Effects of agmatine, interleukin-10, and cyclosporin on spontaneous pain behavior after excitotoxic spinal cord injury in rats.

Intraspinal injection of the AMPA/metabotropic receptor agonist quisqualic acid (QUIS) results in a pathophysiology that leads to excessive grooming behavior, which has been proposed as a model of spontaneous at-level pain after spinal cord injury (SCI). To further characterize the onset and progression of this behavior we evaluated the effects of 3 drugs, agmatine (Agm), interleukin-10 (IL-10), and cyclosporin A (CsA), on different characteristics of this behavior. In these experiments rats were given saline, Agm, CsA10, or CsA20 once daily for 14 days (or a single injection of IL-10) startin

Social contact behaviors are associated with infection status for Trichuris sp. in wild vervet monkeys (Chlorocebus pygerythrus).

Social grooming in the animal kingdom is common and serves several functions, from removing ectoparasites to maintaining social bonds between conspecifics. We examined whether time spent grooming with others in a highly social mammal species was associated with infection status for gastrointestinal parasites. Of six parasites detected, one (Trichuris sp.) was associated with social grooming behaviors, but more specifically with direct physical contact with others. Individuals infected with Trichuris sp. spent significantly less time grooming conspecifics than those not infected, and time in di

Behavioral study of non-evoked orofacial pain following different types of infraorbital nerve injury in rats.

Directed isolated face grooming following unilateral chronic constriction injury to the infraorbital nerve (IoN-CCI) is a unique measure of spontaneous neuropathic pain. Variability between rats and the limited duration of the increased face grooming behavior has hampered its usefulness. We studied three possible sources of variability: variations in surgery, pre-existing differences in nocifensive behavior between the rats and variation in time. Three different types of IoN lesion were performed: loose ligation (CCI), tight ligation (CCI-T) and partial tight ligation (PTL, Seltzer method); th

Midbrain dopamine neurons arbiter OCD-like behavior.

The neurobiological understanding of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) includes dysregulated frontostriatal circuitry and altered monoamine transmission. Repetitive stereotyped behavior (e.g., grooming), a featured symptom in OCD, has been proposed to be associated with perturbed dopamine (DA) signaling. However, the precise brain circuits participating in DA's control over this behavioral phenotype remain elusive. Here, we identified that DA neurons in substantia nigra pars compacta (SNc) orchestrate ventromedial striatum (VMS) microcircuits as well as lateral orbitofrontal cortex (lOFC) du

Epilepsy, compulsion and oxytocin: Insights from behavioral sequences, using neuroethology and complexity systems approaches.

Epilepsies are complex neurological entities usually co-existing with neuropsychiatric comorbidities. We already demonstrated that microinjection of oxytocin (OT) into the central nucleus of amygdala (CeA) induces hypergrooming in Wistar rats, a model of compulsion. Furthermore, the Wistar Audiogenic Rat (WAR) strain is a genetic model of generalized tonic-clonic seizures. Here we quantified grooming behavior in WAR, with grooming scores, flowcharts and directed graphs of syntactic and non-syntactic grooming chains, after bilateral administration of OT or saline (SAL) into the CeA. Our current

Ketamine increases activity of a fronto-striatal projection that regulates compulsive behavior in SAPAP3 knockout mice.

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), characterized by intrusive thoughts (obsessions) and repetitive behaviors (compulsions), is associated with dysfunction in fronto-striatal circuits. There are currently no fast-acting pharmacological treatments for OCD. However, recent clinical studies demonstrated that an intravenous infusion of ketamine rapidly reduces OCD symptoms. To probe mechanisms underlying ketamine's therapeutic effect on OCD-like behaviors, we used the SAPAP3 knockout (KO) mouse model of compulsive grooming. Here we recapitulate the fast-acting therapeutic effect of ketamine on co

Structure-activity studies on neurobehavioral effects of bombesin (BB) and gastrin releasing peptide (GRP).

