A comparison between transoral glottis-widening techniques for bilateral vocal fold immobility.

OBJECTIVE: Comparison of different endoscopic glottis-widening procedures designed for bilateral vocal cord immobility (BVCI) is a challenge. This is because a statistically efficient analysis and comparable clinical series is hard to obtain considering the variable aspects of the results and the evaluation methods. This study of a large number of cadaver larynges provides comparable, objective data for the evaluation of the possible postoperative breathing and voicing function. STUDY DESIGN: A morphometric study was performed on 50 male and 50 female larynges to compare the different suture

Microlaryngosurgery for benign posterior glottal lesions using a posterior glottis direct laryngoscope.

INTRODUCTION: Perirectal spacers reduce the radiotherapy (RT) dose delivered to the rectum, but their impact on treatment toxicity remains debated. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to synthesise emerging data (PROSPERO: CRD42024506380). MATERIAL AND METHODS: MEDLINE, Embase, Scopus, and Google Scholar were searched through 2024/08/18 for prospective randomised (RCT) and non-randomised trials evaluating the clinical outcomes of perirectal spacing in prostate cancer (PCa) patients. Random effects generalised linear mixed models were used to pool odds ratios (OR) for rectal adv

[25 years experience with glottis widening surgery in our clinic (author's transl)].

Between 1949 and 1974, 137 patients with bilateral vocal cord paralyses were operated upon in our Department. In 127 cases King's method of extralaryngeal lateral fixation of the vocal cord or a modification thereof was executed on one or both sides. The modification consisted of securing the lateral-fixating suture around the superior thyroid cornu. This produces an additional displacement of the vocal cord in the vertical plane which provides good respiratory function in spite of only moderate lateral displacement of the cord. In seven cases endolaryngeal arytaenoidectomies and submucus hemi

Fundamental and Practical Aspects of Airway Anatomy: From Glottis to Segmental Bronchus.

The surgical anatomy of the airways from the glottis to segmental bronchi is reviewed with a focused review on pertinent anatomic findings surrounding common surgical procedures. The knowledge of the anatomy of the trachea while performing tracheostomy, tracheal and sleeve carinal resection, and bronchoplastic procedures is addressed. Pertinent anatomic relationships as evident on common computed tomographic imagery are emphasized.

Importance of glottis landmarks for the assessment of cleft lip and palate speech intelligibility.

The present work explores the acoustic characteristics of articulatory deviations near g(lottis) landmarks to derive the correlates of cleft lip and palate speech intelligibility. The speech region around the g landmark is used to compute two different acoustic features, namely, two-dimensional discrete cosine transform based joint spectro-temporal features, and Mel-frequency cepstral coefficients. Sentence-specific acoustic models are built using these features extracted from the normal speakers' group. The mean log-likelihood score for each test utterance is computed and tested as the acoust

Negative pathology following endoscopic resection of T1a squamous carcinoma of the glottis.

Endoscopic CO(2) laser excision for T(1a) glottic cancer is a recognized treatment modality producing equivalent disease-free and voice results to external beam radiotherapy. On reviewing a series of 15 patients who had undergone endoscopic resection of a T(1a) glottic squamous cancer, it was noted that five patients had negative excisional pathology following the initial biopsy of an invasive squamous carcinoma. The histopathology of each patient's resected specimen was reviewed by a second pathologist who confirmed the accuracy of the results in all cases. We conclude that a significant numb

Assessment of the results of glottis-dilating operations using lung function tests.

Our aim was to obtain an objective evaluation of the airway before and after glottis-dilating operations utilizing lung function tests. The charts of 109 patients who underwent either reversible or irreversible glottis-dilating operations by Lichtenberger were reviewed. 64 nonselected cases of these patients, all with irreversible glottis-dilating operations, were studied. Lung function tests that were performed were body-pletysmography, forced inspiratory volume (FIV1), forced expiratory volume (FEV1), peak inspiratory flow rate (PIF), peak expiratory flow rate (PEF) and resistance of the air

Mucociliary transport pathway on laryngotracheal tract and stented glottis in guinea pigs.

We investigated the laryngotracheal mucociliary transport pathway of guinea pigs in vivo and immediately postmortem. Only intraperitoneal anesthesia was used during the procedure to avoid the disturbance of mucociliary function. Resin particles were used as the marking substance. A microcolpohysteroscope was placed at different levels in the laryngotracheal region for observing the marking particles and recording the transport pattern. The tracheal mucociliary transport flow primarily moved along the posterior wall and both lateral walls in a zigzag trace. Upon reaching the subglottis, the res

The view of the glottis at laryngoscopy after unexpectedly difficult placement of the laryngeal mask.

In 12 patients to whom a non-depolarising neuromuscular relaxant had been given and in whom placement of the laryngeal mask had failed unexpectedly, the view of the larynx at laryngoscopy and the ease of tracheal intubation were examined. The glottis was only partially seen at laryngoscopy in three patients and was not seen at all in another three patients. Tracheal intubation was difficult in three of them. It would appear that in some patients both placement of the laryngeal mask and tracheal intubation are difficult. It is thus inadvisable to paralyse patients electively and rely on the lar

Neuromuscular control of the glottis in a primitive air-breathing fish, Amia calva.

The neuromuscular control of the glottis, a muscular sphincter that controls air flow to and from the swim bladder, was investigated using in vitro preparations from bowfin (Amia calva). Stimulation of the ramus intestinalis branch of the vagus nerve caused an increase in isometric tension of the glottal musculature, indicating active closure. The glottis could be actively opened only by direct stimulation of muscle bundles lying lateral to the glottis. In 19 of 24 preparations supramaximal nerve stimulation (20 Hz, 10 V) caused a two-phase increase in muscle tension. Immediately after the ons

Development of laryngeal video stroboscope with laser marking module for dynamic glottis measurement.

Physicians clinically use laryngeal video stroboscope as an auxiliary instrument to test glottal diseases, and read vocal fold images and voice quality for diagnosis. As the position of vocal fold varies in each person, the proportion of the vocal fold size as presented in the vocal fold image is different, making it impossible to directly estimate relevant glottis physiological parameters, such as the length, area, perimeter, and opening angle of the glottis. Hence, this study designs an innovative laser projection marking module for the laryngeal video stroboscope to provide reference parame

A Real-time Scale-robust Network for Glottis Segmentation in Nasal Transnasal Intubation.

Nasotracheal intubation (NTI) is a critical clinical procedure for establishing and maintaining patient airway patency. Machine-assisted NTI has emerged as a pivotal approach for optimizing procedural efficiency and minimizing manual intervention. However, visual detection algorithms employed for NTI navigation encounter significant challenges, including complex anatomical environments and suboptimal illumination conditions surrounding the glottis. Additionally, the glottis presents considerable scale variability throughout the procedure, initially appearing as a small, difficult-to-capture st
