The risk of the waterborne toxicity caused by herbicides threatens the aquatic environment. In this study, propolis nanoparticles were shown to relieve the impacts of glyphosate-induced oxidative stress and immunosuppression in Nile tilapia. The control group was fed a basal diet and maintained in a glyphosate-free water (control). Simultaneously, the other three groups were exposed to sublethal concentrations of glyphosate (0.6 mg/L) and fed diets containing 0 and 10 g propolis and 10 g propolis nanoparticles for 4 weeks. Nile tilapia exposed to glyphosate for 2 and 4 weeks exhibited a signif

At present, the public is paying more attention to the adverse effects of pesticides on human and animal health and the environment. Glyphosate is a broad-spectrum pesticide that is widely used in agricultural production. In this manuscript, the effects of diets containing glyphosate on intestinal morphology, intestinal immune factors, intestinal antioxidant capacity and the mRNA expression associated with the Nrf2 signaling pathway were investigated in weaned piglets. Twenty-eight healthy female hybrid weaned piglets (Duroc × Landrace × Yorkshire) were randomly selected with an average weight

The immune system of snails is highly sensitive to pollutants, which can suppress its immune response. We investigated the effects of exposure to the glyphosate-based herbicide Roundup® Original on the snail Biomphalaria glabrata infected by the platyhelminth Echinostoma paraensei by evaluating changes in the snail's internal defense system. Four cohorts were studied: control group, infected snails, snails treated with Roundup®, and snails infected and treated with Roundup®. The hemocyte viability was assessed, morphological differentiation of cells was observed and flow cytometry was performe

Glyphosate (PMG) wastewater with 40-600 mg/L organic phosphorus (OP) and 1-4% CH2O was treated by catalytic wet oxidation (CWO) and the lime-catalyzed formose reaction to remove total phosphorus (TP) and improve biodegradability. Activated carbons (ACs) modified by H2O2 oxidation and thermal treatment with melamine were used as CWO catalysts and characterized by N2 adsorption/desorption and XPS. The CWO experiments were performed in an autoclave reactor at 110-130 °C and 1.0 MPa. The modified AC showed higher catalytic activity than the parent AC due to the introduction of nitrogen-containing

A simplified mathematical model to describe the oxidative degradation of glyphosate employing hydrogen peroxide and UV radiation was developed based on a sequence of predominant reactions. The kinetics obtained include all the required significant variables. Consequently, not only were concentration dependencies examined but also the influence of a detailed spatial description of the radiation field was included as part of the modeling. The kinetic parameters were obtained by comparing the simulation concentrations obtained with the model with the experimental values gathered in the laboratory

Glyphosate-based herbicides are the number one pesticide in the United States and are used commonly around the world. Understanding the affects of glyphosate-based herbicides on non-target wildlife, for example amphibians, is critical for evaluation of regulations pertaining to the use of such herbicides. Additionally, it is important to understand how variation in biotic and abiotic environmental conditions, such as UV-B light regime, could potentially affect how glyphosate-based herbicides interact with non-target species. This study used artificial pond mesocosms to identify the effects of

The degradation of phosphonates in the natural environment constitutes a major route by which orthophosphate (Pi) is regenerated from organic phosphorus and recently implicated in marine methane production, with ramifications to environmental pollution issues and global climate change concerns. This work explores the application of stable oxygen isotope analysis in elucidating the CP bond cleavage mechanism(s) of phosphonates by UV photo-oxidation and for tracing their sources in the environment. The two model phosphonates used, glyphosate and phosphonoacetic acid were effectively degraded aft

Bacterial strains capable of utilizing methylphosphonic acid (MP) or glyphosate (GP) as the sole sources of phosphorus were isolated from soils contaminated with these organophosphonates. The strains isolated from MP-contaminated soils grew on MP and failed to grow on GP. One group of the isolates from GP-contaminated soils grew only on MP, while the other one grew on MP and GP. Strains Achromobacter sp. MPS 12 (VKM B-2694), MP degraders group, and Ochrobactrum anthropi GPK 3 (VKM B-2554D), GP degraders group, demonstrated the best degradative capabilities towards MP and GP, respectively, and

Reviews on the safety of glyphosate and Roundup herbicide that have been conducted by several regulatory agencies and scientific institutions worldwide have concluded that there is no indication of any human health concern. Nevertheless, questions regarding their safety are periodically raised. This review was undertaken to produce a current and comprehensive safety evaluation and risk assessment for humans. It includes assessments of glyphosate, its major breakdown product [aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA)], its Roundup formulations, and the predominant surfactant [polyethoxylated tallow ami

Pesticide mixture exposure during critical developmental windows is a growing public health concern, given their potential additive or synergistic effects on the male reproductive system. This study aimed to evaluate whether developmental exposure to a mixture of propiconazole (PRO) and glyphosate (GLY) alters the postpubertal rat prostate. Pregnant rats were orally exposed to vehicle (saline) or a mixture of PRO and GLY (4 mg PRO/kg/day and 3.7 mg GLY/kg/day) from gestation day 9 until weaning. On postnatal day 60, male offspring were euthanized, and the prostate and serum samples were collec

