Exploring the role of parental guilt in the association between parental self-efficacy and adjustment disorder among parents of children diagnosed with cancer.

The diagnosis of childhood cancer poses a profound psychological crisis for parents, compelling them to reevaluate and adapt their parental roles under extreme uncertainty. Guided by transactional stress theory, this study explored parental guilt as a mediator between parental self-efficacy and adjustment disorder among parents of children with cancer. A sample of 218 Israeli parents of children with cancer completed self-report questionnaires. Parental guilt was found to fully mediate the association between parental self-efficacy and adjustment disorder, such that higher levels of parental s

Neuroticism and Religiosity: The Role of Obsessive Beliefs, Thought-Control Strategies and Guilt in Scrupulosity and Obsessive-Compulsive Symptoms Among Muslim Undergraduates.

Neuroticism and religiosity are distal vulnerability factors for OCD phenomenon. The present study aimed to examine the roles of obsessive beliefs (OBs), thought-control strategies, and guilt in the relationship between these vulnerability factors and obsessive-compulsive symptoms (OCSs), specifically scrupulosity symptoms in a Muslim sample via SEM. The sample consisted of 273 university students who filled out a set of questionnaires. The results indicated that neuroticism and the degree of religiosity predict OBs that are positively associated with guilt and self-punishment both of which pr

Shame, Guilt, and Suicide Ideation among Bondage and Discipline, Dominance and Submission, and Sadomasochism Practitioners: Examining the Role of the Interpersonal Theory of Suicide.

To date, no study has examined rates of suicide ideation or theory-based risk factors for suicide ideation among bondage and discipline, dominance and submission, and sadomasochism (BDSM) practitioners. Participants were 321 adults that endorsed BDSM involvement. Thirty-seven percent of the sample indicated a nonzero level of suicide ideation. Thwarted belongingness and perceived burdensomeness (PB) were positively associated with suicide ideation and their interactive effect predicted additional variance in suicide ideation after adjusting for depressive symptoms. Overall, shame and guilt wer

Guilt Proneness and Shame Proneness Differentially Relate to Sex Disparity in Depression Among Adolescents in China: A Longitudinal Serial Mediation Analysis.

While sex disparities in adolescent depression are well-documented, how distinct self-conscious emotions divergently impact this gap remains incompletely understood. Using a three-wave longitudinal design, Chinese adolescents (N = 2,915; Mage = 16.99, SD = 1.33; 40.07% female) completed measures of shame, guilt, maladaptive cognitive emotion regulation, and depression over 12 months. Females exhibited higher shame, guilt, maladaptive cognitive emotion regulation, and depressive symptoms. Crucially, shame mediated the sex disparity by increasing depressive risk, whereas guilt was not a signific

Isolation, discrimination, and feeling "constant guilt": A mixed-methods analysis of female physicians' experience with fertility, family planning, and oncology careers.

INTRODUCTION: Family planning among female physicians is harmed by high risks of infertility, workload burden, poor family leave policies, and gender discrimination. Many women report feeling unsupported in the workplace, despite national policies to protect against unfair treatment. METHODS: This secondary analysis applied a modified version of the rigorous and accelerated data reduction technique to conduct a thematic analysis of comments to an open-ended prompt. Comments were coded by multiple trained researchers then grouped and merged into illustrative themes via qualitative techniques.

Longitudinal relationships between guilt and suicide risk among adolescents in a postdisaster context: Mediating roles of rumination and posttraumatic stress disorder.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the pathways and mechanisms underlying the impact of guilt on suicide risk using a well-controlled longitudinal study, we examined the mediating roles of intrusive rumination, deliberate rumination, and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in this association. METHOD: Four hundred and eight adolescent survivors (Mage  = 14.05 years) were assessed using self-report questionnaires three and a half years and four and a half years after the Ya'an earthquake. The self-report questionnaires included the Trauma Exposures Questionnaire, the Interpersonal Guilt Questionnaire, the

Impact of childhood traumatic events, trauma-related guilt, and avoidant coping strategies on PTSD symptoms in female survivors of domestic violence.

This investigation utilized path analyses to examine the direct and indirect effects of experiences of potentially traumatic events in childhood, trauma-related guilt, and the use of avoidant coping strategies on level of PTSD symptomatology among a sample of female survivors of domestic violence. The results of this investigation indicated that individuals with more extensive histories of potentially traumatic events in childhood were more likely to report the experience of trauma-related guilt after exposure to domestic violence victimization in adulthood. Further, the path model indicated t

Should Medicine and Public Health Abandon the Opioid Industry's Terminology Surrounding Pain? An Argument for Conceptual Reclamation and Against Guilt-By-Provenance.

Kaspari, Butler, and Fugh-Berman document how opioid manufacturers created or redefined terms such as opiophobia, breakthrough pain, pain as the fifth vital sign, and pseudoaddiction to expand opioid prescribing. Their account is accurate, but industry provenance alone does not resolve whether a term should be abandoned. Opiophobia refers to a genuine underuse of opioids in cancer and palliative care and breakthrough pain names a clinical reality that predates its industry expansion. Pseudoaddiction and pain as the fifth vital sign, by contrast, lack empirical support and function only as prom

Effectiveness of emotion-focused therapy on anger, guilt, and self-destructive behaviors in people with prolonged grief disorder: A randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Grief, following the loss of loved ones, involves emotions from deep sorrow to intense anger. Various psychological interventions exist for bereavement, with emotion-focused therapy (EFT) being a notable choice. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of EFT in addressing the psychological factors associated with prolonged grief disorder (PGD), specifically targeting anger, guilt, and self-destructive behaviors in individuals with PGD. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The current study was a clinical trial design with an experimental and control group with a 3-month follow-up. Forty

"Barefoot on the Rocks": Addressing Shame and Guilt in a Woman Suffering From Borderline Personality Disorder With Combined Individual and Group Metacognitive Interpersonal Therapy.

