The pineal gland in relation to growth and development in children.

The biorhythm of melatonin in human newborns is established later than that of either serotonin or N-acetylserotonin. Towards the end of the first year of life, the melatonin rhythm is a well established phenomenon and its nocturnal increment is equal to that seen in the pre-school children. Following this period the magnitude of nighttime melatonin increment starts declining and is closely associated with advancing skeletal age. This association between the magnitude of nocturnal increment and skeletal age is also noted in pathological subjects, lower skeletal age with greater magnitude of in

Development, growth and eruption of permanent incisor teeth in Romney sheep.

The development of permanent incisor teeth of sheep was followed from the age of six weeks to 116 weeks. The teeth were observed through the bud, cap and bell stages, and the development of enamel and dentine. At the same time that amelogenesis started, the papillary layer developed from the intermediate layer and the outer dental epithelium began to form the cell rests of Malassez. The ameloblasts went through secretory, transitional and maturational phases, and in due course disappeared, after which cementum was laid down over the enamel surface. Initially the connective tissue of the follic

The effect of chronic childhood malnutrition on pubertal growth and development.

Pubertal growth and development were compared in 342 privileged, urban children and 347 impoverished rural adolescents from Kenya. Measurements of height, weight, upper arm circumference, and triceps skinfolds revealed marked differences between the two study groups just before the onset of sexual maturation. These differences were also found in the early stages of puberty but notable catch-up was evident throughout the later period of the maturational process. Early stages of sexual maturity were delayed by 3 yr in malnourished boys with a 2.1-yr lag in the age of onset of menarche in rural g

[Various aspects of the influence of infection on growth and development].

It is pointed out how infections can delay growth and development through an aggressive and long-standing action, through direct action of an infecting agent (virus, bacteria, parasites). or through sequelae in main organs (brain, kidney, growth cartilage, muscular system, etc.). how infections impair nutrients' absortion, metabolism and excretion. The role of the leukocytes is evidenced in the liberation of two factors: MEL and pyrogen factor. Metabolic responses are classified in an anabolic anda catabolic phase. The second mechanism that interfers on growth and development is a specific act

Temporal impact of hypothyroidism on porcine fetal growth and skeletal development.

In the fetal pig, circulating thyroid hormone and growth rate increase throughout gestation; however, the functional association between these coincident factors has not been established. We used a nonpathogenic model of induced fetal hypothyroidism, wherein pregnant gilts were treated with methimazole (MMI) for 21 days, starting on gestation days (GD) 34, 45, 55, or 65. The resulting fetal populations were deeply phenotyped, including body and organ weights, cranial and whole body morphometrics, radiography, and dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) of the fore- and hindlimbs. MMI increased

Lifecourse Growth and Development Determinants of Mammographic Density in Black Women.

BACKGROUND: High mammographic density is one of the strongest breast cancer risk factors; however, determinants of high mammographic density are understudied in Black women. We assessed growth and development factors across the lifecourse in relation to mammographic density. METHODS: Within the Black Women's Health Study, we used Cumulus software to assess percent mammographic density from digital screening mammograms for 5,905 women ages 40 to 74 years. We fit linear regression models to quantify the association of lifecourse characteristics including birthweight, childhood somatotype, age a

Multi-scaling allometry in human development, mammalian morphology, and tree growth.

Various animal and plant species exhibit allometric relationships among their respective traits, wherein one trait undergoes expansion as a power-law function of another due to constraints acting on growth processes. For instance, the acknowledged consensus posits that tree height scales with the two-thirds power of stem diameter. In the context of human development, it is posited that body weight scales with the second power of height. This prevalent allometric relationship derives its nomenclature from fitting two variables linearly within a logarithmic framework, thus giving rise to the ter

Gene regulatory roles of growth and differentiation factors in retinal development.

