Adapting a brief smoke-free homes intervention for communities in Armenia and Georgia.

Evidence-based interventions (EBIs) often require adaptation to be effective for new communities and/or cultural contexts. This paper describes the process for adapting an evidence-based smoke-free homes (SFHs) intervention to be culturally appropriate for households in Armenia and Georgia. The intervention, including three mailed packages ("mailings") and a coaching call, was adapted using a systematic multi-step adaptation process involving: (i) focus groups (n = 8) among adults in Armenia and Georgia, who smoked cigarettes or lived in a household with someone who smoked; (ii) consulting wit

Nosocomial Pneumonia in Georgia: A Focus on Gram-Positive Bacteria and Antimicrobial Resistance.

Nosocomial pneumonia represents a significant clinical challenge worldwide, and in Georgia, the burden of this healthcare-associated infection is a growing concern. This study investigates the role of gram-positive bacteria in nosocomial pneumonia cases, focusing on their prevalence, antimicrobial resistance patterns, and associated risk factors. A retrospective analysis of 484 clinical samples collected from 397 patients between May 2022 and September 2024 highlights the distribution of pathogens, with a particular emphasis on Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pneumoniae. Among gram-pos

Cognitive functions in children exposed to antiepileptic drugs in utero - Study in Georgia.

OBJECTIVE: The cognitive teratogenicity of antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) has gained increasing attention in the last decade. The objective of the current study was to assess the effects of AED fetal exposure on the cognitive development of children of mothers with epilepsy from Georgia in a controlled study taking into consideration major confounding factors. METHODS: A prospective cohort group was formed from children and mothers registered in the Georgian National AED-Pregnancy Registry. The study group's age- and gender-matched control children without fetal AED exposure were selected retrosp

Evidence for West Nile virus spillover into the squirrel population in Atlanta, Georgia.

BACKGROUND: In the United States, spillover of West Nile virus (WNV) into wild mammal populations has been reported since the introduction of the virus into the New World in 1999. Eastern gray squirrels (Sciurus carolinensis) exhibit a high seroprevalence for WNV in urban settings where high virus circulation and human spillover have been reported. In Atlanta, Georgia, human cases of WNV are uncommon despite high infection rates in birds and mosquitoes. In this study, we evaluated WNV exposure of eastern gray squirrels in a WNV hot spot in Atlanta. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Gray squirrels were l

Molecular epidemiology of norovirus in children and the elderly in Atlanta, Georgia, United States.

Noroviruses are an important cause of gastroenteritis, which can be severe at the extremes of ages. Data documenting the endemic burden of norovirus among children and elderly adults are lacking. Stool specimens submitted for clinical testing were collected from elderly (≥ 65 years) adults and children (<18 years) with acute vomiting and/or diarrhea seeking care at several metropolitan Atlanta adult and pediatric hospitals from January 2013-June 2013. Specimens were tested for norovirus with real-time RT-PCR and sequenced if norovirus was detected. Corresponding clinical and demographic data w

Seroprevalence of brucellosis in livestock within three endemic regions of the country of Georgia.

Brucellosis is the one of most common livestock zoonoses in Georgia, resulting in significant economic losses. Livestock were sampled in three regions of Georgia (Kakheti, Kvemo Kartli, Imereti). Districts that historically reported high numbers of brucellosis related morbidity were selected for serological, bacteriological and molecular surveys. Surveying efforts yielded samples from 10,819 large and small ruminants. In total, 735 serological tests were positive on Rose Bengal and 33 bacterial isolates were recovered and identified as Brucella melitensis or Brucella abortus by microbiology an

Human papillomavirus infection in women with and without cervical cancer in Tbilisi, Georgia.

BACKGROUND: No accurate estimates of cervical cancer incidence or mortality currently exist in Georgia. Nor are there any data on the population-based prevalence of high-risk (HR) human papillomavirus (HPV) infection, which, in the absence of good-quality screening, is known to correlate with cervical cancer incidence. METHODS: We obtained cervical cell specimens from 1309 women aged 18-59 years from the general population of Tbilisi, and also from 91 locally diagnosed invasive cervical cancers (ICC). DNA of 44 HPV types was tested for using a GP5+/6+-based PCR assay. RESULTS: In the general

Ecology of root-feeding beetles and their associated fungi on longleaf pine in Georgia.