The decision by the co-Editor-in-Chief of Regulatory Toxicology and Pharmacology, Prof. Martin van den Berg, to retract the 2000 review article by Williams, Kroes, and Munro has elicited widespread criticism within the scientific community. Issued in late 2025, the retraction decision cites procedural concerns including potential ghostwriting, undisclosed conflicts of interest, and omission of certain unpublished studies, invoking Committee on Publication Ethics guidelines despite lacking evidence of fraud or scientific flaws. This editorial argues that the retraction decision involves editori

Drugs and pesticide residues in broiler feed can compromise the therapeutic and production benefits of antibiotic (ANT) application and affect gene expression. In this study, we analyzed the expression of 13 key pancreatic genes and blood physiology parameters after administering one maximum residue limit of herbicide glyphosate (GLY), two ANTs, and one anticoccidial drug (AD). A total of 260 Ross 308 broilers aged 1-40 d were divided into the following four groups of 65 birds each: control group, which was fed the main diet (MD), and three experimental groups, which were fed MD supplemented

The increasingly severe glyphosate pollution poses a serious threat to human and environmental safety, and Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are regarded as promising adsorbents due to their unique structure properties. Molecular simulation studies provide a rapid method for identifying candidate materials and elucidating the interaction mechanisms between adsorbents and target compounds at the molecular level. In this study, Grand Canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC), Molecular Dynamics (MD), and Density Functional Theory (DFT) were employed to evaluate the adsorption capacity and diffusion behavior of

Roundup® (R), while it is the most used herbicide globally, and its residues are ubiquitous in urban and suburban areas, its impact on vertebrates' safety remains highly debated. Here, in three in vitro experiments, we investigated the effects of a very low dose (1 ppm) of R on the fertilization capacity and embryo development in cattle. In the first experiment, frozen-thawed bull semen exposed to R for 1 h exhibited reduced motility parameters but unaffected fertilization ability. However, after in vitro fertilization, the rates of embryo formation were significantly lower compared to the unt

Widespread glyphosate contamination in the environment and its endocrine-disrupting potential are concerning. However, evidence of glyphosate's effects on glycemic health is limited. To examine the association between glyphosate and glucose homeostasis in the general US population, a total of 3038 individuals were enrolled from the 2013-2016 cycles of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Survey-weighted linear regression and restricted cubic spline curves were used to detect the associations between glyphosate and glycemic disorders. The effects of interactions betwee

The co-occurrence of glyphosate (GPS), a commonly used organophosphorus herbicide, and cadmium (Cd), a neurotoxic metal, in agricultural environments prompts concerns about their combined toxic effects on ecosystems. This study explores the combined effects of GPS and Cd on the model organism Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans), to understand their cumulative effects in organismal living environments. We investigated the interaction between GPS and Cd over 24 hours using a comprehensive approach that included a variety of toxicity endpoints as well as the novel Automated Recognition and Statis

Comparative toxicology continues to provide information on how the age of every living organism affects the frequency, severity, and nature of the potentially toxic agent. We investigated the effect of glyphosate-based herbicide (GBH) exposure on gametes and four developmental stages of Clarius gariepinus (C. gariepinus) (African Catfish). Gametes from healthy gravid female and mature male C. gariepinus were exposed to GBH in sublethal concentrations of 0.0 (G1, control), 0.02 (G2), 0.05 (G3), 0.1 (G4), 0.5 (G5), and 1.0 (G6) mg/L for 24 h at the standard conditions of temperature and water qu

Glyphosate (GLY) is the most widely used non-selective broad-spectrum herbicide worldwide under well-reported side effects on the environment and human health. That's why it's necessary to control its presence in the environment. This work describes the development of an affordable, simple, and accurate electrochemical biosensor using a pencil graphite electrode as support, a horseradish peroxidase enzyme immobilized on a polysulfone membrane doped with multi-walled carbon nanotubes. The developed electrochemical sensor was used in the determination of GLY in river and drinking water samples.

Glyphosate-based herbicides (GBH) are the most widely used herbicide for treatment of crops in the world. The digestive tract is one of the first systems exposed to pesticides, and damage to this system can affect the general health of individuals. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of subchronic inhalation and oral exposure to GBH on the digestive tract in rats. Six groups of Wistar rats (male and female) were exposed to nebulization with three concentrations of GBH [3.71 × 10-3 grams of active ingredient per hectare (g.a.i./ha), 6.19 × 10-3 g.a.i./ha and 9.28 × 10-3 g.a.i./ha]

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a chronic and progressive neurodegenerative disorder. Epidemiological studies suggest that the exposure of the herbicide glyphosate may influence the development of PD in humans. In this study, we examined whether the exposure of glyphosate can affect the reduction of dopamine transporter (DAT) in the striatum and tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) in the substantial nigra (SNr) of mouse brain after repeated administration of 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP). Repeated injections of MPTP (10 mg/kg × 3, 2-h interval) significantly decreased the density of DA
