Mycoses in northeastern Brazil: epidemiology and prevalence of fungal species in 8 years of retrospective analysis in Alagoas.

Superficial and cutaneous mycoses are common in tropical countries, caused by dermatophytes, yeast, and non-dermatophyte molds in different clinical specimens. In order to define the epidemiology of mycoses and the profile of their etiological agents in Alagoas (northeastern Brazil) between 2009 and 2016, we obtained data of patients from the main laboratories of Alagoas, by examining clinical samples with direct microscopy and culture on Sabouraud dextrose agar and Chromagar®Candida. A total of 3316 patients were confirmed with mycoses (595 men/2716 women) and 40.25 of average age. Positive s

Malodorous compound production driven by microbial succession during Chinese cabbage decomposition.

BACKGROUND: Chinese cabbage is one of the most widely consumed vegetables in China. However, malodorous compounds generated from the decomposition of discarded leaves during harvest and distribution have become a significant environmental concern. This study aimed to identify the key odor compounds produced during Chinese cabbage decompostion and to characterize their associations with microbial community dynamics. RESULTS: Physicochemical monitoring showed declining total solids and sugars, rising soluble protein, and fluctuating total nitrogen. Gas chromatography-olfactometry-mass spectrome

Promising synergistic interactions and mixture optimization of safranal, crocin, and crocetin from Moroccan Crocus sativus L. with enhanced antimicrobial activity.

This study explores the antimicrobial activity of three principal bioactive constituents of Crocus sativus L.-safranal, crocin, and crocetin-using a simplex-centroid mixture design to evaluate their individual and synergistic effects. Twelve formulations were tested against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Candida albicans, and Geotrichum candidum. Minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) were determined via microdilution assays, and the results were fitted using special cubic regression models. The models exhibited strong predictive accuracy (R2 = 0.97-0.99). Safranal showed the highe

Microbial and Biochemical Analyses of High-Quality, Long-Ripened, Blue-Veined Cabrales Cheese.

Sixteen long-ripened, high-quality Cabrales cheeses from independent producers underwent a comprehensive biochemical and microbiological characterisation. Significant variations in total microbial counts and specific microbial groups were observed among the cheeses. A metataxonomic analysis identified 249 prokaryotic amplicon sequence variants (ASVs) and 99 eukaryotic ASVs, respectively, which were classified into 52 prokaryotic and 43 eukaryotic species. The predominant species included bacteria of the genera Tetragenococcus, Lactococcus (of which Lactococcus lactis was used as a starter), an

Microbial intervention improves pollutant removal and semi-liquid organo-mineral fertilizer production from olive mill wastewater sludge and rock phosphate.

Olive mill wastewater sludge (OMWS) represents a residual pollutant generated by the olive oil industry, often stored in exposed evaporation ponds, leading to contamination of nearby land and water resources. Despite its promising composition, the valorization of OMWS remains underexplored compared to olive mill wastewater (OMW). This study aims to identify potent native microbial species within OMWS suitable for bioremediation and its transformation into a high-value organic fertilizer. The microbial screening, based on assessing OMWS tolerance and phosphate solubilization properties in vitro

Molecular characterisation of Histoplasma capsulatum sensu lato from Ethiopian horses reveals two distinct phylogenetic clades.

Epizootic lymphangitis (EL) is a highly prevalent and contagious infectious disease affecting horses in many parts of Ethiopia caused by Histoplasma capsulatum sensu lato ('var. farciminosum'). In this study, 12 suspected isolates of H. capsulatum sensu lato or yeasts unidentified by conventional biochemical tests isolated from Ethiopian horses with EL were characterised by internal transcribed spacer sequencing. Six of the 12 isolates were identified to be members of H. capsulatum sensu lato and the other six were Pichia kudriavzevii (synonym: Candida krusei) (n = 3), Trichosporon asahii (n =

Invasive Fungal Infection Caused by Magnusiomyces capitatus in an Immunocompromised Pediatric Patient with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in Mexico City: A Case Report.

Magnusiomyces capitatus (also denominated “Geotrichum capitatum” and “the teleomorph stage of Saprochaete capitata”) mainly affects immunocompromised patients with hematological malignancies in rare cases of invasive fungal infections (IFIs). Few cases have been reported for pediatric patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), in part because conventional diagnostic methods do not consistently detect M. capitatus in infections. The current contribution describes a systemic infection in a 15-year-old female diagnosed with ALL. She arrived at the Children’s Hospital of Mexico City with a

Enhancing PET biocatalytic degradation using a surface-active metabolite formulation derived from Trichoderma asperellum PBW1.

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) pollution necessitates biotechnological strategies that enhance interaction between the hydrophobic surfaces of PET and microbial biocatalysts. In this study, we developed PBW1-SAMF, an operationally defined autoclaved surface-active metabolite formulation derived from Trichoderma asperellum PBW1, which was isolated from plastic-contaminated mangrove sediments in Malaysia. The analyses conducted using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy suggested that
