Intensive glycemic control in younger and older U.S. adults with type 2 diabetes.

AIMS: To determine the extent to which older vs. younger adults with diabetes intensively control glycemia. METHODS: Participants were age≥40years who self-reported a physician diagnosis of diabetes in the 2009-2014 National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (N=1554). Intensive glycemic control was defined as A1c<7.0% and taking insulin, sulfonylureas, or ≥2 glycemic medications. Logistic regression was used to determine the adjusted odds of intensive control in older (≥65years) vs. younger adults (age 40-64years). RESULTS: The prevalence of intensive control was greater for older (33

Serum Homocysteine and its Association with Glycemic Control in Type 2 Diabetic Patients.

In developing countries like Bangladesh the prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus is increasing day by day. Among the long-term complications of diabetes mellitus, vascular complications represent a major cause of morbidity and mortality. Hyperglycemia is still considered the principal cause of diabetes complications. Total plasma homocysteine (tHcy) is an emerging cardiovascular risk factor. Hyperhomocysteinemia independently appears to be a stronger risk factor for mortality than other risk factors in type 2 diabetes than in non diabetes. It may partly explain the link between microalbuminu

Effect of soy protein isolate preload on postprandial glycemic control in healthy humans.

OBJECTIVE: Premeal consumption of whey protein improves the postmeal glycemic profile, but little information exists on soy protein. The study aim was to examine the effect of consuming different amounts of a soy protein isolate (SPI) before a 75-g oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) on subsequent glycemic control. METHODS: After overnight fasting, eight healthy young subjects consumed a 400-mL liquid meal containing 0 g (SP0), 20 g (SP20) or 40 g (SP40) SPI. Thirty minutes after SPI consumption, an OGTT was performed to evaluate the individual glycemic response. Blood glucose and plasma insul

Association of Diabetic Neuropathy with Duration of Type 2 Diabetes and Glycemic Control.

INTRODUCTION: Diabetes mellitus is associated with severe microvascular and macrovascular complications with major implications for public health. Diabetic neuropathy is a very problematic complication of diabetes mellitus. It is associated with severe morbidity, mortality, and a huge economic burden. The present study was designed with two aims: 1) to analyze the association of diabetic neuropathy with the glycemic index (levels of fasting blood glucose, random blood glucose, and Hb1Ac) in patients with Type 2 diabetes, and 2) to analyze the association of diabetic neuropathy with time passed

Sotagliflozin improves glycemic control in nonobese diabetes-prone mice with type 1 diabetes.

PURPOSE: Oral agents are needed that improve glycemic control without increasing hypoglycemic events in patients with type 1 diabetes (T1D). Sotagliflozin may meet this need, because this compound lowers blood glucose through the insulin-independent mechanisms of inhibiting kidney SGLT2 and intestinal SGLT1. We examined the effect of sotagliflozin on glycemic control and rate of hypoglycemia measurements in T1D mice maintained on a low daily insulin dose, and compared these results to those from mice maintained in better glycemic control with a higher daily insulin dose alone. Glycemic control is impaired in the evening in prediabetes through multiple diurnal rhythms.

AIMS: Recent studies suggest that circadian rhythms regulate glucose metabolism, weight loss, and even drug efficacy. Moreover, molecules targeted at the circadian clock show promise in treating metabolic disease. Therefore, this study set out to better characterize interactions among diurnal rhythms in prediabetes. METHODS: Ten subjects with prediabetes completed oral glucose tolerance tests at 0700h and 1900h on the same day. Lipids and hormones were also measured. RESULTS: Two-hour and three-hour glucose tolerances were worse in the evening by 40±52mg/dl (p=0.02) and 62±46mg/dl (p=0.001),

Gastroesophageal reflux disease is inversely related with glycemic control in morbidly obese patients.