Root-feeding beetles, particularly of the curculionid subfamilies Scolytinae and Molytinae, are known to be effective vectors of Ophiostomatoid fungi. Infestation by these insects and subsequent infection by the Ophiostomatoid fungi may play an important role in accelerating symptom progression in pine declines. To examine the relationship between beetles and fungi in longleaf pine stands, root-feeding curculionids were collected in pitfall traps baited with ethanol and turpentine for 62 wk, and Ophiostomatoid fungi were isolated from their body surfaces. The most abundant root-feeding beetles

Clapper rails as indicators of mercury and PCB bioavailability in a Georgia saltmarsh system.

Clapper rails (Rallus longirostris) were used as an indicator species of estuarine marsh habitat quality because of their strong site fidelity and predictable diet consisting of mostly benthic organisms. Mercury (Hg) and the polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) Aroclor 1268 concentrations were determined for sediments, crabs, as well as clapper rail adults and chicks collected from salt marshes associated with the LCP Superfund site in Brunswick, Georgia. Home ranges were established for adult rails, and sediment and crab samples were taken from each individual's range. The study was designed to min

Detection of Babesia and Anaplasma species in rabbits from Texas and Georgia, USA.

Rabbits have been shown to harbor a suite of zoonotic organisms, including a Babesia species, Borrelia burgdorferi, and Anaplasma phagocytophilum. In this study, we conducted a molecular survey for various tick-borne pathogens in three species of rabbits from Texas and Georgia. Of 18 black-tailed jackrabbits (Lepus californicus) tested from Texas, six (28%) were polymerase chain reaction (PCR) positive for Babesia, and nucleotide sequencing revealed two distinct species or strains. Two jackrabbits were infected with a Babesia species or strain (Babesia sp. A) that was nearly identical (99.9%)

Borderline tuberculoid leprosy in a woman from the state of Georgia with armadillo exposure.

In the southern and southeastern United States, the 9-banded armadillo is an important reservoir for Mycobacterium leprae, the causative agent of leprosy (Hansen's disease). Here, we describe a woman living in Georgia with borderline tuberculoid leprosy who worked for many years in a garden where armadillos burrowed or were buried. There was no history of foreign travel or known exposure to a person with leprosy. Treatment with 6 once-monthly combined doses of rifampin, ofloxacin, and minocycline was successful.

Fleas (Siphonaptera) of cotton mice on a Georgia barrier island: a depauperate fauna.

From February 1993 through October 1994, 382 cotton mice Peromyscus gossypinus were live-trapped and examined for fleas on St. Catherines Island, Liberty County, Georgia. Orchopeas leucopus was the only species of flea collected, with an overall prevalence of 27% and a mean intensity of 3.8. This flea was more abundant on cotton mice during the cooler months, with peak infestation indices recorded in March 1993 and in January 1994. Five species of fleas (Polygenis gwyni, Stenoponia americana, Ctenophthalmus pseudagyrtes, Peromyscopsylla scotti, and O. leucopus) were collected from 29 cotton mi

PREVALENCE, PHYLOGENETIC DIVERSITY, AND ANTIMICROBIAL RESISTANCE OF UROPATHOGENIC ESCHERICHIA COLI IN GEORGIA.

BACKGROUND: Uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC) represents the leading cause of urinary tract infections (UTIs) worldwide and remains a growing clinical concern due to increasing antimicrobial resistance. Data describing the molecular epidemiology of UPEC in Georgia are limited. METHODS: Ninety E. coli isolates obtained from patients with genitourinary infections were analyzed. Species identification was confirmed by 16S rRNA gene sequencing. UPEC strains were identified by PCR detection of virulence-associated genes (c3509, c3686 (yrbH), and chuA). Phylogenetic grouping was performed using

Knowledge, attitudes and practices of health care professionals towards pharmacovigilance in Georgia.

INTRODUCTION: Pharmacovigilance (PV) is fundamental for public health, focusing on the detection, evaluation, and prevention of adverse drug reactions (ADRs). ADRs significantly contribute to global morbidity and mortality. Healthcare professionals (HCPs) play a crucial role in ensuring drug safety, as their expertise is essential for the timely identification, management, and reporting of ADRs. Despite the importance of PV, underreporting remains a critical challenge, particularly in developing countries. The PV system in Georgia is ineffective and characterized by underreporting from healthc