Guilt and shame can be very relevant when treating personality disorders. Understanding how they block the patients' capacity to figure out they can fulfill their wishes is central for a fine-grained case formulation, and for counteracting their contribution to symptom and goal fulfillment. To this purpose we will describe how Metacognitive Interpersonal Therapy, delivered in a combined individual and an open-group format, addressed pathological emotions of shame and guilt in the case of Martina, a woman suffering from Borderline PD with avoidant and dependent traits. We show how the therapist

Feelings of Guilt and Remorse After Alcohol Consumption Among People Who Drink at Increasing and Higher-Risk Levels: A Population Study in England.

INTRODUCTION: Feelings of guilt and remorse after drinking alcohol may act as barriers to seeking support. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence and frequency of such feelings among adults in England who drink at increasing and higher-risk levels, and differences by socio-demographic and drinking subgroups. METHODS: We analysed data from 40,708 adults (≥ 18 years) who drink at increasing and higher-risk levels (AUDIT-C score ≥ 5) from a monthly cross-sectional survey in England from 2014 to 2022. Feelings of guilt and remorse after drinking in the past 6 months were assessed using the A

From grief, guilt pain and stigma to hope and pride - a systematic review and meta-analysis of mixed-method research of the psychosocial impact of stillbirth.

BACKGROUND: Despite improvements in maternity healthcare services over the last few decades, more than 2.7 million babies worldwide are stillborn each year. The global health agenda is silent about stillbirth, perhaps, in part, because its wider impact has not been systematically analysed or understood before now across the world. Our study aimed to systematically review, evaluate and summarise the current evidence regarding the psychosocial impact of stillbirth to parents and their families, with the aim of improving guidance in bereavement care worldwide. METHODS: Systematic review and meta

Temporal dynamics of daily diabetes-specific burdens using intensive longitudinal data: the central role of feelings of guilt within a multilevel network analysis.

AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: The aims were to: (1) analyse the day-to-day mechanisms through which daily diabetes-specific negative emotional experiences (burdens) accumulate and potentially affect emotional well-being; and (2) identify the specific triggers of these dynamics in people with type 1 and type 2 diabetes. METHODS: Data were derived from three prospective observational studies employing ecological momentary assessment for up to 17 days. Multilevel vector autoregression models were used to estimate within-person temporal networks of nine daily diabetes-specific burdens. Out-strength and in-str

Guilt-related cognition and self-compassion could mediate the relation between coercive control and moral injury in women survivors of intimate partner violence.

OBJECTIVE: Victim-survivors of coercive control (CC), abuse characterized by one partner controlling another's tangible and psychosocial resources, may experience moral injury (MI), distress from action or inaction that violates one's values. Similarly, victim-survivors of CC can experience distressing guilt-related cognition (GRC) regarding the abuse and diminished self-compassion (SC). Given that research investigating relationships between CC and MI is limited, this study examined whether a positive relation between CC and MI could plausibly be mediated through indirect effects of high GRC

Between fate and fault: a qualitative study on the presence, absence and ambivalence of guilt in subjective theories of illness among patients with advanced cancer in palliative care.

OBJECTIVE: Patients' personal beliefs about illness shape how they experience the disease. This study explores how individuals with a terminal cancer diagnosis understand the nature and causes of their illness and whether their explanations include feelings of guilt or personal responsibility. METHODS: This study employs a qualitative methodology. It comprises 23 semi-structured interviews with patients living with cancer admitted to the palliative care unit of a tertiary hospital in Austria. The interviews were recorded digitally and transcribed verbatim. The data were analyzed using themati

Analysis of Blame, Guilt, and Shame Related to Body and Body Weight and Their Relationship with the Context of Psychological Functioning Among the Pediatric Population with Overweight and Obesity: A Systematic Review.

Background/Objectives: There is scientific evidence showing that body- and/or body weight-related blaming, guilting, and shaming continue to be both promoted and tolerated in many societal contexts, including schools and healthcare settings. A deeply ingrained belief still prevails among many individuals that inducing these negative emotions can serve as a motivator for children and adolescents to engage in obesity treatment. Therefore, the aim of this systematic review is to examine these emotions (blame, guilt, shame) in relation to body weight and their impact on psychological functioning w

Difficulties in emotion regulation among patients with substance use disorder and a history of exposure to traumatic events: the role of PTSD symptoms, emotional avoidance, shame, and guilt.

Introduction: Individuals with substance use disorder (SUD) often struggle significantly with regulating their emotions and there is a high prevalence of a history of exposure to traumatic events. Difficulties in emotion regulation and PTSD symptom severity contribute to elevated psychological burden, higher dropout rates, and increased risk of relapse. Currently, we still lack a precise understanding of the psychological mechanisms associated with difficulties in emotion regulation in SUD.Objectives: The objective of this study was to examine the magnitude and correlates of difficulties in em

"We Moved Her Too Soon": Navigating Guilt Among Adult Child and Spousal Caregivers of Persons Living with Dementia Following a Move into Residential Long-Term Care.

Guilt is a complex and multifaceted emotion navigated by many family caregivers. Guilt is sometimes experienced following a transition into a residential long-term care facility, even when the move is necessary given high care needs related to Alzheimer's disease and related dementias. This mixed methods study identifies and compares areas of guilt most frequently experienced by spouse and adult child caregivers (N=83) of a family member with dementia following transition into residential long-term care. Nearly half of caregivers reported experiencing guilt from their care recipient, other fam
