Undescended testis is one of the most common congenital defects in the newborn boys and the common cause of cryptorchidism. If left untreated, this condition is strongly associated with infertility and drastically increased risk of testicular cancer in adulthood. Testis position in developing males is defined by sexual dimorphic differentiation of two gonadal ligaments, gubernaculum and cranial suspensory ligament. Recent transgenic mouse studies identified testicular hormone insulin-like 3 (INSL3), and its receptor, GREAT/LGR8, as the critical regulators of the gubernacular differentiation. M

An accessory and cavitated uterine mass (ACUM) is a rare anomaly with an embryological origin of dysfunctionning female gubernaculum. It is an accessory mass internally lined with normal endometrium, separated from the uterine cavity and located near the insertion of the round ligament. ACUM's clinical manifestations are severe dysmenorrhea and/or chronic pelvic pain. It is a relatively unknown condition, which makes its diagnosis complicated and suggests a large differential diagnosis. We report the case of a 31-year-old female presenting with pelvic chronic pain and crippling dysmenorrhea. T

Cryptorchidism is one of the most common congenital anomalies and affects 2-4% of full-term new born boys. Its aetiology is poorly understood at present. HOXA10 plays a pivotal role in regulation of testicular descent. Male mice mutant for Hoxa10 exhibit unilateral or bilateral cryptorchidism as a result of impaired development of the gubernaculums. In this study, we performed mutation analysis of HOXA10 gene in a cohort of 98 cryptorchid patients. And we found a mutation (N27K) in a boy with unilateral cryptorchidism. The mutation was not detected in 106 healthy controls. Both in silico analy

Steinernema longicaudum Shen & Wang is redescribed based on a comparative morphological study of specimens from the type isolate from China, and two other isolates recovered from Korea and the USA. For the first and second generation female, the location of the vulva, shape of the vulval lips, and shape and length of the tail were newly observed diagnostic characters. A more detailed description of the morphology of the male spicules and gubernaculum, and the arrangement of the genital papillae is included. A description, based on scanning electron microscopy observations, of the lateral field

A new nematode species of the family Cylindrocorporidae and the genus Myctolaimellus from subcortical cavities made by the locust borer (Megacyllene robiniae Forster) in black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia L.) is described. Males of the new species have a length of 700 to 1,050 microm; a bursate tail, peloderan with nine pairs of rays; and knobbed, curved spicules with tips bending gently into a hook. The distinctive gubernaculum is half the length of the spicules, deeply grooved longitudinally along both its dorsal and ventral surfaces, and has a spoon-shaped end. Females have a length of 830

Two new species of the family Microlaimidae Micoletzky, 1922 are described and illustrated from the Black Sea. Aponema pontica sp. n. is morphologically closest to A. torosum in the shape of the body and spicules, size of amphids, but differs in having small and triangular cardia, absence of constriction in head region, shape of gubernaculum apophyses, rounded and weakly sclerotised lumen of pharyngeal bulb and longer spicules. Microlaimus paraglobiceps sp. n. morphologically resembles M. globiceps de Man, 1880 in the shape of the body, structure of the male sexual organs and presence of precl

Male sexual differentiation relies upon testicular secretion of the hormones testosterone, Mullerian inhibiting substance, and insulin-3 (Insl3). Insl3 is responsible for testicular descent through virilization and outgrowth of the embryonic gubernaculum. In mouse, prenatal exposure to 17beta-estradiol and the nonsteroidal synthetic estrogen diethylstilbestrol (DES) disturbs the endocrine balance, causing demasculinizing and feminizing effects in the male embryo, including impaired testicular descent (cryptorchidism). In the current study, we show that maternal exposure to estrogens, including

The processus vaginalis (PV) forms as a peritoneal diverticulum within the gubernaculum testis to allow the testis to exit from the abdominal cavity. Failure of its closure leads to inguinal hernias and hydroceles. Ascending testis, which is likely to be an acquired form of undescended testis, may also be part of the spectrum of failure of regression of the PV. At orchidopexy for cryptorchidism in older boys with a history of a scrotal testis in infancy, we find that the PV persists as a fibrous string, preventing normal elongation of the vas deferens and gonadal vessels with increasing size o

Some investigators have suggested that testicular descent relative to the ovary is actually caused by the relative upward growth of the structures adjacent to the testis and that in the early phase of descent the testis is anchored to the inguinal region as the embryo enlarges. This concept was founded on results from the dissection of human fetuses. In this study the development of the urogenital system in fetal mice is examined using scanning electron microscopy to determine the distance between the bladder neck and the lower pole of the gonad. The results of this study confirm that transabd

