Entomological studies at an enzootic Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus focus in Guatemala, 1977-1980.

The ecology of several potential mosquito vectors of Venezuelan equine encephalitis (VEE) alphavirus was studied in an enzootic focus of that virus on the Pacific coast of Guatemala over a four-year period. Four species-Culex taeniopus, Mansonia titillans, Culex nigripalpus and Aedes taeniorhynchus-were most prevalent during the wet season when transmission normally occurs. However, only Cx. taeniopus yielded VEE virus. The bloodfeeding patterns of these species revealed that Ae. taeniorhynchus and Ma. titillans fed almost exclusively on bovine and equine hosts. Conversely, Cx. nigripalpus was

Serologic studies on onchocerciasis in Guatemala using fixed-tissue sections of adult Onchocerca volvulus.

Sera from 458 residents of a coffee plantation in an area of Guatemala endemic for onchocerciasis were examined for the presence of antibodies to Onchocerca volvulus using a fluorescent antibody (IFA) test with sections of adult worms as the antigen. Antibody response increased with age of the residents and microfilarial density. A total of 70.0% of the residents were serologically positive and 65.1% were positive for microfilariae. Males had higher microfilarial densities and higher IFA responses. Sixty-three individuals were positive for microfilariae and IFA-negative indicating a lack of se

May Measurement Month 2017-2019: an analysis of blood pressure screening results from Guatemala.

In 2018, the Ministry of Public Health and Social Assistance of Guatemala published the last update of the prevalence of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), and as in other low-income countries, the prevalence of NCD morbidity and mortality had risen. The prevalence of hypertension in Guatemala has been reported in a range from 18.7 to 22.7% which could be underestimated, because the country does not have an adequate statistical surveillance system. May Measurement Month (MMM) 2017, 2018, and 2019 in Guatemala was an opportunistic survey, which followed the methodology previously published. Blood

Cutaneous leishmaniasis control in Alta Verapaz (northern Guatemala): evaluating current efforts through stakeholders' experiences.

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL), endemic in Guatemala, mostly affects poor people living in the northern region. A national control program that includes surveillance, diagnose, and treatment offered free of cost by the Ministry of Health (MoH) has been in place since 2003. However, the incidence is increasing and treatment rates are not optimal, suggesting that current efforts are not being effective. This study aimed to understand barriers and facilitators of CL control in Guatemala as experienced and perceived by key stakeholders in order to comprehend what works well and does not

Energy-related influences on variation in breastfeeding duration among indigenous Maya women from Guatemala.

OBJECTIVES: The causes of variation in breastfeeding duration in humans are poorly understood, but life history factors related to maternal energetics drive much of the variation in lactation duration in nonhuman animals. With this in mind, we investigated whether four energy-related factors influence variation in breastfeeding duration in a non-industrial human population: (1) mortality risk during mother's development (assessed via mother's adult height), (2) reliance on nutrient-dense weaning foods, (3) access to and need for help with infant feeding and care ("allomaternal care"), and (4)

Lethal damage to Simulium metallicum following high intakes of Onchocerca volvulus microfilariae in Guatemala.

High intakes of microfilariae of a Guatemalan strain of Onchocerca volvulus by Simulium metallicum proved lethal to a considerable proportion of the flies within 24 hours of taking an infecting blood-meal. The gross histopathological changes resulting from infection were compared in groups of moribund and of apparently healthy flies during this period. The marked morbidity of the flies could be related to certain events occurring in the alimentary tract and haemocoele of the fly soon after ingestion of the parasitized blood. The rapid death of the flies may be ascribed to one or more of the fo

Clinical and Epidemiological Characteristics of Adult Patients With Primary Brain Tumors in Guatemala: A Retrospective Study.

INTRODUCTION: Brain tumors cause high morbidity and mortality and decrease patients' quality of life and autonomy. While their clinical and epidemiological characteristics have been described worldwide, data are scarce in resource-limited areas, where diagnosis and treatment are often difficult. PURPOSE: This study aimed to characterize the clinical and epidemiological profile of patients with primary brain tumors aged 20-65 years admitted to the Neurosurgery Department of the Regional Hospital of the West (Guatemala) between January 2018 and January 2022, and, as exploratory secondary aims,

Implementing a Community-Centered Approach to Gestational Diabetes Screening in Rural Guatemala: A Process Report.

