The Effects of Dietary Nutrition Intake on Glycemic Variability in Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus Adults.

INTRODUCTION: Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) is characterized by an absolute deficiency of insulin and dependence on insulin therapy. Therefore, glycemic control and management are important for T1DM patients, particularly glycemic variability, which is associated with the development of diabetic complications. However, insufficient attention has been paid to the glycemic variability in T1DM patients so far. Our objective was to identify the effects of food intake on glycemic variability in T1DM patients. METHODS: This was a single-center study that took place in the outpatient clinics of Pe

Association between triglyceride-glucose index and stages of T2DM: potential indirect effects of inflammatory indicators.

BACKGROUND: The triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index is a reliable surrogate marker of insulin resistance and has been closely linked to type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) risk. However, it remains unclear whether the TyG index is nonlinearly associated with cross-sectional glycemic status categories, from normal glucose to T2DM, and whether inflammatory indicators may partly account for this association. We therefore aimed to examine this nonlinear association and to estimate potential indirect associations through inflammatory indicators. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of cross-sectional data w

Glycemic Load, Dietary Fiber, Added Sugar, and Spontaneous Abortion in Two Preconception Cohorts.

BACKGROUND: Spontaneous abortion (SAB)-pregnancy loss before the 20th week of gestation-has adverse psychological and physical sequelae. Some medical conditions known to affect insulin sensitivity, including polycystic ovary syndrome and diabetes, can affect the risk of SAB. No prior studies have examined glycemic load and incidence of SAB in populations without conditions known to affect insulin sensitivity. OBJECTIVES: We prospectively evaluated the association between preconception glycemic load and intake of carbohydrates, dietary fiber, and added sugar and risk of SAB. METHODS: During 2

Periodontal and glycemic effects of nonsurgical periodontal therapy in patients with type 2 diabetes stratified by baseline HbA1c.

We evaluated the effects of nonsurgical periodontal therapy in 100 patients with type 2 diabetes and chronic periodontitis. The participants were classified as having good (n = 48) or poor (n = 52) glycemic control and were further randomly allocated to receive either scaling and root planning treatment group or no treatment (n = 50 each). The effect of nonsurgical periodontal therapy was compared among diabetic patients with good glycemic control, those with poor glycemic control, and 25 nondiabetic individuals. Periodontal and metabolic status was recorded at baseline, 3 months, and 6 months

Changes in circulating miRNAs in healthy overweight and obese subjects: Effect of diet composition and weight loss.

BACKGROUND: MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small non-coding RNA molecules that can play an important role in several chronic metabolic conditions, including obesity. However, to date little is known about how they are regulated. Weight loss induced by surgical procedures has been effective at modulating specific circulating miRNAs, but the effect of energy-restricted diets with different macronutrient compositions on circulating miRNAs is not well understood. The objective of the present analysis was to explore the effect of three energy-restricted diets of different macronutrient composition and carb

Effects of different fatty acids on the structure, physicochemical properties, and in vitro digestibility of Chinese yam resistant starch-lipid complexes.

Nine CYRS-FA complexes were prepared by resistant starch in Chinese yam (CYRS) and nine fatty acids (FAs) with different chain lengths and degrees of unsaturation. CYRS-myristic acid and CYRS-palmitic acid showed higher complexing index (CI) and relative crystallinity (RC); CYRS-myristic acid and CYRS-oleic acid exhibited lower estimated glycemic index (eGI). Chain lengths of FAs showed significantly positive correlations with CI and contact angle (CA), and yet, unsaturation degree of FAs was negative correlated with both CI and CA. The eGI exhibited positive relations with solubility, and neg

Dietary Glycaemic Index Labelling: A Global Perspective.

The glycaemic index (GI) is a food metric that ranks the acute impact of available (digestible) carbohydrates on blood glucose. At present, few countries regulate the inclusion of GI on food labels even though the information may assist consumers to manage blood glucose levels. Australia and New Zealand regulate GI claims as nutrition content claims and also recognize the GI Foundation's certified Low GI trademark as an endorsement. The GI Foundation of South Africa endorses foods with low, medium and high GI symbols. In Asia, Singapore's Healthier Choice Symbol has specific provisions for low

Dietary Management of Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus with Celiac Disease.

Celiac disease is diagnosed more commonly with type 1 diabetes, and the most problematic aspect for a child with type 1 diabetes and celiac disease is that most GFD foods have a high glycemic index, while low glycemic index foods are recommended for type 1 diabetes mellitus. As a result, dietary controls become more difficult. Diet management could improve the elevated HbA1c levels. The aim of this review is to illustrate the clinical features and diagnostic considerations, as well as current knowledge of common pathogenic features such as genetics, environmental risk factors, and the gut micr

Evaluation of healthy and sensory indexes of sweetened beverages using an electronic tongue.

Overconsumption of sugar-sweetened beverages may increase the risk of health problems and so, the evaluation of their glycemic load and fructose-intolerance level is essential since it may allow establishing possible relations between physiologic effects of sugar-rich beverages and health. In this work, an electronic tongue was used to accurately classify beverages according to glycemic load (low, medium or high load) as well to their adequacy for people suffering from fructose malabsorption syndrome (tolerable or not): 100% of correct classifications (leave-one-out cross-validation) using lin

Poor glycemic control impairs oral health in children with type 1 diabetes mellitus - a systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: There are more than one million children and adolescents living with type 1 diabetes mellitus, and their number is steadily increasing. Diabetes affects oral health through numerous channels, including hyposalivation, immune suppression, and the inflammatory effect of glycation end-products. However, patients with type 1 diabetes must follow a strict sugar free diet that is proven to be carioprotective. Therefore, the aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis is to investigate whether children with type 1 diabetes have a difference in Decayed, Missing, Filled Teeth index (DMFT

Prediction of in-vitro glycemic responses of biscuits in an engineered small intestine system.

The Glycemic Index (GI) indicates the effect of a food product on the increase/decrease in postprandial blood glucose levels. Monitoring the glycemic response is important, as it is associated with the human nutrition absorption. However, human or animal blood sampling involves financial, ethical, and other challenges. Accordingly, in the recent past, many human digestion models have been developed to understand the intricate changes that occur during human digestion and absorption processes. Dynamic models help in studying the digestion mechanics and hypotheses related to the health effects o
