Substance Abuse and Other Adverse Outcomes for Military-Connected Youth in California: Results From a Large-Scale Normative Population Survey.

IMPORTANCE: Military families and military-connected youth exhibit significant strengths; however, a sizeable proportion of these families appear to be struggling in the face of war-related stressors. Understanding the consequences of war is critical as a public health concern and because additional resources may be needed to support military families. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether rates of adverse outcomes are higher for military-connected adolescents during war compared with nonmilitary peers. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This study is a secondary data analysis of a large, normativ

Risk for reassault in abusive female same-sex relationships.

OBJECTIVES: We revised the Danger Assessment to predict reassault in abusive female same-sex relationships. METHODS: We used focus groups and interviews to evaluate the assessment tool and identify new risk factors and telephone interviews at baseline and at 1-month follow-up to evaluate the revised assessment. RESULTS: The new assessment tool comprised 8 original and 10 new items. Predictors included increase in physical violence (relative risk ratio [RRR]=1.95; 95% confidence interval [CI]=0.84, 4.54), constant jealousy or possessiveness of abuser (RRR = 4.07; 95% CI = 0.61, 27.00), cohabi

Child and Adolescent Firearm-Related Homicide Occurring at Home.

IMPORTANCE: Firearms are the leading cause of death for children and adolescents in the United States. While mass shootings and community gun violence draw significant media attention, little research explores pediatric in-home homicide. OBJECTIVE: To analyze pediatric firearm homicides by location and sociodemographic characteristics. We hypothesized that young children are most likely to die by in-home firearm homicide. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This retrospective cohort study used data from the National Violent Death Reporting System Restricted Access Database, including 48 state

Management Principles of Civilian Ballistic Orthopaedic Trauma.

Gun-related violence is becoming increasingly more common in the United States, and ballistic injuries pose a challenge to the orthopaedic surgeon on trauma call. The guiding principles of trauma care are almost exclusively based on blunt trauma, and the management principles do not always translate. Ballistic long bone fractures, particularly of the lower extremity, can often be managed with similar principles, although the injury pattern can make restoration of anatomic alignment a challenge. Some data suggest that patients with ballistic arthrotomies can be safely treated with medical manag

Mass Shootings in Major U.S. Cities: The Limited Role of Mental Health and Substance Use Treatment Access Compared to Structural Factors.

BackgroundMass shooting events (MSEs) continue to rise in the United States, posing significant public health concerns. The link between accessibility to these treatments and MSEs remains unclear. This study investigates this relationship in major U.S. metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs), accounting for socioeconomic variables. We hypothesized that limited access to mental health and substance use treatment would be associated with increased MSE incidence.MethodsThis cross-sectional study analyzed data from 2015 to 2019 from the Gun Violence Archive (GVA) and the Opioid Environment Policy Sc

A martyr for modernity: Qiu Jin -- feminist warrior, and revolutionary.

Qui Jin, at one level, was an oriental twentieth-century Judith, the mythical Jewish widow from Bethulia who cut off the head of Holofernes, the Assyrian general besieging the city, thus saving the Israelites from destruction. Qui Jin was, as Judith was, a self-reliant heroine who when others seemed 'helpless and demoralized undertook to save them single-handedly', or in her case virtually single-handedly. This, of course, was both her making and her unmaking. In Chinese terms the story of Qui Jin, like the story of Judith if less famous, less publicised, more recent, is the story of an icon a

Prescription Opioid Misuse and Risky Adolescent Behavior.

OBJECTIVES: Misuse of opioid medications (ie, using opioids differently than how a doctor prescribed the medication) is common among US adolescents and associated with preventable health consequences (eg, severe respiratory depression, seizures, heart failure, and death).1 New guidelines and recommendations have made providers more attuned to overprescribing and more vigilant about screening for opioid misuse.2 We hypothesized that youth who misused prescription opioids were more likely to report engaging in a broad range of other risky behaviors. METHODS: We used the Centers for Disease Cont

Acoustic Exposure to Gunfire Is Associated With a Temporal Rise in Blood Pressure in Chicago.

BACKGROUND: Hypertension is prevalent among communities with exposure to gun violence. However, it remains unknown whether acoustic exposure to gunfire is associated with changes in blood pressure (BP). METHODS: We performed a retrospective cohort study of 27 765 adult patients who completed ≥2 clinic visits between 2017 and 2023 at an academic medical center on the South Side of Chicago. Our primary outcome was change in clinic-measured BP. We measured acoustic exposure to gunfire using ShotSpotter, an acoustic technology that records the time and location of gunfire. We used multivariable l

How do active duty army personnel view the relationships between firearms and suicide? The role of sociopsychological factors, firearm ownership status, and lifetime history of suicidal thoughts and behaviors.

BACKGROUND: Firearms are the primary method by which US military personnel die by suicide, and those at highest risk tend to store firearms unsafely. Promoting secure firearm storage practices is a major component of the Department of Defense's suicide prevention strategy, but perceptions about firearms being associated with suicide risk may impact such efforts. PURPOSE: This study examined perceptions that (1) firearm ownership and (2) storage practices are associated with suicide risk and whether key sociopsychological factors (e.g., entrapment, threat perceptions, honor ideology) were asso

Factors associated with post-traumatic stress disorder among SIMAD University students in Mogadishu, Somalia: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a psychiatric condition that may develop following exposure to severe or life-threatening traumatic events. Despite ongoing insecurity in Somalia, data on PTSD among university students are limited. This study assessed the occurrence of probable PTSD and its associated factors among students at SIMAD University in Mogadishu. METHODS: An institutional-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 343 students selected through stratified random sampling. PTSD symptoms were assessed using the PTSD Checklist for DSM-5 (PCL-5), applying a cut-

Psychosocial Risks and Adolescent Mental Health: The Moderating Role of Objective Neighborhood Characteristics.

PURPOSE: Although previous studies have examined the association between youth psychosocial risks and their perceptions of their neighborhood, it is unclear how objective neighborhood characteristics are associated with psychosocial risks and mental health symptoms among adolescents. We investigated how neighborhood characteristics moderate the relationship between youth psychosocial characteristics and mental health symptoms. METHODS: This cross-sectional study examined 13,837 emergency department visits by 14-18-year-olds who completed a standardized Behavioral Health Screening in a tertiar

Long-term functional, psychological, emotional, and social outcomes in pediatric victims of violence.

BACKGROUND: To evaluate the long-term functional, psychological, and emotional outcomes in individuals who survived violence-related injuries as children. METHODS: We retrospectively identified all pediatric patients (age <18y at time of injury) treated for a violent traumatic injury (gun-shot wound, stab, or assault) at our institution (1/2011-12/2020). We then prospectively attempted to contact and survey, via telephone, all patients that had reached adulthood (age ≥18y at time of study) using 7 Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS) instruments and the Primary Ca

In-person school attendance and adolescent exposure to injury-related risk behaviors during the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States.

School closures during the COVID-19 pandemic have been reported to influence adolescents' behavioral health and may have altered their exposure to injury risk. We aimed to determine how in-person school attendance of individual adolescents in the United States during the pandemic was correlated with a range of risky health behaviors. We used self-reported data from adolescents 14-18 years old enrolled in grades 9-12 who participated in the 2020 Adolescent Behaviors and Experiences Survey. The exposure of interest was in-person vs remote school attendance in the previous 30 days. Risk behavior
