We fabricated a nanowire-channel intrinsically stretchable neuromorphic transistor (NISNT) that perceives both tactile and visual information and emulates neuromorphic processing capabilities. The device demonstrated excellent stretching endurance of 1000 stretch cycles while retaining stable electrical properties. The device was then applied as a multisensitive afferent nerve that processes information in parallel. Compatible with skin deformation, the devices are attached to fingers to serve as conformal strain sensors and neuromorphic information-processing units for gesture recognition. Th

Social interaction is impaired in schizophrenia, including the use of hand gestures, which is linked to poor social perception and outcome. Brain imaging suggests reduced neural activity in a left-lateralized frontoparietal network during gesture preparation; therefore, gesturing might be improved through facilitation of left hemispheric brain areas or via disruption of interhemispheric inhibition from the right homolog. This study tested whether repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) protocols would improve gesture performance in schizophrenia. This randomized, placebo-controlled

Anosognosia is a multifaceted syndrome characterized by a lack of awareness of motor, cognitive, or emotional deficits. While most studies have focused on basic motor disorders such as hemiplegia, only recently, the issue of whether anosognosia also concerns higher-order motor disorders like apraxia has been addressed. Here, we explore the existence of a specific form of anosognosia for apraxia in forty patients with uni-hemispheric vascular lesions. The patients were requested to imitate actions involving upper limb or bucco-facial body parts and then judge their performance. Successively, th

BACKGROUND: Children with sex chromosome trisomies (SCT) frequently show problems in language development. However, a clear description of the communicative patterns of these children is still lacking.
AIMS: To describe the first stages of language development in children with SCT in comparison with those in typically developing (TD) children. The purpose was to verify the existence of possible differences in communicative skills (in both vocal and gestural modality) and identify the presence of possible early predictors (i.e., low vocabulary size and low gesture production) of later language

PURPOSE: The authors aimed to compare gesture use in infants with autism with gesture use in infants with other developmental disabilities (DD) or typical development (TD).
METHOD: Children with autism (n = 43), DD (n = 30), and TD (n = 36) were recruited at ages 2 to 7 years. Parents provided home videotapes of children in infancy. Staff compiled video samples for 2 age intervals (9-12 and 15-18 months) and coded samples for frequency of social interaction (SI), behavior regulation (BR), and joint attention (JA) gestures.
RESULTS: At 9-12 months, infants with autism were less likely to use

BACKGROUND: Only few standardized apraxia scales are available and they do not cover all domains and semantic features of gesture production. Therefore, the objective of the present study was to evaluate the reliability and validity of a newly developed test of upper limb apraxia (TULIA), which is comprehensive and still short to administer.
METHODS: The TULIA consists of 48 items including imitation and pantomime domain of non-symbolic (meaningless), intransitive (communicative) and transitive (tool related) gestures corresponding to 6 subtests. A 6-point scoring method (0-5) was used (score

This study investigates lexical organization and lexical retrieval in children with Williams syndrome (WS), by examining both naming accuracy and accompanying use of gestures in a picture-naming task. Ten children with the genetic disorder of Williams syndrome (age range: 9.5-12.9) were compared with 20 typically developing children, 10 matched for chronological age (CA) and 10 for mental-age (MA). Lexical production was measured by administering the Boston Naming test (BNT). Older typically developing children performed significantly better than the other two groups. No differences in accurac

The present study aimed to ascertain the neuroanatomical basis of an influential neuropsychological model for upper limb apraxia [Rothi LJ, et al. The Neuropsychology of Action. 1997. Hove, UK: Psychology Press]. Regional cerebral blood flow was measured in healthy volunteers using H2 15O PET during performance of four tasks commonly used for testing upper limb apraxia, i.e., pantomime of familiar gestures on verbal command, imitation of familiar gestures, imitation of novel gestures, and an action-semantic task that consisted in matching objects for functional use. We also re-analysed data fr

The objective of this longitudinal study is to investigate the on-line interaction between praxis and linguistic abilities in a progressive aphasia case. During 3 years of evolution, procedural discourse of a progressive aphasic patient was videotaped five times, allowing us to analyze the progression of both language and gestural production as well as the interaction between these two. We anticipated that, in the absence of apraxia, the patient would compensate for her speech deficit by producing progressively more and more meaningful gestures. Our compensatory hypothesis was confirmed but th

Understanding whether non-human animals interpret human pointing as cooperative communication remains a central question in comparative cognition. Pointing is a foundational aspect of human communication, yet success in traditional object-choice tasks could theoretically reflect conditioned responses rather than comprehension of communicative intent. Recent work therefore focuses on testing flexible, spontaneous use of gestures in novel contexts. Here, we examined whether bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) could interpret a human point to solve a new problem in a modified "do-as-I-do" ta