Introduction: Gestational diabetes (GD) screening remains limited in many low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) due to resource constraints, limited training, and low community awareness. Although community-centered approaches may improve access to screening in rural and Indigenous settings, the implementation processes through which such approaches are designed and operationalized are rarely documented. Methods: This study presents a community-based implementation process report describing the development, adaptation, and early implementation of a GD screening program in rural Guatemala, g

Evaluation of Educational Activity About Preeclampsia With Traditional Midwives in the Remote Petén Department of Guatemala.

INTRODUCTION: The Guatemalan Ministry of Health has offered traditional midwives (TMs) training programs in Spanish since 1955. Many Guatemalan TMs speak indigenous dialects, with limited reading and writing skills, and may not fully comprehend this information. Additionally, TMs have previously requested instruction on how to measure blood pressure in order to improve outcomes for women developing preeclampsia. Prompt diagnosis of preeclampsia would enable TMs to make more timely decisions for transport to a hospital. The purpose of this quality improvement project therefore was to develop cu

Epidemiological, clinical and etiological treatment aspects in the Chagas clinic of the municipality of Comapa - Jutiapa, Guatemala.

Chagas disease (CD) is a major public health problem in Guatemala, where an estimated 166,000 people are infected with Trypanosoma cruzi and 1.4 million are at risk of infection. The municipality of Comapa (department of Jutiapa) is in a "hot spot" for CD control in Central America. To improve access to CD healthcare, the Departmental Directorate of Integrated Health Services Networks of Jutiapa, with support from the Drugs for Neglected Diseases initiative Latin America, set up a Chagas clinic in Comapa; This study describes epidemiological and clinical aspects of the population attended in t

Prevalence of submicroscopic congenital malaria and associated risk factors in an area of low endemicity of Guatemala.

BACKGROUND: Malaria during pregnancy can have severe consequences, such as abortion, intrauterine growth restriction, low birth weight, maternal and fetal anaemia, congenital malaria and fetal death. Submicroscopic congenital malaria is traditionally defined as a Plasmodium infection detected only by molecular methods in the umbilical cord blood and/or in the newborn peripheral blood. Data on the prevalence and risk factors associated with submicroscopic malaria in pregnant women from Latin America are scarce. This study aimed to describe the first submicroscopic infection rate by Plasmodium s

Diagnosis of fungal opportunistic infections in people living with HIV from Guatemala and El Salvador.

OBJECTIVES: Histoplasmosis and cryptococcosis are important public health problems in people living with HIV (PLHIV) in Central America. Conventional laboratory tests, such as culture and microscopy, are not optimal; however, antigen (Ag) tests are rapid, highly sensitive, and specific for diagnosis of fungal opportunistic infections (OI). The aim of this study was to describe the results of a laboratory-based surveillance system for histoplasmosis and cryptococcosis. METHODS: An observational cross-sectional study based on laboratory surveillance, was carried out in two hospitals in Guatemal

HPV self-sampling acceptability in rural and indigenous communities in Guatemala: a cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: Cervical cancer disproportionately burdens low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs) such as Guatemala. Self-collection testing for human papillomavirus (HPV) has been suggested as a form of cervical cancer screening to facilitate access in LMICs. This study assessed and compared the acceptability of self-collection HPV testing in two rural, indigenous and ethnically distinct communities in Guatemala: Santiago Atitlán, Sololá and Livingston, Izabal. METHODS: All participants, women between the ages of 18 and 60, completed a questionnaire. Eligible participants were also ask

Vaccine Demand and Willingness-to-pay for Arbovirus Vaccines: A Cross-sectional Survey in Rural Guatemala.

BACKGROUND: Arboviruses including dengue (DENV), chikungunya (CHIKV) and Zika cause significant morbidity in Latin America. With multiple arbovirus vaccines in development, better understanding of community attitudes and acceptability for these vaccines is needed. METHODS: In September 2016, a cross-sectional survey assessed arbovirus knowledge, attitudes, vaccine demand and willingness-to-pay (WTP) at the conclusion of a DENV/norovirus surveillance study in rural Guatemala with high arbovirus endemicity. Factors associated with vaccine demand and WTP were assessed with regression analysis.