A description is given of the role of the gubernaculum testis in the migration of the testis from the intra-abdominal to the scrotal position. The morphological differences in the process between carnivores, ungulates and man on the one hand and rodents on the other are stressed. The importance of gubernacular outgrowth, gubernacular regression as well as the importance of intra-abdominal pressure is emphasized. The effects of some forms of abnormal gubernacular development on testicular descent are described. The hormonal factors possibly involved in the regulation of the gubernacular reactio

One new species of Parasphaerolaimus is described from a Brazilian estuarine system with intra-uterine development of its offspring. Parasphaerolaimus magdolnae sp. n. is distinguished from other species of the genus by the presence of only one anterior testis, spicules morphology and size and a gubernaculum without dorsal apophysis. The cuticle of the new species is striated and the position of the vulva is far posterior on the body, almost reaching the anus. The taxonomy of Parasphaerolaimus was also re-examined and two other species were transferred from Sphaerolaimus to Parasphaerolaimus a

A new nematode species, Philometra barnesi sp. n. (Philometridae), is described from the ovary of the marine teleost Pomadasys argenteus (Fosskål) (Haemulidae) off the northern coast of Australia (near Darwin). The new species is characterized by short subequal spicules (84 and 87 μm long), a gubernaculum without a dorsal protuberance at its distal tip, the structure of male anterior and posterior body ends, the body lengths of males (1.67 mm) and gravid females (320-597 mm) and the structure of the oesophagus and caudal end of gravid females. Philometra barnesi is the sixth nominal gonad-infe

The matrix metalloproteinases are enzymes capable of remodeling of extracellular matrix, and modulate the behavior of cells. Maturation of gubernaculum and spermatogenesis demand proper equilibrium of metalloproteinases and their inhibitors. The aim of this survey was to investigate the levels of matrix metalloproteinase type 1 (MMP-1) and matrix metalloproteinase type 2 (MMP-2) in the plasma of children with unilateral cryptorchidism along with levels of Insulin-like Peptide 3 (INSL3) and inhibin B. INSL3 have a role in gubernaculum development. Inhibin B is produced by Sertoli cells, and its

Adenomatoid odontogenic tumour (AOT) is a benign tumour that arises from odontogenic epithelial remnants. AOTs usually present as innocuous lesions with limited growth potential. Multiple AOTs are frequently reported in the literature, with reports of tumours associated with up to seven impacted teeth. Multiple AOTs have also been described in association with Schimmelpenning syndrome. This case report highlights the rare occurrence of multiple AOTs involving eight impacted teeth in a 9-year-old male patient. Radiographic examination showed features of enamel hypoplasia and multiple prominent

Sexual differentiation starts with the development of bipotential gonads that further differentiate into testes or ovaries. The fetal testis secretes hormones that guide the differentiation of internal and external sex organs, whereas the fetal ovary remains rather inactive hormonally. Defects in gonadal differentiation or hormone secretion and action result in disorders of sex development (DSD). Testicular descent is a continuum that has often been described to occur in two main phases: the transabdominal phase and the inguinoscrotal phase. The first phase is according to animal studies depen

Meconium periorchitis is an uncommon but well-documented phenomenon by which intra-abdominal meconium reaches the scrotum via a patent processus vaginalis. This classically presents in a child first as a soft hydrocele, and later as a firm scrotal mass once calcification of the meconium occurs. We report a case of a 6-month-old boy with exam findings suspicious for perinatal testicular torsion who was taken for surgical exploration and found to have a meconium fecalith located inferior to the testicle and outside of the tunica vaginalis within the gubernaculum. The fecalith was excised and orc

The investigation of a male with impalpable testes is one of the most frequent diagnostic indications of laparoscopy and it is accepted as a therapeutic tool for the treatment of the intra-abdominal testis. We have studied thirteen patients being surgically operated by a video-assisted orchidopexy without spermatic vessels section. The technique consists of wide mobilization of the spermatic vessels and the vas deferens from the posterior peritoneum, sectioning the gubernaculum and descending of the testis to the scrotum. In all the cases, the internal groin ring was later closed by means of a

The ideal age for treatment is still controversial. However, all recent histological studies show that the number of spermatogonia and the diameter of the tubules remain virtually normal until the beginning of the third year of life. Treatment therefore should take place in the second year, after all chances of spontaneous migration have vanished and before lesions due to cryptorchidism develop. Chorionic gonadotropic hormones should be used systematically; they avoid surgery in only one out of five cases, but they make it possible to test the possibilities of testicular descent and testostero

Descent of testes from a position near the kidneys into the lower abdomen or into the scrotum is an important developmental process that occurs in all placental mammals, with the exception of five afrotherian lineages. Since soft-tissue structures like testes are not preserved in the fossil record and since key parts of the placental mammal phylogeny remain controversial, it has been debated whether testicular descent is the ancestral or derived condition in placental mammals. To resolve this debate, we used genomic data of 71 mammalian species and analyzed the evolution of two key genes (rela
