Mercury concentration in human hair is used as an indicator of long-term environmental exposure to mercury. Over 90% of mercury in hair occur in the metylmercury form. Exposure to mercury almost entirely results from the consumption of seafood and meat of big sea mammals. This paper presents a review of toxic effects of mercury, biological monitoring of exposure to mercury and biological levels of mercury in hair and blood of people consuming a variety of fish diets. It also describes the methods most often used for preliminary sample preparation and applied to determining mercury hair levels.

An anaphylactic reaction to a hair dye is reported. Skin testing with the dye and its individual components demonstrated a wheal and flare response to an oxidation product of p-phenylenediamine. This product is N'N'-bis-(4-aminophenyl)-2,5-diamino-1,4-quinonediimine. Passive transfer of this sensitivity by the patient's serum to a normal control implicated an IgE-mediated reaction.

BACKGROUND: In East Asian countries, hair transplantation is a quite common procedure for treating pattern hair loss, cosmetically correcting the hairline, and correcting eyebrow and pubic hair defects. OBJECTIVE: To determine the protective effects of basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) on cochlear neurons and hair cells in vitro and in vivo.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: In Experiment I, cultured spiral ganglion neurons (SGNs) prepared from postnatal Day 3 mice were exposed to 20 mM glutamate for 2 h before the culture medium was replaced with fresh medium containing 0, 25, 50 or 100 ng/ml bFGF. Fourteen days later, all cultures were fixed with 4% paraformaldehyde and stained with 1% toluidine blue. The number of surviving SGNs was counted and the length of the neurites of the SGNs was measured.

Unwanted facial hair is a common problem and requires different grooming regimens or treatments. Shaving beard hair can cause undesirable skin effects, such as irritation, razor burn, razor nick, and pseudofolliculitis barbae. This study explores male behaviors related to shaving facial hair and the consequential effects on the shaved skin. A questionnaire-based, cross-sectional, analytical study was conducted on 340 healthy men. Most of the participants were manual shavers. Approximately one-third of the manual shavers prepared their skin for shaving, compared to 13% of the electric shavers.
