We report a new syndrome that we call "recurrent optic neuromyelitis with endocrinopathies" in eight Antillean women from Martinique and Guadeloupe Ocular involvement was either monocular or binocular, whereas myelopathy was acute or subacute. In seven patients, myelopathic symptoms recurred, and in six patients, visual problems recurred. Spinal cord involvement was a consistent band-like pseudo-syringomyelic dissociated sensory loss. All eight patients had endocrinopathies consisting of amenorrhea, galactorrhea, diabetes insipidus, hypothyroidism, or hyperphagia. Spinal cord MRI revealed cavi

This study outlines an experimental method for landfill volatile organic compounds (VOCs) characterization by means of a portable time-of-flight mass spectrometer in an insular tropical environment. The concentrations of six VOCs, three aromatic and three chlorinated compounds, frequently identified in landfill gas plume were determined in the main municipal solid waste of Guadeloupe archipelago and its surrounding areas (in the Leeward Islands). Measurements were carried out for various stages of waste degradation. Without mechanical forcing on the waste piles, the results for aromatic and ch

Tabernaemontana citrifolia (Apocynaceae) is traditionally used as an anthelmintic preparation for ruminants in Guadeloupe (French West Indies). This study was carried out to evaluate the in vitro effect of this plant against the parasitic nematode of small ruminants Haemonchus contortus. Three extracts (aqueous, methanolic and dichloromethane) of T. citrifolia fruit, leaf and root were tested on four developmental stages of the parasite, using egg hatch assay (EHA), larval development assay (LDA), L3 migration inhibition assay (LMI), and adult worm motility assay (AWM). Compared to the negativ

This paper reviews the most important aspects of carrier detection procedures, genetic counselling, population screening and prenatal diagnosis of the thalassaemias and sickle cell anaemia. Carrier detection can be made retrospectively, following the birth of an affected child, or prospectively. Carrier detection and genetic counselling in at-risk populations for alpha-thalassaemia and sickle cell anaemia is carried out mostly retrospectively. However prospective carrier screening is ongoing in Cuba and Guadeloupe for sickle cell anaemia and, in a very limited way, in some South East Asian pop

Influxes of sargassos are responsible for economic and environmental disasters in areas where they bloom, especially in regions whose main income relies on tourism and with limited capacity for sanitation and public health response. A promising way of valorization would be to convert this incredible biomass into tools to fight the deadly vector mosquito Aedes aegypti. In the present study, we generated hydrolates and aqueous extracts from three main Sargassum morphotypes identified in Guadeloupe (French West Indies): Sargassum natans VIII, Sargassum natans I and Sargassum fluitans. We conducte

Ogilvie´s syndrome is an acute colonic pseudo-obstruction, characterized by massive colonic distension in the absence of mechanical cause. It is a very rare pathology after spinal surgery. We report two cases in the neurosurgery department of the University Hospital of Guadeloupe. A 79-year-old woman overweight (BMI= 27kg/m2) and a 56-year-old man experienced history of non-systematized bilateral lumbar and sciatic pain with reduction in walking perimeter for few months. MRI of lumbar spine had revealed a lumbar stenosis with disc herniation. They had undergone decompression surgery with lamin

Schistosomiasis, a neglected global pandemic, may be curtailed by blocking transmission of the parasite via its intermediate hosts, aquatic snails. Elucidating the genetic basis of snail-schistosome interaction is a key to this strategy. Here we map a natural parasite-resistance polymorphism from a Caribbean population of the snail Biomphalaria glabrata. In independent experimental evolution lines, RAD genotyping shows that the same genomic region responds to selection for resistance to the parasite Schistosoma mansoni. A dominant allele in this region conveys an 8-fold decrease in the odds of

Of the 6,060 consecutive live births delivered at the University Maternity Unit of Guadeloupe (French West Indies) during a 30-month period, 635 newborns (10.4%) presented with meconium stained (MS) amniotic fluid, of which 595 (94%) received bacteriological screening at birth (light MS, n = 543; thick MS, n = 52). Thirty (5%) of MS newborns had a bacteraemia (n = 13, group B streptococcus, GBS), and 128 (21.5%) a bacterial positive gastric aspirate (n = 54, GBS). Sixty-six newborns among MS babies needed tracheal suctioning (11%) in the delivery room for meconium inhalation. Among these 595 s

BACKGROUND: Myoma is the most common benign tumor in women of childbearing age, with a high frequency in Afro-Caribbean than in other women. Depending on their number, size and location, myomas are suspected to be a cause of infertility. Conservative treatment by myomectomy is possible for symptomatic patients wishing to preserve their fertility.
PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the fertility of patients undergoing myomectomy in the University Hospital of Pointe-à-Pitre, Guadeloupe.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study including all patients under age 42 who had conserva

