), tet(M),

Globally, cephalosporin therapy failure is a serious problem for infection control. One causative agent of cephalosporin-resistant infections is multidrug-resistant (MDR) E. coli producing extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBLs) and/or plasmid-encoded AmpC (pAmpC) β-lactamases. We evaluated the occurrence of ESBL/pAmpC genetic determinants in phenotypically MDR E. coli isolated from clinical samples of blood, faeces, ear effusion, urine and sputum from a UK hospital. Phenotypic resistance profiling for 18 antibiotics (from seven classes) showed that 32/35 isolates were MDR, with resistance to 4

Klebsiella pneumoniae is an important cause of healthcare-associated infections worldwide. Selective pressure, the extensive use of antibiotics, and the conjugational transmission of antibiotic resistance genes across bacterial species and genera facilitate the emergence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) K. pneumoniae. Here, we examined the occurrence, phenotypes and genetic features of MDR K. pneumoniae isolated from patients in intensive care units (ICUs) at the First Affiliated Hospital of Xiamen University in Xiamen, China, from January to December 2011. Thirty-eight MDR K. pneumoniae strains w
