Perceived barriers and enablers to physical activity participation in people with Alopecia Areata: a constructivist grounded theory study.

BACKGROUND: Alopecia Areata (AA) is an autoimmune disease that is characterised by hair loss. Individuals diagnosed with it often describe feelings of trauma and social rejection due to cosmetic repercussions and are at high risk of experiencing psychological distress. Physical activity (PA) participation has been associated with better mental health outcomes in diverse populations. A preliminary study of individuals with AA indicated that severe hair loss is associated with symptomatic depression, anxiety and stress, which negatively impacted PA participation. While strategies to increase PA

Moving from "I" to "We": A Grounded Theory Analysis of Couple Therapy with Liver Patients and Their Partners.

Prior research indicates that couples who cope with chronic illness from a relational "we" orientation experience more positive outcomes than couples that cope individually; however, little prior research identifies clinical processes that promote reciprocity or how societal gender processes are involved. This grounded theory analysis of 25 videotaped therapy sessions with six heterosexual couples coping with chronic liver disease (LD) used a feminist-informed relational lens to focus on the clinical processes involved in shifting from an individual to a relational orientation. Findings identi

The process of risky sexual behaviors formation in women drug users: a protocol for a grounded theory study.

BACKGROUND: Drug use is an important underlying factor in risky sexual behaviors. Risky sexual behaviors can lead to STIs and HIV/AIDS, especially in women. For better understanding of the relationship between drug use and risky sexual behaviors in women, it is necessary to identify the process of the formation of these behaviors that is a multidimensional process influenced by multiple socio-cultural factors. Therefore, the present study aims to explore the process of risky sexual behaviors formation in women drug users. METHODS: This is a grounded theory qualitative study with Corbin and St

Reconciling disparate data to determine the right answer: A grounded theory of meta analysts' reasoning in meta-analysis.

While the systematic review process is intended to maximize objectivity and limit researchers' biases, examples remain of discordant recommendations from meta-analyses. Current guidelines to explore discrepancies assume the variation is produced by methodological differences and thus focus only on the study process. Because heterogeneity of interpretation also occurs when experts examine the same data, our purpose was to examine if there are reasoning differences, ie, in how information is processed and valued. We created simulated meta-analyses based on idealized randomized studies (ie, perfe

"A Woman Should Still Be a Woman" - A Grounded Theory of the Origins of Sexual Pain and Difficulties with Intercourse.

The origin of women's sexual pain and difficulties with intercourse is still under-researched. The aim of this study was to examine women's constructions of origins. Twenty-eight participants previously diagnosed with vaginismus or dyspareunia were recruited via patient lists and private practices. Interviews had a semi-structured biographic-narrative format; transcripts were analyzed using Grounded Theory. Participants' narratives were constructed based on two major processes: Negotiating Womanhood and Othering the Body. They were integrated in an explanatory model. Identified processes perme

'There's a will, but not a way': Norwegian GPs' experiences of collaboration with child welfare services - a grounded theory study.

BACKGROUND: Adverse childhood experiences can have immediate effects on a child's wellbeing and health and may also result in disorders and illness in adult life. General practitioners are in a good position to identify and support vulnerable children and parents and to collaborate with other agencies such as child welfare services. There is a need for better integration of relevant services. The aim of this study is to explore GPs' experiences of the collaboration process with child welfare services. METHOD: This is a qualitative grounded theory study, with data consisting of ten semi-struct

Cross-professional collaboration between music therapists and special education teachers in autism interventions: a grounded theory qualitative meta-analysis.

This study adopted a grounded theory qualitative meta-analysis approach to examine cross-professional collaboration between music therapists and special education teachers engaged in musical interventions for children with autism spectrum disorders. All reported findings derive from thematic prevalence analysis and theoretical saturation criteria rather than statistical quantification. Through systematic interpretive synthesis of 42 primary qualitative studies published between 2010 and 2024, open coding procedures yielded fifteen core collaboration elements. These elements were organized into

Navigating through turbulence in the nursing talent pipeline: A constructivist grounded theory of academic success in polytechnic nursing education.

