Start-Up of Chitosan-Assisted Anaerobic Sludge Bed Reactors Treating Light Oxygenated Solvents under Intermittent Operation.

Quality of the granular sludge developed during the start-up of anaerobic up-flow sludge bed reactors is of crucial importance to ensure the process feasibility of treating industrial wastewater such as those containing solvents. In this study, the microbial granule formation from suspended-growth biomass was investigated in two chitosan-assisted reactors. These reactors operated mimicking industrial sites working with night closures treating a mixture of ethanol, ethyl acetate, and 1-ethoxy-2-propanol. Each reactor operated under different hydrodynamic regimes typical from UASB (R1: <0.15 m h

Nitrous Oxide Is a Potent Inhibitor of Bacterial Reductive Dechlorination.

Organohalide-respiring bacteria are key players for the turnover of organohalogens. At sites impacted with chlorinated ethenes, bioremediation promotes reductive dechlorination; however, stoichiometric conversion to environmentally benign ethene is not always achieved. We demonstrate that nitrous oxide (N2O), a compound commonly present in groundwater, inhibits organohalide respiration. N2O concentrations in the low micromolar range decreased dechlorination rates and resulted in incomplete dechlorination of tetrachloroethene (PCE) in Geobacter lovleyi strain SZ and of cis-1,2-dichloroethene (

The influence of liming on cadmium accumulation in rice grains via iron-reducing bacteria.

Cadmium (Cd) in soil is attracting worldwide attention, and many valuable measures and suggestions of minimizing the rice grain Cd are available. Among these methods, liming can increase the soil pH and decrease the rice grain Cd content. Here, we report that soil pH was negatively and significantly correlated with the concentration of soil extractable Fe and Cd. In addition, the iron concentration on root surface was significantly and positively associated with the available metals in soil and the rice grain Cd. However, the return of contaminated rice straw significantly increased the Cd acc

Role of microbial activity in Fe(III) hydroxysulfate mineral transformations in an acid mine drainage-impacted site from the Dabaoshan Mine.

Fe(III) hydroxysulfate minerals are secondary minerals commonly found in acid mine drainage (AMD) sites and have a major impact on water and soil quality in these environments. While previous studies showed that the Fe(III) hydroxysulfate mineral transformation could be mediated by some bacterial strains under laboratory conditions, the role of indigenous microbial activity in Fe(III) hydroxysulfate mineral transformation in natural environment has received little attention. In this study, microcosms were constructed with AMD-affected river water and sediment from the Dabaoshan Mine that was e

Overlooked role of soil microbial-derived carbon in promoting neurotoxic methylmercury production.

The bioaccumulation of neurotoxic methylmercury (MeHg) in rice has raised global concerns due to its potential threat to human health. Organic carbon is a crucial factor influencing MeHg production in soils, as it regulates mercury bioavailability and microbial activity. However, the role of microbial-derived carbon, a critical source of soil organic matter, in regulating MeHg production remains unclear. Here, we compared the effect of microbial necromass (i.e., Gram-negative bacteria, Gram-positive bacteria, and fungi) and plant residues on microbial mercury methylation during incubation of p

Feammox bacterial biofilm formation in HFMB.

Nitrogen pollution has been increasing with the development of industrialization. Consequently, the excessive deposition of reactive nitrogen in the environment has generated the loss of biodiversity and eutrophication of different ecosystems. In 2005, a Feammox process was discovered that anaerobically metabolizes ammonium. Feammox with the use of hollow fiber membrane bioreactors (HFMB), based on the formation of biofilms of bacterial communities, has emerged as a possible efficient and sustainable method for ammonium removal in environments with high iron concentrations. This work sought to

Efficient degradation of aqueous dichloromethane by an enhanced microbial electrolysis cell: Degradation kinetics, microbial community and metabolic mechanisms.

Dichloromethane (DCM) has been listed as a toxic and harmful water pollutant, and its removal needs attention. Microbial electrolysis cells (MECs) are viewed as a promising alternative for pollutant removal, which can be strengthened from two aspects: microbial inoculation and acclimation. In this study, the MEC for DCM degradation was inoculated with the active sludge enhanced by Methylobacterium rhodesianum H13 (strain H13) and then acclimated in the form of a microbial fuel cell (MFC). Both the introduction of strain H13 and the initiation in MFC form significantly promoted DCM degradation.