BACKGROUND: The (re-)emergence of arboviruses in the Caribbean, and worldwide, is a major public health issue of concern to all scientific research stakeholders. This study aimed to use bibliometric analysis to identify the contribution of Caribbean countries to scientific production regarding the three arboviruses with the greatest impact, namely zika, chikungunya and dengue.
METHOD: Bibliographic data related to arbovirus diseases were collected from three international databases (Web of Science, Pubmed, and Scopus), filtered by Caribbean islands of affiliation. VosViewer was used to identi

The most important ticks transmitting diseases to ruminants in the Caribbean islands are: Amblyomma variegatum, vector of cowdriosis and associated with acute dermatophilosis; Amblyomma cajennense, potential vector of cowdriosis; Boophilus microplus, vector of babesiosis and anaplasmosis. At the present time, Amblyomma variegatum is widespread in the Lesser Antilles from Barbados to Puerto Rico. The intensity of the tick control program varies in the different islands and the tick infestation in each island ranges from limited foci to widespread infestations. The vector situation appeared stab

OBJECTIVE: To describe cause-specific mortality patterns of banana plantation workers in the French West Indies.
METHODS: The study included 11 221 farmers and farm workers who had work in banana cultivation in the French West Indies (Guadeloupe or Martinique) between 1973 and 1993, followed up from January 1981 to December 2017. We calculated standardised mortality ratios (SMRs), causal mortality ratios (CMRs) and relative standardised mortality ratios (rSMRs) using regional reference rates.
RESULTS: SMR analyses showed mortality deficits in the overall mortality and for almost all causes o

Ticks transmit a wide variety of pathogens including bacteria, parasites and viruses. Over the last decade, numerous novel viruses have been described in arthropods, including ticks, and their characterization has provided new insights into RNA virus diversity and evolution. However, little is known about their ability to infect vertebrates. As very few studies have described the diversity of viruses present in ticks from the Caribbean, we implemented an RNA-sequencing approach on Amblyomma variegatum and Rhipicephalus microplus ticks collected from cattle in Guadeloupe and Martinique. Among t

Freshwater snails are obligate intermediate hosts for numerous parasitic trematodes, most notably schistosomes. Schistosomiasis is a devastating human and veterinary illness, which is primarily controlled by limiting the transmission of these parasites from their intermediate snail hosts. Understanding how this transmission occurs, as well as the basic immunobiology of these snails may be important for controlling this disease in the future. Allelic variation in the Guadeloupe resistance complex (GRC) of Biomphalaria glabrata partially determines their susceptibility to parasitic infection, an

Coxsackievirus A24 variant is, together with enterovirus 70 and adenoviruses, the major etiological agent involved in acute hemorrhagic conjunctivitis outbreaks worldwide. However, the standard virus isolation method followed by serotyping or VP1 region sequencing is time-consuming. A rapid method for the detection of coxsackievirus A24 variant from conjunctival swab specimens would be useful in the context of explosive and extensive outbreaks. A one-step real-time RT-PCR assay based on TaqMan technology was thus developed and assessed on 36 conjunctival swabs from outbreaks of conjunctivitis

BACKGROUND: Dengue infection is caused by an arbovirus with a wide range of presentations, varying from asymptomatic disease to unspecific febrile illness and haemorrhagic syndrome with shock, which can evolve to death. In Brazil, the virus circulates since the 1980s with many introductions of new serotypes, genotypes, and lineages since then. Here we report a fatal case of dengue associated with a Dengue virus (DENV) lineage not detected in the country until now.
CASE PRESENTATION: The patient, a 58-year-old man arrived at the hospital complaining of fever and severe abdominal pain due to in

BACKGROUND: Dengue is a major emerging public health concern in tropical and subtropical countries. Severe dengue can lead to hospitalisation and death. This study was performed to assess the economic burden of hospitalisations for dengue from 2007 to 2011 in three French territories of the Americas where dengue is endemic (French Guiana, Martinique and Guadeloupe).
METHODS: Data on dengue-associated hospitalisations were extracted from the French national hospital administrative database, Programme de Médicalisation des Systèmes d'Information (PMSI). The numbers of stays and the correspondin

A dominant paradigm in neurological disease research is that the primary etiological factors for diseases such as Alzheimer's (AD), Parkinson's (PD), and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) are genetic. Opposed to this perspective are the clear observations from epidemiology that purely genetic casual factors account for a relatively small fraction of all cases. Many who support a genetic etiology for neurological disease take the view that while the percentages may be relatively small, these numbers will rise in the future with the inevitable discoveries of additional genetic mutations. The f