BACKGROUND: The link between diabetes mellitus and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is controversial. We assessed the relationship between glycemic control (GC) and GERD in morbidly obese patients. METHODS: Consecutive patients with morbid obesity (n = 86) underwent manometry, pH-metry, endoscopy, and contrasted X-ray after responding to a GERD questionnaire and dosing fasting plasma glucose (FPG) and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c). Patients with poor GC (HbA1c, 6.1-10% and FPG < 140 mg/dl) and those with very poor GC (HbA1c > 10% or FPG > 140 mg/dl) were compared. RESULTS: There were 63

Safer glycemic control using isomaltulose-based enteral formula: a pilot randomized crossover trial.

PURPOSE: Preventing harmful hyperglycemia is important in critical illness. However, insulin therapy increases the risk of hypoglycemia. In patients with diabetes, isomaltulose-based enteral formula (IF) feeding has been shown to reduce glycemia. This randomized controlled crossover study was conducted to determine whether IF feeding improves glycemia in postoperative critically ill patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Eight patients who developed hyperglycemia (>150 mg/dL) after esophagectomy were included. Patients were randomized to either the IF or the standard feeding formula (SF) arm. The factors affecting glycemic control in Japanese adolescents with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

The factors affecting glycemic control were examined using HbA(1C) as an index in a total of 22 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus whose ages at onset were less than 18 years old. As a result, the presence or absence of the following cases were considered possible factors for significant exacerbation of glycemic control: diabetic microangiopathy; school phobia or nonworking situation; drug therapy; use of more than two kinds of oral hypoglycemic agents (OHAs) or insulin for the drug therapy cases. No improvement in glycemic control could be achieved even by increasing the number of OHAs fo

Pancreas Size and Fat Content Increase during Pregnancy and Correlate with Glycemic Control.

OBJECTIVE: The pancreas plays a critical role in adapting to the increased metabolic demands and insulin resistance of pregnancy. In rodents, beta cell proliferation during pregnancy induces pancreas growth, but whether similar changes occur in the human pancreas remains unknown. This study characterizes longitudinal changes in the size and composition of the pancreas during pregnancy and postpartum, and examines correlations with breastfeeding, adiposity, and metabolic assays. STUDY DESIGN: Sixty-one pregnant women were followed up to three visits during pregnancy (15, 25, and 35 weeks) and

Chronic Inflammation and Glycemic Control: Exploring the Bidirectional Link Between Periodontitis and Diabetes.

Periodontitis and diabetes mellitus are two highly prevalent chronic conditions that share a bidirectional relationship, significantly impacting public health. Periodontitis, a gum inflammation caused by microbial dysbiosis, aggravates glycemic control in diabetics, while uncontrolled diabetes heightens periodontitis severity. These conditions create a vicious cycle, where inflammation and microbial dysbiosis mutually drive disease progression, exacerbating systemic health. The underlying mechanisms involve inflammation, immune dysfunction, and microbial dysbiosis, with both diseases contribut

Relationship Between Sleep Quality and Glycemic Control Among Patients With Type 2 Diabetes.

BACKGROUND: The quality of sleep has been identified as a significant contributor to the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), particularly in achieving optimal blood glucose levels. Although previous research globally has acknowledged this relationship, there is a lack of adequate studies in low- and middle-income countries, such as Pakistan. The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between self-management behavior (as indicated by glycemic control) and sleep quality among individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). METHODS: This study is a cross-sectional

Periodontal markers predict glycemic control in diabetic patients a ten year retrospective analysis.

The synergistic and detrimental interplay between diabetes mellitus and periodontitis poses a significant health burden. This study aimed to rigorously evaluate the association between routinely documented clinical periodontal parameters and glycemic control (as measured by HbA1c) in a cohort of diabetic patients attending Al-Kufa University College of Dentistry over a decade. A further objective was to develop and internally validate a multivariable predictive model for estimating HbA1c based on these readily accessible markers. A retrospective cohort study design was employed, analyzing pati