Resupply, diffusion, and bioavailability of Hg in paddy soil-water environment with flood-drain-reflood and straw amendment.

Mercury (Hg) poses a significant risk in paddy fields, particularly when it is converted to methylmercury (MeHg) and accumulates in rice. However, the bioavailability and resupply kinetics of Hg in the paddy soil-water environment are not well understood. In this study, the diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT) and the 'DGT-induced fluxes in sediments' model (DIFS) were first adopted to investigate the Hg resupply kinetics, diffusion fluxes and bioavailability in a paddy environment subjected to flood-drain-reflood treatment and straw amendment. Our results show that although the straw amend

Prepubertal gonad investment modulates thymus function: evidence in a teleost fish.

Extracellular electron transfer (EET) is a central process in the respiratory metabolism of electrogenic bacteria, enabling cells to exchange electrons with extracellular acceptors and donors. This capability has opened opportunities to exploit these bacteria in diverse practical applications, many of which would benefit from a precise understanding of the electron transfer (ET) events occurring within their respiratory chains. These chains rely on highly populated networks of c-type cytochromes that mediate electron flow across cellular compartments toward terminal electron acceptors. Althoug

Using Fe(II)/Fe(III) as catalyst to drive a novel anammox process with no need of anammox bacteria.

A novel 'anammox' in the absence of anammox bacteria was confirmed to occur in an anaerobic sludge slurry system, in which Fe(II)/Fe(III) cycle driven by NO2--induced Fe(II) oxidation and subsequent NH4+-induced Fe(III) reduction (Feammox) pushed the nitrogen removal. Results showed that Fe(II) contents significantly (p<0.05) decreased and Fe(III) accordingly increased with NO2- addition, indicating that Fe(II) was anaerobically oxidized to Fe(III). With depletion of NO2-, the Fe(II) content began to increase which was a result of Feammox. Consequently, 96.0% NH4+-N of the NO2--added reactor w

Bioelectrochemical assisted dechlorination of tetrachloroethylene and 1,2-dichloroethane by acclimation of anaerobic sludge.

Volatile chlorinated hydrocarbons (VCHs) are often found as a type of persistent and ubiquitous contaminant in groundwater. The feasibility, characteristics and microbial mechanism of acclimation of biodiversity-rich inoculation source for bioelectrochemical stimulated VCH dechlorination remain poorly understood. Here, the superior bioelectrochemical catalytic activities were observed for tetrachloroethylene (0.26 mM d-1) and 1,2-dichloroethane (2.20 mM d-1) dechlorination in anaerobic sludge-acclimated biocathodes with an optimal potential of -0.5 V, averaging 1.60-2.71 times higher than thos

Syntrophs dominate sequences associated with the mercury methylation-related gene hgcA in the water conservation areas of the Florida Everglades.

The mechanisms and rates of mercury methylation in the Florida Everglades are of great concern because of potential adverse impacts on human and wildlife health through mercury accumulation in aquatic food webs. We developed a new PCR primer set targeting hgcA, a gene encoding a corrinoid protein essential for Hg methylation across broad phylogenetic boundaries, and used this primer set to study the distribution of hgcA sequences in soils collected from three sites along a gradient in sulfate and nutrient concentrations in the northern Everglades. The sequences obtained were distributed in div

Optimizing Cr(VI) and Tc(VII) remediation through nanoscale biomineral engineering.

The influence of Fe(III) starting material on the ability of magnetically recoverable biogenic magnetites produced by Geobacter sulfurreducens to retain metal oxyanion contaminants has been investigated. The reduction/removal of aqueous Cr(VI) was used to probe the reactivity of the biomagnetites. Nanomagnetites produced by the bacterial reduction of schwertmannite powder were more efficient at reducing Cr(VI) than either ferrihydrite "gel"-derived biomagnetite or commercial nanoscale Fe(3)O(4). Examination of post-exposure magnetite surfaces indicated both Cr(III) and Cr(VI) were present. X-r

Magnetite-assisted enhancement of stability and resilience in anaerobic digesters against hydraulic overloading and volatile fatty acid shocks.