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: Gesture impairments are increasingly recognized as a core feature of schizophrenia, apparent across different domains and gesture categories. However, the potential differential effects of specific symptom domains on distinct types of gestures are unknown. The current study aimed to investigate whether specific domains of negative symptoms (NS) and formal thought disorder (FTD) relate to different aspects of gesture performance in patients with schizophrenia.
STUDY DESIGN: Gesture accuracy was assessed using the well-established test of upper limb apraxia, which exa

INTRODUCTION: Previous research has shown that speech and gesture are integrated during comprehension, with differences in response times and electrophysiological activity observed between incongruent and congruent gesture-speech pairings. Beyond these incongruency effects, it remains unclear whether comprehenders use gestures to adapt or extend conventional interpretations for novel communicative purposes.
METHOD: The current study examined the bidirectional influence of speech and gesture by employing a novel levels-of-congruence paradigm, in which the same metaphor (e.g., Men are oaks) was

Objective. Upper-limb gesture identification is an important problem in the advancement of robotic prostheses. Prevailing research into classifying electromyographic (EMG) muscular data or electroencephalographic (EEG) brain data for this purpose is often limited in methodological rigour, the extent to which generalisation is demonstrated, and the granularity of gestures classified. This work evaluates three architectures for multimodal fusion of EMG & EEG data in gesture classification, including a novel Hierarchical strategy, in both subject-specific and subject-independent settings.Approach

AIM: Sensory substitution devices (SSDs) can convert environmental information into an accessible format for people who are blind or have low vision (pBLV). Yet, current SSDs often passively deliver all of the information available with limited user control, potentially leading to confusion and/or cognitive overload. To address this issue, this work proposes a selective, gesture-controlled system intended to improve information relevance and reduce cognitive overload.
METHODS: We present Point-To-Tell 2, a system that enables pBLV to privately and efficiently select which information to conve

The opioid epidemic in the United States has significantly impacted pregnant women with opioid use disorder (OUD), leading to increased health and social complications. This study explores the feasibility of using machine learning algorithms with consumer-grade smartwatches to identify medication-taking gestures. The research specifically focuses on treatments for OUD, investigating methadone and buprenorphine taking gestures. Participants (n = 16, all female university students) simulated medication-taking gestures in a controlled lab environment over two weeks, with data collected via Ticwat

Though the forearm is the focus of the prostheses, myoelectric control with the electrodes on the wrist is more comfortable for general consumers because of its unobtrusiveness and incorporation with the existing wrist-based wearables. Recently, deep learning methods have gained attention for myoelectric control but their performance is unclear on wrist myoelectric signals. This study compared the gesture recognition performance of myoelectric signals from the wrist and forearm between a state-of-the-art method, TDLDA, and four deep learning models, including convolutional neural network (CNN)

OBJECTIVE: Erroneous gesture execution is at the core of motor cognition difficulties in apraxia. While a taxonomy of errors may provide important information about the nature of the disorder, classifications are currently often inconsistent. This study aims to identify the error categories which distinguish apraxic from non-apraxic patients.
METHOD: Two groups of mixed (bucco-facial and limb) and bucco-facial apraxic patients suffering from stroke were compared to non-apraxic, left and right hemisphere damaged patients in tasks tapping the ability to perform limb and bucco-facial actions. Th

INTRODUCTION: Individuals with Down syndrome (DS) often stutter, which can affect their speech intelligibility. Previous research has shown that manual signs can enhance speech intelligibility and comprehensibility. It remains unclear to what extent spontaneous hand gestures, such as iconic and beat gestures, may enhance intelligibility and/or comprehensibility during utterances with stuttering events.
METHODS: Eleven individuals with DS who stutter provided video-recorded speech samples. From these samples, 60 utterances containing a stuttering event were selected. In half of them, the stutt

BACKGROUND: Action semantics have been investigated in relation to context violation but remain less examined in relation to the meaning of gestures. In the present study, we examined tool-gesture incongruity by event-related potentials (ERPs) and hypothesized that the component N400, a neural index which has been widely used in both linguistic and action semantic congruence, is significant for conditions of incongruence.
METHODS: Twenty participants performed a tool-gesture judgment task, in which they were asked to judge whether the tool-gesture pairs were correct or incorrect, for the purp

Schizophrenia patients present with a variety of impaired nonverbal communication skills. Performance of hand gestures is frequently impaired and associated with ratings of motor abnormalities. However, the impact of motor abnormalities to gesture performance remains unclear. To test the association between quantitative measures of motor behavior and qualitative ratings of gesture performance, we quantified movement parameters semi-automatically in videotaped recordings of gesture assessment. Thirty-one patients with schizophrenia (77.4%), schizophreniform (19.4%) or schizoaffective disorder (