In the present study, we evaluated and compared effects of BB, GRP and related C-terminal fragments on body temperature and grooming. Peptides were administered into the left cerebral ventricle of rats. Body temperature and grooming behavior were assessed over a 2 hr period following injections. All peptides significantly decreased body temperature and increased grooming behavior of animals. However, important differences in potency, efficacy and duration of action were found between BB, GRP and their fragments.

Pubic hair preferences, reasons for removal, and associated genital symptoms: comparisons between men and women.

INTRODUCTION: Pubic hair grooming and removal are common behaviors among men and women. However, little is known about the reasons for grooming, preferred pubic hairstyle of sexual partners, and symptoms associated with regular grooming. AIMS: This study aims to assess pubic hair removal/grooming practices, pubic hairstyle preferences, and genital outcomes associated with pubic hair removal among men and women in a college sample. METHODS: Data were gathered from 1,110 participants (671 women and 439 men) at a large public Midwestern university and a small Southern public university. MAIN O

Network analysis highlights socio-demographic patterns of stone tool-using primates.

While the nutritional benefits and social learning of tool use in primates have been widely studied, far less is known about how tool use is associated with social life. We investigated the social aspects of tool use in a hybrid population of long-tailed macaques (Macaca fascicularis aurea × M. f. fascicularis) on Koram Island, Thailand, comprising both stone tool users and non-users. To assess potential socio-demographic patterns, we examined whether tool use differed between sexes and whether it was related to variation in dominance rank. Using social network analyses, we assessed whether to

Early postnatal hypoxia induces behavioral deficits but not morphological damage in the hippocampus in adolescent rats.

Hypoxia is one of the major pathological factors affecting brain function. The aim of the present study was to describe the effect of neonatal hypobaric hypoxia on the behavior of rats and to analyze its effect on hippocampal neurodegeneration. Hypobaric hypoxia at a simulated altitude of 9000 m was induced for one hour in neonatal rat pups (PND7 and PND9) of both sexes. Subsequently, the rats underwent behavioral testing on PND25 and PND35 using a LABORAS apparatus to assess spontaneous behavior. Hypoxia did not cause any morphological damage in the hippocampus of rats. However, hypoxia on PN

Essential oils in the management of the donkey louse, Bovicola ocellatus.

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: Chewing lice are widespread and clinically compromising parasites of livestock and equids. Their management is complicated by growing levels of resistance to commonly applied insecticides. Hence, the development of novel approaches to their control is of major clinical interest. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of incorporating the essential oils of tea tree and lavender into a grooming programme for populations of donkeys with natural infestations of Bovicola ocellatus in the UK and Ireland when louse populations were at their winter seasonal peak. L-NAME bidirectionally modulates the behavioral consequences of acute sleep restriction in chronically stressed mice: A hole-board analysis.

This study investigated the mediating role of the nitric oxide (NO) system in the behavioral interplay between chronic stress and acute sleep restriction. Using the hole-board test in mice, we first established that four weeks of chronic restraint stress (CRS) reliably induced an anxiety-like phenotype, characterized by reduced head-dipping, and also decreased grooming behavior. A subsequent 3 h sleep restriction (SR) significantly prevented this anxiety-like suppression of head-dipping, restoring exploratory behavior to control levels, while also reversing the stress-induced reduction in groo

Behavioral effects of bombesin administration in rats.

Bombesin (BBS, 0.1-4.0 micrograms) administered to the lateral cerebral ventricle (IVT) of rats decreased food intake and feeding behavior. Grooming behavior increased and resting behavior decreased as doses greater than or equal to 0.01 microgram. IVT BBS (4.0 micrograms) caused greater suppression of food-deprivation-induced food intake and feeding behavior than the same dose and volume administered intraperitoneally (IP). After IVT BBS, rats displayed more grooming and less resting than normal, but after IP BBS, rats displayed a normal frequency of grooming and more resting. IVT BBS (greate

Social hair pulling in captive rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta).