Retinal ganglion cell (RGC) differentiation is tightly controlled by extrinsic and intrinsic factors. Growth and differentiation factor 15 (GDF-15) promotes RGC differentiation, opposite to GDF-11 which inhibits RGC differentiation, both in the mouse retina and in human stem cells. To deepen our understanding of how these two closely related molecules confer opposing effects on retinal development, here we assess the transcriptional profiles of mouse retinal progenitors exposed to exogenous GDF-11 or -15. We find a dichotomous effect of GDF-15 on RGC differentiation, decreasing RGCs expressing

Genetically modified mouse models to investigate thyroid development, function and growth.

The thyroid gland produces thyroid hormones (TH), which are essential regulators for growth, development and metabolism. The thyroid is mainly controlled by the thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) that binds to its receptor (TSHR) on thyrocytes and mediates its action via different G protein-mediated signaling pathways. TSH primarily activates the Gs-pathway, and at higher concentrations also the Gq/11-pathway, leading to an increase of intracellular cAMP and Ca2+, respectively. To date, the physiological importance of other G protein-mediated signaling pathways in thyrocytes is unclear. Congeni

Intrauterine growth restriction: impact on cardiovascular development and function throughout infancy.

Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) refers to the situation where a fetus does not grow according to its genetic growth potential. One of the main causes of IUGR is uteroplacental vascular insufficiency. Under these circumstances of chronic oxygen and nutrient deprivation, the growth-restricted fetus often displays typical circulatory changes, which in part represent adaptations to the suboptimal intrauterine environment. These fetal adaptations aim to preserve oxygen and nutrient supply to vital organs such as the brain, the heart, and the adrenals. These prenatal circulatory adaptations a

Development and Growth of the Normal Cranial Vault : An Embryologic Review.

Understanding the development of a skull deformity requires an understanding of the normal morphogenesis of the cranium. Craniosynostosis is the premature, pathologic ossification of one or more cranial sutures leading to skull deformities. A review of the English medical literature using textbooks and standard search engines was performed to gather information about the prenatal development and growth of the cranial vault of the neurocranium. A process of morphogenic sequencing begins during prenatal development and growth, continues postnatally, and contributes to the basis for the different

Fertility treatment: long-term growth and mental development of the children.

Fertility treatment has been associated with obstetrical and perinatal complications. It is, however, uncertain whether fertility treatment or parental subfertility is associated with long-term development of the children. We aimed to assess the growth and mental health of children and adolescents conceived after fertility treatment compared to spontaneously conceived controls. First, we evaluated all previous studies comparing neurodevelopmental outcomes between children conceived after fertility treatment and spontaneous conceived controls. The systematic review clarified methodological limi

Prenatal head growth and child neuropsychological development at age 14 months.

OBJECTIVE: We sought to assess the association between prenatal head growth and child neuropsychological development in the general population. STUDY DESIGN: We evaluated 2104 children at the age of 14 months from a population-based birth cohort in Spain. Head circumference (HC) was measured by ultrasound examinations at weeks 12, 20, and 34 of gestation and by a nurse at birth. Head growth was assessed using conditional SD scores between weeks 12-20 and 20-34. Trained psychologists assessed neuropsychological functioning using the Bayley Scales of Infant Development. Growth and development in thanatophoric dysplasia - an update 25 years later.

Thanatophoric dysplasia is typically a neonatal lethal condition. However, for those rare individuals who do survive, there is the development of seizures, progression of craniocervical stenosis, ventilator dependence, and limitations in motor and cognitive abilities. Families must be made aware of these issues during the discussion of management plans.

Extrauterine listeriosis in the gravid mouse influences embryonic growth and development.

Gravid mice and other rodents inoculated with Listeria monocytogenes typically fail to clear an intrauterine infection and either succumb or expel their intrauterine contents. We took advantage of this property to investigate the effects of an extrauterine infection on parameters of pregnancy success. Pregnant mice were selected for our study if they showed no clinical signs of listeriosis following oral inoculation at 7.5 gestational days (gd), and had no detectable intrauterine colony forming units (cfu) at near term (18.5 gd). The range of oral doses employed was 10⁶-10⁸ cfu per mouse for t