BACKGROUND: Academic success for nursing students has traditionally focused on metrics like grade point averages and exam performance but fails to reflect key abilities such as clinical reasoning, ethical decision-making, and the effective transfer of knowledge to practice. Additionally, there is a paucity of literature investigating academic success in undergraduate nursing education within polytechnic institutions, despite their growing role in nursing education. AIM: The objective of this study was to explore the processes and strategies undergraduate nursing students in Canadian polytechn

Between host country and homeland: a grounded theory study on place of dying and death in migrant cancer patients.

BACKGROUND: Migrant cancer patients face unique challenges in end-of-life decision-making. One key yet underexplored aspect is the decision-making process surrounding the place of dying and death. This study explores the factors influencing these decisions involving migrant cancer patients in Italy. METHODS: A constructivist grounded theory approach was employed. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with 28 participants (patients, family members, cultural mediators, and other key informants, some from a previous grounded theory study). Understanding the Needs and Wishes of Older Adults in Interprofessional Treatment for Malnutrition and Sarcopenia: A Grounded Theory Study.

BACKGROUND: Malnutrition and sarcopenia impact the physical health and quality of life of community-dwelling older adults. Managing these conditions requires integrating nutritional and exercise interventions delivered by professionals from diverse backgrounds. Interprofessional collaboration holds promise for providing integrated, person-centered care to older adults. However, to tailor such care, it is essential to understand the needs and wishes of older adults, which remain underexplored. This study aimed to understand the needs and wishes of community-dwelling older adults regarding inter

Strategies to promote treatment compliance: a grounded theory study with relatives of people with a serious mental health condition.

BACKGROUND: Treatment pressures encompass communicative strategies that influence mental healthcare service users' decision-making to increase their compliance with recommended treatment. Persuasion, interpersonal leverage, inducements, and threats have been described as examples of treatment pressures. Research indicates that treatment pressures are exerted not only by mental healthcare professionals but also by relatives. While relatives play a crucial role in their family member's pathway to care, research on the use of treatment pressures by relatives is still scarce. Likewise, little is k

Seeing Through the Façade of Anorexia: A Grounded Theory of Emotional Change Processes Associated With Recovery From Anorexia Nervosa.

OBJECTIVES: Difficulties in managing emotions have been implicated in the development and maintenance of anorexia nervosa (AN), and psychological treatment models seek to address this in putative targets of change. Yet the field of psychotherapy remains unclear and insufficiently evidenced about the process of change and how this is actually achieved, including in what steps and in what order within clinical treatment. This qualitative study sought to develop theory about the process of emotional change during recovery from anorexia. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were carried out with n

The Process to Caregiver Expertise: A Constructivist Grounded Theory Study of Parents of Infants With Critical Congenital Heart Disease.

BACKGROUND: Caregivers of hospitalized infants with critical congenital heart disease (CCHD) experience stress, emotions and contextual challenges with staff and unit culture during their infant's stay in critical care units, especially if the stay is lengthy. These compounding adverse conditions impact a caregiver's ability to learn to care for their infant. The purpose of this constructivist grounded theory study was to construct an explanatory theory, based on the analysis of the caregivers' perspectives, uncovering the process caregivers of hospitalized infants go through to become experts

Controlling Symptoms versus Minimizing Negative Treatment Impact: A Grounded Theory Study of Heterogeneity in Patient Preferences for Psoriasis Treatments.

PURPOSE: Patients vary in preferences for health outcomes, risks, and treatments. However, heterogeneity in patient preferences is not typically considered in health technology assessment (HTA) decision-making. Using plaque psoriasis as a case study, we aimed to provide an in-depth understanding of how preferences are shaped and explore real-world preference heterogeneity subgroups for psoriasis treatments. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In this grounded theory study, 38 Canadians with moderate-to-severe psoriasis engaged in one-to-one, semi-structured interviews between October 2023 and December 2024

Navigating Cancer Risk: A Grounded Theory of Culturally Anchored Risk Engagement (CARE) Behavior Among Sub-Saharan African Immigrant Men.

BACKGROUND: This grounded theory study explores the cultural beliefs and perceptions that shape cancer-related health behaviors among Sub-Saharan African immigrant (SSAI) men in the United States. Despite growing awareness of poor health outcomes affecting immigrant communities, there remains a significant gap in understanding the cultural drivers that influence engagement with preventive care and early cancer detection among SSAI men. METHODS: Guided by grounded theory, 36 SSAI men participated in in-depth interviews. Purposeful sampling was used to recruit eligible immigrants from SSAI men