Alopecia is common among captive populations of nonhuman primates. There are many potential causes of alopecia, including physiological conditions such as hormonal imbalance and infection, features of the captive environment such as housing type, ground substrate, and group density, as well as behavioral abnormalities such as self-plucking. A potential behavioral cause of alopecia in group-housed primates is social hair pulling, where one animal pulls hair from a conspecific. While social hair pulling has been conflated with overgrooming in some of the alopecia literature, other authors have c

Vasopressin-dependent flank marking in golden hamsters is suppressed by drugs used in the treatment of obsessive-compulsive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Alterations in arginine vasopressin regulation and secretion have been proposed as one possible biochemical abnormality in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder. In golden hamsters, arginine vasopressin microinjections into the anterior hypothalamus trigger robust grooming and flank marking, a stereotyped scent marking behaviors. The intensity and repetition of the behaviors induced by arginine vasopressin is somewhat reminiscent of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder in humans. The present experiments were carried out to test whether pharmacological agents used to alleviate obsess

Evaluation of the antipsychotic potential of aqueous fraction of Securinega virosa root bark extract in mice.

Securinega virosa (Roxb ex. Willd) Baill. is a plant which is commonly used in African traditional medicine in management of mental illness. Previous study showed that the crude methanolic root bark extract of the plant possesses antipsychotic activity. In this study, the antipsychotic potential of the residual aqueous fraction of the plant was evaluated using two experimental models, apomorphine induced stereotypic climbing behaviour and swim induced grooming, all in mice. The effect of the fraction on haloperidol-induced catalepsy was also evaluated. The fraction significantly reduced the me

Behavioural evidence for cholecystokinin-dopamine D1 receptor interactions in the rat.

The effects of cholecystokinin (CCK) on behavioural responses to the dopamine D1 receptor agonist (+/- )SKF 38393 ((+/- )-2,3,4,5-tetrahydro-7,8- dihydroxy-1-phenyl-1H-3-benzazepine HCl) were studied in the rat. SKF 38393 (5 mg/kg s.c.) induced stereotyped grooming and vacuous chewing movements. Both responses were inhibited by CCK-8S (10-50 micrograms/kg i.p.), but the preferential CCKB receptor agonist CCK-4 (20-100 micrograms/kg i.p.) attenuated SKF 38393-induced grooming only. Suppression of SKF 38393-induced grooming and vacuous chewing movements by CCK-8S was blocked by the selective CCK

Changes in behavioural responses to the combined administration of D1 and D2 dopamine agonists in normosensitive and D1 supersensitive rats.

The selective D1 receptor stimulant SKF 38393 dose-dependently increased grooming time in rats without affecting locomotor activity or eliciting stereotyped behaviour. The selective D2 receptor agonist LY 171555 induced a dose-dependent increase in rat motility, a marked decrease in grooming time and a low occurrence of stereotyped behaviour. Concurrent administration of the two selective agonists induced high-degree stereotyped responses and reductions in locomotor and grooming behaviours. Rats withdrawn from repeated treatment with the selective D1 receptor blocker SCH 23390 (0.05 mg/kg twic

Effects of environmental enrichment on repetitive behaviors in the BTBR T+tf/J mouse model of autism.

Lower order and higher order repetitive behaviors have been documented in the BTBR T+tf/J (BTBR) mouse strain, a mouse model that exhibits all three core behavioral domains that define autism. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of environmental enrichment for reducing repetitive behaviors in BTBR mice. Lower order behaviors were captured by assaying the time and sequence of grooming, while higher order behaviors were measured using pattern analysis of an object exploration task from digital recordings. Baseline scores were established at 7 weeks of age, followed by 30

Chronic Constriction Injury of the Rat's Infraorbital Nerve (IoN-CCI) to Study Trigeminal Neuropathic Pain.

Animal models are important tools to study the pathophysiology and pharmacology of neuropathic pain. This manuscript describes the surgical and behavioral procedures to study trigeminal neuropathic pain in rats. To meet the specificity of trigeminal neuropathic pain syndromes, the infraorbital nerve (IoN) is subjected to a chronic constriction injury (CCI) by loosely ligating the nerve. An intra-orbital approach is presented here to expose and ligate the IoN in the orbital cavity. After IoN ligation, rats exhibit changes in spontaneous behavior and in response to von Frey hair stimulation that