Anaerobic digestion (AD) stability is often compromised under operational disturbances due to imbalances between acidogenesis and methanogenesis, where insufficient interspecies electron transfer (IET) can limit syntrophic oxidation of volatile fatty acids (VFAs). Conductive additives are widely recognized to enhance direct IET (DIET), yet the responses of electroactive microbial communities that support process resilience to operational disturbances remain unclear. Here, duplicate continuous AD reactors with and without submicron magnetite (Fe3O4) supplementation were operated under sequentia

Changes in the cervicovaginal microbiota composition of HPV16-infected patients after clinical treatment.

BACKGROUND: High-risk human papillomavirus (hrHPV) infection is a key factor that alters cervicovaginal microbiota patterns and causes cervical intraepithelial neoplasias (CINs) or even cervical cancer. Although local excisional treatment can clear hrHPV infection and restore the cervicovaginal microbiota, it is unclear which cervicovaginal microbiota represents recovery. Our objective was to describe the cervicovaginal microbiota before and after treatments and to assess the association between the microbiota and HPV persistence. RESULTS: A cohort of 91 participants was classified into four

Use of biochar to reduce mercury accumulation in Oryza sativa L: A trial for sustainable management of historically polluted farmlands.

Mitigating the risk of mercury (Hg) contamination in rice soils using environmental friendly amendments is essential to reducing the probable daily intake (PDI) of MeHg via rice consumption. Here, we examined the impacts of different doses (0% (control), 0.6% and 3%) of rice hull-derived biochar (RHB) and mixture of wheat-rice straw-derived biochar (RWB) on the fractionation, phytoavailability, and uptake of total (THg) and methyl Hg (MeHg) by rice in Hg-polluted soil (THg = 78.3 mg kg-1) collected from Wanshan Hg mining area. Both biochars increased rice biomass up to 119% as compared to cont

Survey of dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium microbial community at national wetland of Shanghai, China.

Dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonia (DNRA) process is an important nitrate reduction pathway in the environment. Numerous studies focused on the DNRA, especially in various natural habitats. However, little is known about the envrionmental parameters driving the DNRA process in anthropogenic ecosystem. Human activities put forward significant influence on nitrogen cycle and bacterial communities of sediment. This study aimed to assess the DNRA potential rates, nrfA gene abundance, DNRA bacterial community's diversity and influencing factors in a national wetland park near the Yangtze Ri

Electron acceptors determine the BTEX degradation capacity of anaerobic microbiota via regulating the microbial community.

Anaerobic degradation is the major pathway for microbial degradation of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes (BTEX) under electron acceptor lacking conditions. However, how exogenous electron acceptors modulate BTEX degradation through shaping the microbial community structure remains poorly understood. Here, we investigated the effect of various exogenous electron acceptors on BTEX degradation as well as methane production in anaerobic microbiota, which were enriched from the same contaminated soil. It was found that the BTEX degradation capacities of the anaerobic microbiota gradually

Molecular insights into the coupled transformation of dissolved organic matter and arsenic in lake sediment driven by algal input under redox fluctuations.

Algal organic matter (AOM) released during algal degradation promotes the mobilization of arsenic (As) from lake sediments into the overlying water. This process has been well studied under static anaerobic or aerobic conditions. However, owing to the complexity of AOM, the molecular mechanisms driving its dynamic changes and their impact on the coupled transformation of dissolved organic matter (DOM) and As in sediments remain poorly understood under redox fluctuations. To address this gap, we investigated the effects of AOM input on As mobility and speciation by characterizing sediment DOM v

Preliminary Study of Microbial Corrosion of Stainless Steel AISI 304 Under Conditions Simulating Deep Radioactive Waste Disposal.

This work involved the laboratory modeling of biogenic and biogenically mediated corrosion of AISI 304 stainless steel under geochemical conditions representative of the geological disposal of radioactive waste at the Yeniseisky site (Russia). Experiments with a single glucose stimulation of a microbial community sampled from a depth of 450 m established that the initial dominance of organotrophic microflora (primarily genera such as Xanthobacterium, Novosphingobium, Hydrogenophaga, and Pseudomonas) during the first stage (up to 30 days) led to the formation of a microbial biofilm.
